LACO at UCLA

May 28th, 2007

On Sunday, May 20th, Royce Hall hosted the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO).  They performed a series called “Four Seasons”. This is not to be confused with Vivaldi’s concerto “The Four Seasons”, although one movement of that piece was included in Sunday evening’s concert. The pieces included a world premier of a piece by Wolfgang called “Desert Wind”, Vivaldi’s “Summer” from his aforementioned concerto, Piazzolla’s “Cuatro Estaciones Portenas” (or “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires”), and Haydn’s “Symphony No. 98 in B-Flat Major”.

Founded in 1968, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra promotes the idea that classical music is a joy to be shared by everyone. Ironically enough, the majority of the audience members were senior citizens with only a few young people in the balcony region. The concert was lively.  It was conducted by Jeffrey Kahane with 21-year old Lindsay Deutsch as guest violinist. The LA Chamber Orchestra is a phenomenal group, not to be missed if you ever have the opportunity to enjoy their incredible musicianship.

One Response to “LACO at UCLA”

  1. Addie Says:

On behalf of the orchestra, thanks for the review! I am a member of the LACO staff, and can attest that we are acutely aware that orchestra audiences in general tend to be mostly older folks. This has been a problem on the national scale for a number of years, and it seems like it has been pretty recent that orchestras are being more inclusive in their marketing. We have a program called LACO Pulse that is for the 21-35 age group, and we offer them special discounts and networking events along with the concerts. It’s extremely important to have the involvement of younger adults because they (we) bring such vitality to the future evolution of the art form. More info. on our website http://www.laco.org/pulse and on our MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/lachamberorchestra.
