No, Sporcle is not a new dirty word. It is, however, my new guilty pleasure. Ever since my roommate introduced this site to me last week I’ve been irreversibly hooked, getting my fix in between classes and study sessions. So be warned: Sporcle.com is a highly addictive substance. Created in 2007, Sporcle is a quiz game site for everyone from the movie buff to the history addict to the music aficionado. Sporting over 2100+ quizzes—a large portion of which are user made—this site promotes “mentally stimulating diversions” in 15 different categories. These quizzes can be of any length and type, ranging from “hint” quizzes that give you a bit of information to go on (i.e., the “Begins and Ends with ‘B’ quiz gives you small blurbs to work on like, “a baby’s mealtime neckwear”), “list” quizzes (like the “NFL Teams” quiz) or more personalized “opinion” quizzes (such as the “100 Worst Songs Ever Written” quiz). Doesn’t sound all that exciting to you? Just wait until you’ve only got forty-five seconds left and 10 band names to go in the “4 Letter Band Names” quiz. Or even worse, when you’ve got three minutes left and only five countries on your list for the “Alphabetically Last Countries A-Z” quiz. It’s a procrastination tool, yes, but unlike brain-numbing Facebook, after ten minutes on Sporcle you don’t have feel too bad about your work ethic. Sporcle can really work your memory and, (according to how ambitious your quiz choices) can teach you things you never knew about literature, geography, music, entertainment, or language. And if you’d rather torture than be tortured, you can be a member and make your own quiz! Take it from the procrastination queen of the world—if you have to stray from that O-Chem workbook (and you know it’s gonna happen sooner or later), Sporcle.com is the way to go. With over 115 million plays, Sporcle quizzes show that once they get a hold of you they won’t let go.
