Want to work in the music or entertainment (or any) industry? Get an internship. Like, now.
I know it’s tempting to take classes and not think about anything beyond UCLA, but hey, if you’re a junior or senior (or super senior) you might want to get some work experience. Seriously.
As a UCLA student you have a HUGE advantage over someone who is just coming in off the street, even if you’ve never done one before. They’ll know you’re smart, legitimate, and hey, maybe they even went to UCLA.
How do you find an internship? There’s a link on MyUCLA, or hit up the Career Center’s Site or even find a cool company you want to work for at contact them.
Once you get an internship, they’ll probably want you to get course credit. You’ll need to take something like a 195. No worries - call or email the Center for Community Learning (CCL) and make an appointment to meet with one of the coordinators. If you don’t care about getting a grade, do History 195 or English 195. If you want a grade, there’s Sociology 195 and Political Science 195.
Oh, your industry doesn’t have to match field of the course. For example, if you do an internship at Sony Music you can get academic credit by doing History 195.
So what are you waiting for? Find an internship this week, call the CCL, meet with a coordinator, get school credit, and start getting real world experience.
Why am I all about internships? Because when I was an undergrad got one and landed a job in the entertainment industry. And, full disclosure, if you sign up for a 195, you might find me as your coordinator.
Seriously.
