My intense relationships with musics were established during my elementary school years. Just like Nasty Nas flows in “Hip Hop is Dead,” “hip hop is”, for all intents and purposes, “my first wifey[/hubbie].” I remember listening to TLC’s “Waterfalls” while on a school bus and finding a base from which to root my socialized existence and experiences. Being a nerd not only drove me to escape via music but also to the search for music knowledge, by all means necessary. Eventually my commitment to organized sounds extended beyond hip hop to include mainly, but not exclusively, those discursively labeled as popular musics stemming from Black, Afro/Latino, and Latino diasporas. My journey has included a four-year stint at UCLAradio.com which is coming to an end as I wrap-up the graduate school grind–a foray into audio/visual representations of Afrofuturism in funk and hip hop.

I decided to come home to hip hop and celebrate its 30-year recorded history during my last ten weeks as a UCLAradio.com DJ.  Listen to my love letter every Monday from 4p-6p(pst) streaming live on UCLAradio.com.
