For the longest time I had been on the search for a good roller rink to throw the ultimate Roller Disco Party. Until about a month and a half ago my queries had been fruitless, finding myself in family fun roller rinks with music from crappy radio stations playing, kids falling over themselves, and adults sitting on the sidelines eating hot dogs, half paying attention to the cries of their uncoordinated children. I began to unwillingly accept that the golden age of roller rinks were a thing of the past, and that I was silly to believe that anyone would be nostalgic enough to keep the 1970s roller disco love alive. But then! I happened to come across a small rectangular flyer with a groovy looking roller disco couple on the front, advertising a Roller Disco Party thrown at W.O.W. (World On Wheels) roller rink in Los Angeles, every 4th Saturday of the month. “A Roller Disco Electro Funk New Wave Party!” Too good to be true I assumed so, and because of doubts and prior obligations I did not attend the first Roller Disco Party I found out about. For shame, I know. After a few days of swimming in regret I vowed that I would attend the next Roller Disco Party, which happened to be a Roller Disco Halloween Party. And so, on October 24, 2009 I attended the SPACE Roller Disco Halloween Party. Not surprisingly, it was amazing. Upon entering W.O.W. I thought the place looked super sketchy, and literally thought I was entering into the ghetto version of a high school gym from a John Hughes film. But once I got in, all worries were put to rest.

Everyone was dressed up in Halloween costumes, and some other people, myself included, dressed up in honor of the roller disco theme decked out in dorky roller disco gear. The best costume by far was the roller skating robot. The man in the suit was an amazing roller skater, even while he was wrapped up in his silver, boxy gear. The wooden roller rink was decorated with disco balls and strobe lights, and the dj was spinning some funky jams. Besides the fact that I nearly ate it a couple of times (not setting foot on roller skates since age 9 didn’t help), I had an awesome time, and will probably become a regular at these Roller Disco Parties. That is, if W.O.W. doesn’t discontinue the party. (Letters have been sent to the rink begging them to let the Roller Disco Party continue, fingers crossed guys). But definitely think about checking this place out, and roller skate/dance to the tightest jams known to man!
