Minimal Mondays | Monthly at BARCOPA in Santa Monica

=================================================================

Ralf Kollmann is yet to put his name on any mobilee productions—most likely because he spends his days running mobilee records—but the glowing reception he has received as a DJ suggests he might just be the label’s secret weapon. Having founded mobilee in 2005 alongside Anja Schneider, Kollmann has been knee-deep in the development of the techno scene since the 90s and has since become one of the central nerves in the spine of electronic music that is Berlin. With a committment to consistently pushing the label in dynamic directions, Ralf has been instrumental in transforming mobilee from a small, homegrown imprint into a full-on music and entertainment enterprise. The true double threat, Kollmann is equally adept at packing dancefloors worldwide, where one can expect nothing less than tight track selection and even tighter mixing.

A veteran of the electronic music scene with a record collection unparalleled in its depth and magnitude, Kollmann fills his sets with everything from stone-cold classics to the newest of the new—often including exclusive material—one the benefits of his position at the top of the techno food chain. While his podcasts and DJ mixes featuring the latest unreleased mobilee and Leena tracks spread around the world at light speed, Kollmann himself has been busy with appearances at T-Bar, Harry Klein, Watergate, Panorama Bar, Weekend, and the Goya Festival. As Kollmann’s vivacious sets continue to inhabit the world’s most renowned clubs, one thing becomes crystal clear: be it running a label or making people dance, Ralf Kollmann hits all the right spots.

Incognito presents MARSHALL JEFFERSON @ King King

Thursday, December 17th, 2009
December 18, 2009 9:00 pmtoDecember 19, 2009 4:00 am

MarshallJefferson_12-18-09On Friday Dec 18, INCOGNITO Global throws its last King King party for
2009 by flying in one of the TRUE GODFATHERS of HOUSE MUSIC, MARSHALL
JEFFERSON for an insanely rare LA appearance.

INCOGNITO has been known for bringing a myriad of Leading DJs from all
over the world, usually in their 1st LA appearance, different from the
usual LA bookings. From Chymera, to Juan Diaz to Eric Kupper to James
Holden, INCOGNITO has pushed the envelope musically, and that has made
its past 2 1/2 years of Friday nights, always very well attended. But
for its last party for 2009, before INCOGNITO goes on a tour of Asia
and Europe over the holidays, it again defies the norm and goes back
to the past and brings you a real GODFATHER of HOUSE, and not just
because he was there at the beginning.

MARSHALL JEFFERSON is not only one of the earliest producers of House
music, but he raised the bar and is the standard for almost everything
that we hear in House today. To start of, he was the 1st DJ to use the
piano on a house track, it was titled, “House Music Anthem (Move Your
Body). More than 20 years later and countless tracks after, its
considered by many as still the greatest House song ever produced.
Even today, almost, if not all of the DJs, has that song ready to play
and make dancefloor sweat at a moment’s notice.

But it doesn’t end there. MARSHALL JEFFERSON also produced the 1st
ACID HOUSE song & album and was intrumental in the launch of the
career of DJ Pierre. Oh and he was also the first DJ to use SOUL HOUSE
VOCALS in a track, launching the careers of Ten City, Kim Mazelle and
Cece Rogers.  Oh and for the techno world, he was the 1st DJ to use
the TB303, the most sought after instrument for techno producers
before ableton. In fact, by 1987, MARSHALL JEFFERSON was the 1st
Chicago DJ to tour Europe, including UK.

But even if you forget all of that, remember this. The list of careers
that Marshall has helped or launched reads like a who’s who of dance
music; Roy Davis Jnr, Felix Da Housecat, Lil Louise, Frankie Knuckles,
Steve “Silk” Hurley, and many others, not including the thousands of
producers and DJs that have been influenced and inspired by him.

Simply put, if you consider yourself a real lover of House and Dance
music, then its time to turn INCOGNITO and give respect to the DJ who
was so cutting edge in his time, he pretty much laid the path for
everybody else to follow. Trust when we say, this one is going to be
LEGENDARY.

Concert Review – Passion Pit at the Fox Theater – 12 December 2009

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

passion pit
Okay, so I’ll guess I’ll start this review by saying that I’ve been listening to Passion Pit’s debut album Manners since it came out.  Released in May of this year, Manners captured my attention with its captivating lyrics, poppy beats, and high-pitched vocals (from lead singer Michael Angelakos).  Skip to a few months later, and I’m starting to see Passion Pit everywhere.  No, really.  They performed on Jimmy Kimmel last week and if you’ve been watching any television you’ve heard their song Sleepyhead in the new Palm Pixi commercials.  That being said, I was ecstatic Saturday night when the time came to trek out to the Fox Theater in Pomona to see the band live.

After the hour or so wait in the rain, we all filtered into the theater and waited for the opening acts.  As for the venue, the Fox Theater in Pomona is pretty much like the Wiltern on Wilshire, but just a bit bigger.  The bands were interesting to say the least – Plague Vendor was first and Band of Skulls was after them.

Plague Vendor – I’d never heard of these guys before the show.  They’re set was decent.  Their sound is like screamo, but less of the ‘o’.  Think, Blood Brothers but more calm.  While I wasn’t a fan of their music right off the bat, the lead singer was amazingly entertaining.  This guy was all over the place.  My friend, who came to the show with me, mentioned him “thinking he was James Brown” and made a few comments about recreational drug use.  Not to use those as insults – because this guy was on fire.  He was dancing, shaking, doing the splits, and even took off his shirt and showed us his bod.  Really, really, entertaining.  Interested?  Check out their music on the myspace.

Next up was Band of Skulls.  I must say, this band blew me away.  A three man band – or should I say two men and a woman – with drums, bass, and guitar had my attention from the first note.  Their sound is very blues-rock with alternative rock thrown into the mix.  Think, The Kills but more stripped down and guitar-fueled.  The male and female vocals mix wonderfully together and the solos are amazing.  They had this way of building up a song, taking it down more than a few notches, and then they would work on the buildup again before stopping completely.  Amazing.  I didn’t expect what they delivered.  Check out their music on their myspace.

Last, but not least, was Passion Pit.  Before coming on, the playlist over the sound system provided us with cheesy 80’s pop/r&b tunes, like “Candy Girl” by New Edition.  Surprisingly, these are popular songs among the Passion Pit crowd.  But that was just for warm up, because eventually, the lights went out and Passion Pit was on.
