Music That Makes You Dumb

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

This might be the funniest research proposal I’ve heard in a long time. A former computer hacker by the name of Virgil Griffith recently compiled a list of college student’s SAT scores vs. their musical tastes. The data uncoverd a phenomenon: stupid people listen to ‘Lil Wayne, smart people listen to Sufjan Stevens.

Bat For Lashes – Two Suns Review

Friday, March 6th, 2009

album cover

Artist: Bat For Lashes
Album: Two Suns (2009)
Genre: indie, dream pop
Sounds like: elements of Sufjan Stevens and   Chad VanGaalen, but with female vocals

(strongly recommended***)

1. Glass
2. Sleep Alone***
3. Moon And Moon
4. Daniel***
5. Peace Of Mind
6. Siren Song
7. Pearl’s Dream***
8. Good Love
9. Two Planets
10. Travelling Woman
11. The Big Sleep

Natasha Khan’s haunting vocals layered upon beats by Yeasayer—not to mention the skills of producer David Kosten—form a delicate balance between acoustic and electronic sounds that borders on ethereal.  It’s also proof that when used appropriately, organs and drum machines can peacefully coexist. I recommend listening with surround-sound because it’s an entire sensory experience.  Two Suns keeps it surreal without being harshly trippy and is great for those “chillout” moods.

Grade: B

We Barbarians and Ima Robot at Kerkhoff

Friday, March 6th, 2009

So last Thursday, We Barbarians and Ima Robot graced the UCLA campus with their presence to play a free show for us. If you slept on this, you should kick yourself..but not too hard. The show was great, We Barbarians killed it live, even with the bad audio and lighting. This was my second time seeing them perform and they didn’t fail to impress. The three of them put out a really spacious sound that captivates you to every extent possible. I would highly recommend getting their E.P. and seeing them play at Silver Lake. Or, you could listen to Log Jammin’ on Fridays 10-12(plug!) as we will be playing a good amount of the EP. If you are unfamiliar with the band, they sound like Cold War Kids because they are also from Long Beach and they happen to be really close friends with them (if you didn’t notice, the bass player from CWK was there). But We Barbarians is more obscure, spacy, and intimate than Cold War Kids because of their in your face performance and Dave’s smooth vocals. The one complain about their performance was the lighting, they should have just turned off the lights and brought in some colored lamps! WE Barbarians got to play a full set which was neat because it was damn good and worth watching. Ima Robot took the stage without a synth player therefore limiting the amount of old material that could be played. They opened their set with a couple hippied out tracks featuring some awesome dancing and some syncopated drum beats. They finally played some older material such as Let’s talk Turkey and Scream but the audience was asking and waiting for Dirty Lifer and Dynomite (which never came). It was disappointing because they could not play a full set and with the lack of a synth player the performance was a little disappointing. Regardless, it was a kick ass show and you shouldn’t a missed it.

nodoubt

For all of you who long for the ska days and miss the catchy alternative punk beats of No Doubt, search no further. The Orange County natives have finally reemerged from a five year hiatus by kicking off a tour this summer!

Singer Gwen Stefani said, “The whole reason for going on this tour was to have fun, try on all our favorite songs again and to get inspired to make new music. It feels good to be all together again.”

The areas closest to lovely Los Angeles include  Fresno’s Save Mart Center  (5/19/2009), Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena (5/20/2009), San Diego’s Cricket Wireless Amphitheater (5/22/2009), and Irvine’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheater  (7/31/2009, 8/01/2009). Tickets go on sale to the general public this Saturday, March 7th. The Grammy-winning band has also selected Paramore as the special guest for the tour.

For more tour information and an exclusive new video of Gwen, Tony, Tom, and Adrian hanging out in the studio talking about the tour, visit http://www.nodoubt.com/news/.

Brock Bowls

Last week (Feb 24), Modest Mouse apparantly jammed pretty hard in Hollywood. I have seen them live a handful of times, and when I heard about their Palladium appearence about a month before the show, I truly did not want to fork over the cash to see them again. Apparently I made a mistake!

SETLIST (via stereogum.com)
01 “The View”
02 “Ohio”
03 “Dashboard”
04 “Trailer Trash”
05 “Bukowski”
06 “Education”
07 “Satellite Skin”
08 “Paper Thin Walls”
09 “Dancehall”
10 “3rd Planet”

I must say that for somebody who never even finished high school, Brock is pretty good with alliteration. Enjoy “Satellite Skin,” by Modest Mouse.

Facebook Carpool

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Flights are expensive, gas is getting up there again, and nobody wants to sit on a bus for 14 hours longer then a trip should take!

That’s why this Friday (3/6) on The High Life with Fast Eddie (2-4) I will be interviewing a representative from Zimride.com, the company that created the UCLA carpool application on Facebook, which has been growing on college campuses for the last several years.

http://apps.facebook.com/carpool/index.php?ref=ucla

Follow the link and you can instantly post rides or find rides amongst the UCLA student body. It saves the environment and money.

The story of how this all got started is pretty amazing so tune in and enjoy. Side note, we’re usually not environmentalist here on The High Life but this is something that we can get behind!

Date:
Wed Mar 11 2009
Time:
9:00 pm
Cost: $25 presale

Description:

Liquified presents John Digweed…

John Digweed will return to the legendary Mayan Theater for the first time in three years, headlining a one off extended set show March 11, 2009. Digweed’s Mayan return coincides with the ten-year anniversary celebrations of his world renowned Bedrock label, and the release of the very hot ‘Aquatonic’ from John Digweed and Nick Muir on Bedrock.

Returning to The Mayan Theater is somewhat a spiritual homecoming for John Digweed, as it was at the Mayan that he first made a name for himself in Los Angeles, with Liquified debuting him at the venue in 2000. The hot, sweaty, sexy confines of one of Los Angeles’ most iconic venues gave Digweed the stage he deserved for the first time in Los Angeles, his previous shows had been held at The Viper Room.

LA based Liquified resident Kazell will open the night, after touring with John Digweed and Sasha on their 2008 Spring Club Tour.

Age: 21+
Hours: 9pm – 4am
