Culprit presents EWAN PEARSON and DROOG

Friday, December 11th, 2009
December 11, 2009 12:00 amtoDecember 12, 2009 4:00 am

As the year to remember draws to a close, the Droog/Culprit clan invite you to a celebratory party. A year that took us from The Room & TS 1 to the top of the Standard Hotel, via Canteen and now to TS 2. It brimmed with great music with some truly exciting performances throughout. One of those came from Ewan Pearson.

There are few artists and DJs in our scene with a more complete reputation than Ewan. An extraordinary producer, an excellent DJ who has covered as much musical ground as he has literal territory. Touring globally (recent trips included Singapore and Lebanon), remixing major artists (Depeche Mode, Freeform 5, Leftfield, Nelly Furtado, Goldfrapp, Erlend Oye, Ladytron etc.) producing a wide range of music on the some of most respected labels, including compilations for Fabric, Soma and Kompakt.

Sharing the bill are Droog, for whom 2009 has been the best yet. Gigs and parties at WMC, DEMF, Chicago, Tampa, San Francisco, and Miami, that culminated in a tour of European capitals, as well as launching of Culprit, were the highlights. The musical maturation continues into 2010.

On Friday, we also rejoice in the birthday of our own, Justin Sloe, adding more guilt to those who miss the party!

INCOGNITO presents Ida Engberg

Friday, December 11th, 2009
December 12, 2009 10:00 pmtoDecember 13, 2009 7:00 am

On Saturday Dec 12, INCOGNITO SPECIAL EVENTS proudly presents the 1st
LA Appearance of the DJ who has been sweeping the world, Sweden’s IDA
ENGBERG (Pickadoll, Ovum, Get Physical).

She is considered Ovum’s, Get Physical’s & Pickadoll’s Secret Weapon.
But at WMC-Miami 2009’s Sunday School for Degenerates, the secret came
out and a Sensation was born. Amongst a Line-up of Superstar DJ’s, she
played one of the Consensus Best DJ sets in all of Miami! Since that
fateful and sensational night where DJs like Lee Burridge, etc gave
her a standing ovation, she has toured all over the world, leaving a
trail of mouths agape, feet tired, ears ringing and minds blown away.

And it doesn’t end there, as we have 14 LA heavyweights in 2 rooms
supporting that night with DJs ranging from Compression, Terraroma,
Pioneer, Core, Afro 99, Colombia Sound Militia, Stompin Grounds, Made
in Brazil, Latintronik and more.

If you missed WMC in 2009, then you have to come out and see what the
hype is all about. If you were there at Miami, then we don’t need to
convince you even. All you need to know is IDA ENGBERG is coming for
her 1st LA Appearance and shes turning INCOGNITO. And you know you
just have to be there as this one’s going to be momentous.

HEAR 008 – 1 year annniversary party with Mark Henning

Friday, December 11th, 2009
December 12, 2009 10:00 pmtoDecember 13, 2009 7:00 am

HEAR008 BackThis December 12 marks the one year anniversary to Harmonic’s HEAR series with an underground episode not to be missed in this holiday season. Two of the world’s finest producers come together to bring you one epic night of djing and celebrating one year in the making. Both Mark Henning and Jeremy P Caulfield have been caught making ripples in the Berlin techno scene, though neither are originally from Germany they hold residencies at HOME and Watergate, respectively. Mark is a transplant from England, while Jeremy comes from Toronto, Canada. These gentlemen are renowned as top notch djs. They will make the trans-Atlantic flight to bring an epic night of smooth beats that effortlessly bridge genres to develop a uniquely European sound to the LA underground scene.Drumcell, of LA powerhouse DROID, brings the home-town, world recognized talent. This marks Mo’s 3rd appearance for Harmonic, which began on HEAR’s inaugural night, way back in Hollywood. Drumcell always brings the finest of techno, blended to a unique, mesmerizing perfection.

The support for this anniversary comes from Listed’s Hac Le of Auralism records. You may recognize Hac from LA 10 years ago, Chicago or most recently San Francisco, where he has been spotted relentlessly pushing the electronic music scene. We are proud to bring him down for a SoCal reunion, amidst a barrage of amazing djs. Residents Delinquent Frequency (Jake Patrick and Matthew Derham) will start the night off laying a sturdy foundation to an all-night frenzy. The MusicSavages will be bartending up a storm…like usual.

We have added a second room with an eclectic mix of music which adds a nice balance to the dirtiness of the main room.

2nd Room hosted by Music Savages

Cameron Angeli (Music Savages – LA)
Performing a Special Eclectic Downtempo Set

Justin Sloe (Culprit – LA)

Kent Christian (Music Savages – LA)

Refuge ( LA)

Send names to RSVPhear@beharmonic.com for discounted entry: $10/before midnight (w/rsvp) $20/after. For event location call 888.666.1726 after 8pm the night of the show. Please be respectful of the neighborhood and spread the word to trusted friends. Please do not repost the venue. Harmonic would like to thank you for your last year of support. Without you, none of this would be possible.

