I’ve never been to Canada but it seems cold. Cold and different. Regardless, Canada never ceases to shame us south-of-the-border folks with their awesome music and incredible knack for not being a bunch of totally fucking morons. And although we keep laughing at their adorable accents, they’re just too damn polite to stop sharing their gifts with us. The latest import I’ve been salivating over has been Mother Mother’s “O My Heart”. This album rips. It’s so refreshing to hear a band that is irrefutably unique without trying to drag you beyond what you would normally consider pleasurable listening. Don’t get me wrong, I love it when a band shows up to the music party and says they want to show me something in their car and then I wake up the next morning by the side of the road 80 miles from home with little recollection of the previous night but an very satisfying inability to explain what they showed me, it’s just that it’s nice to get freaky with the lights on once and a while. Mother Mother is standing in the middle of a very crowded room, but still they stand alone and do it spectacularly. That makes no sense but if you listen to this album you will totally get it. To get a taste, check out the inexplicably gothed-out video for the title track from “O My Heart”. Perhaps more inexplicable is that a youtube commenter (the adorabley monikered Pokemonika) was able to say exactly what I wanted to say before I could even think it…“I feel like I need to get out condoms when i listen to their albums.”
[Mother Mother is playing at Silverlake Lounge November 3rd]
