Stephen Ellison aka Flying Lotus is about to blow. Following years as a successful, experimental producer and recording artist in the greater Los Angeles area, ‘FlyLo’ as he is known affectionately by fans, is about to go global. Known for his off-kilter tempos, organic cloudy atmosphere, and vibrant melodies, Flying Lotus has carved out quite a niche for himself and his unique perspective. Him and his compadres in the Low End Theory have been putting a stamp on the Los Angeles beat-scene previously occupied by only L.A. mainstays such as Madlib and Daedelus. Still never heard of him? Then it might help to know that you have probably already heard his music if you are familiar with Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, where his dreamy beats made their first appearance. Since then, he has been representing Los Angeles with much adoration while touring and working on various projects. He has found himself on quite a hot streak lately with his immensely popular cult video for the song “Parisian Goldfish” off of his most recent album, Los Angeles, although it is more commonly known as “Dance Floor Dale.” The streak continues as he has just recently released an essential mix on Pete Tong’s legendary BBC 1 show, mixing everyone from himself, to Nelly Furtado, Portishead, Bjork, and Radiohead into one incredibly smooth hour and fifty-nine minutes. Pete Tong even went so far as to say that Flying Lotus is Southern California’s answer to Aphex Twin. All I can say is that is a BIG statement and only time will tell, but Ellison definitely has the potential to become one of the great musical prides of Los Angeles. For now Flying Lotus is touring the globe, catch him if you can. I couldn’t leave you hanging, http://www.dancefloordale.com/, oh yeah, you might wanna check out the official website too (he has his own version of asteroids to play). http://www.flying-lotus.com/destroy/