Random Facebook Friend Requests

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

As a DJ promoting his radio show via his Facebook profile, I tend to add a lot of people.  Consequently, a lot of people add me.  And I also get a number of random friend requests.

not sure

The question is, how can I tell which friend requests are from unsigned musicians / fans of unsigned music, which are simple self promotion, and which are evil, evil, data-stealing, computer infiltrating spam bugs?

Take the girl pictured on the right – a recent “friend request.”  She looks friendly enough, but  there’s no indication from her bikini nor her cock-eyed glance that she’s into college radio.

Sure, you might HOPE that she heard of your show, and that maybe all that marketing you’ve been doing through Twitter has finally paid off.

But those are just hopes.

No one poses in a bikini and then goes around friending college radio DJs.  I repeat, no one.

So if you get a friend request like this one, there’s only one thing to do – save the picture.

I mean, ignore.  Ignore!

Seriously.

-DJ Octoon

PS. Regardless of what is written above, I’m still accepting friend requests.  Seriously.

Mau5traped!

Friday, December 4th, 2009

He’s not a Halloween costume, he’s not Mickey’s evil twin, and no, he does not have a head deformation. He’s Deadmau5. And his new album is for lack of a better name, For Lack of a Better Name. Released in September of this year, his new album is definitely going to keep him up at the top of both American and European dance track charts. Most people would classify his music as more electronic or house. I could care less (even though as a house aficionado I should) because no matter what genre, anytime I play a song off his new album I’m floating in oblivion.  Example: the 16th hour proved to be a much deeper and darker song that I had heard from him. Although not every song on the album is new, songs from older albums such as Ghosts n’ Stuff are remixed or are in different versions. My all time favorite- the new “Ghosts N’ Stuff” featuring the Australian producer Rob Swire- gives the original song which was just beats and instrumentals a more ‘dance-y’…almost R&B-ish feel THUS expanding its playability! Overall – amazing album, totally worth listening to while doing homework or pregaming.

Tiger’s Turkey Foul

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

As discussed on the sports segment during Tuesday night’s News Show on UCLA Radio, Tiger Woods did not have the best Thanksgiving last week, causing quite a stir in the sports world after crashing his Cadillac into a fire-hydrant and then a tree at two in the morning.

Woods’ mastery of privacy and public appearance has been as impressive as his legendary long-game. But this issue raises a few burning questions. What I want to know is this:

Why in the world are you driving a Cadillac!? This is a man who, according to Forbes, makes over $100 million per year and is on his way to the Billionaire Club.  So why is he parading around Orlando in an American SUV?

C’mon Eldrick. A Bentley or Rolls is more befitting for such a regal figure. Queen Elizabeth is chauffeured around England in a customized Bentley limo and you’re driving yourself around in an Escalade? That’s the real mystery here.

Perhaps Tiger felt guilty about driving a Cadillac after a long relationship with GM. What else could explain violently crashing a giant SUV into not one, but two items right next to your house?

Internal combustion choice aside, there are other legitimate questions to be asked. Namely, why Woods doesn’t see that his silence is such a bad play here? Yes, he’s been private, but he’s also the guy who hugged his dad in a tearful embrace after his first Masters, then showed so much emotion after Earl’s death, and literally gritted it out last year in the US Open with a torn ACL. To pretend that his accident was not in the bizarro world-realm of strange is a slight to us all. Even Michael Scott explained how he injured his foot on his George Foreman.

That’s what is so wrong about his decision to play the privacy card. We’ve all driven. We’ve all driven late. We’ve all driven out of our driveway. What in the world could have caused someone to leave home in the middle of the night on Thanksgiving, tear down the street, crash into two obstructions and pass out on a neighbor’s lawn with a busted rear-window? (His wife supposedly freed him from the car by smashing the window with a golf club, but this has not been verified.)

Woods is correct in that it is a private matter. It is certainly understandable for him to ask people to stop speculating. But if this was only a car accident, then why not simply say in his release statement, “Here’s what happened…I fell asleep,” or “I was mad I didn’t win any majors this year,” or “GM wanted me to destroy a Cadillac,” or “I’m Tiger Woods…I should have a driver!”?

All of the above would be acceptable explanations. Talk shows would make jokes, and this story would fade away as a one-liner.

Instead, due to his silence, it has opened a vicious can of speculation-worms. Who can blame sports fans? History has shown that sometimes, the cleaner the facade, the darker the secrets.

Talk, Tiger, talk. Oh, and buy some nicer wheels.

Editor’s Note:Tiger Woods released a statement this morning about the incident:

“I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.”

UCLA v. USC Debacle

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

The highly anticipated UCLA v. USC showdown resulted in an almost less than exciting interception and is-that-really-Kevin-Craft-out-there? filled game.

Allow me a few seconds to sum up what happened: UCLA’s defense carried the team. Quarterback Kevin Prince threw two interceptions that more than likely cost the game. Back-up quarterback Kevin Craft subbed in because Prince was reportedly having troubles with his shoulder. A few fumbles, turnovers and penalties later–a couple touchdowns for USC, one for UCLA.
