I Came Home | A 10-Week Love Letter to Hip Hop

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

My intense relationships with musics were established during my elementary school years. Just like Nasty Nas flows in “Hip Hop is Dead,” “hip hop is”, for all intents and purposes, “my first wifey[/hubbie].” I remember listening to TLC’s “Waterfalls” while on a school bus and finding a base from which to root my socialized existence and experiences. Being a nerd not only drove me to escape via music but also to the search for music knowledge, by all means necessary. Eventually my commitment to organized sounds extended beyond hip hop to include mainly, but not exclusively, those discursively labeled as popular musics stemming from Black, Afro/Latino, and Latino diasporas. My journey has included a four-year stint at UCLAradio.com which is coming to an end as I wrap-up the graduate school grind–a foray into audio/visual representations of Afrofuturism in funk and hip hop.

I decided to come home to hip hop and celebrate its 30-year recorded history during my last ten weeks as a UCLAradio.com DJ.  Listen to my love letter every Monday from 4p-6p(pst) streaming live on UCLAradio.com.

Playlist and show info after the jump.

Internships, Course Credit, Transition from UCLA to Life

Monday, September 28th, 2009

madskillzWant to work in the music or entertainment (or any) industry?  Get an internship.  Like, now.

I know it’s tempting to take classes and not think about anything beyond UCLA, but hey, if you’re a junior or senior (or super senior)  you might want to get some work experience.  Seriously.

As a UCLA student you have a HUGE advantage over someone who is just coming in off the street, even if you’ve never done one before.  They’ll know you’re smart, legitimate, and hey, maybe they even went to UCLA.

How do you find an internship?  There’s a link on MyUCLA, or hit up the Career Center’s Site or even find a cool company you want to work for at contact them.

Once you get an internship, they’ll probably want you to get course credit.  You’ll need to take something like a 195.  No worries - call or email the Center for Community Learning (CCL) and make an appointment to meet with one of the coordinators.  If you don’t care about getting a grade, do History 195 or English 195.  If you want a grade, there’s Sociology 195 and Political Science 195.

Oh, your industry doesn’t have to match field of the course.  For example, if you do an internship at Sony Music you can get academic credit by doing History 195.

So what are you waiting for?  Find an internship this week, call the CCL, meet with a coordinator, get school credit, and start getting real world experience.

Why am I all about internships?  Because when I was an undergrad got one and landed a job in the entertainment industry.  And, full disclosure, if you sign up for a 195, you might find me as your coordinator.

Seriously.

Welcome (Back) Bruins

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

It’s the first day of school, and for some of you reading it’s your first day of college, and for other’s it’s just another year towards that unreachable graduation date.  If you’re like me, you’ve either spent the day hunting down people who you could possibly mooch textbooks/notes/exams/homework off of for your classes, or you still can’t get over how badass the dining hall food is and how overwhelming the campus can be.  Well, whether you’re wide eyed or weary eyed, UCLAradio has just the thing to soothe your soul after Day 1.

All you second, third, forth, fifth, infinitieth years consider this a welcome back present from us here at your favorite college radio station.  As for you first years out there: this is our official WELCOME to you, and if you ever see any of us with our UCLAradio T-shirts on, don’t be shy to say hi, or high five, or anything creepy, just don’t ask for directions or you may end up lost somewhere in between the 1st floor of Boelter and Life Sciences…where they keep the really top secret shit they don’t show you at orientation (kidding…i hope…?).

Anyways, enjoy one of my favorite jazz records, and an undisputable classic: Herbie Hancock’s Crossings. Link after the jump.
