Concert Review: Manchester Orchestra, The Features, Biffy Clyro, O’Brother at the Troubadour, 10 March 2010

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Manchester-OrchestraManchester Orchestra and friends provided Los Angelian fans with some good tunes at the Troubadour.  In support of their latest album, “Mean Everything to Nothing,” the Georgian band decided to give Los Angeles two dates instead of one.  On March 9th and 10th, fans crowded into the Troubadour for the sold-out shows for a few hours of good music.  The headliners brought along three opening bands – O’Brother, Biffy Clyro, and The Features – that ranged along the rock-music spectrum.  Despite technical difficulties that plagued all of the bands for the night, it was a good show.  Read more of the review and see some photos after the jump.

Album Review: Ali & Toumani

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Here at UCLA Radio, the first word that springs to any DJ’s mind upon hearing the quintessential inquiry, “What type of music do you like?” is of course, eclectic. A sampling of the canon from each genre, perhaps. And when it comes to checking the box off “world music,” MIA and El Guincho must work, right? And the tinges of Africa in Vampire Weekend gotta count for something. Admittedly, I won’t pretend I’m much more “worldly” than said imaginary DJ. I just happened to stumble across this album in my routine web foragings, and thank God for that, as otherwise this blogpost wouldn’t exist.

Take it the Ease! An Interview with Armenian Space Station

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

With a full head of steam from a very successful show across the Atlantic in their home country of Armenia, Armenian Space Station is preparing to take off in the United States with their first show at the Roxy on April 10th. When I first heard about them, they were described to me as “Metallica meets Mozart.” Despite my skepticism, after my first listen, I could understand why. Almost effortlessly, they combine the in your face energy of heavy metal with the immaculate technical craftsmanship of classical music and add in a pinch of prog rock experimentation to create a sonic experience that is simultaneously familiar and comfortable yet new and refreshing.

I got to sit down with the primary song writers of the band last week, drummer Barrett Yeretsian and keyboardist Greg Hosharian, to learn more about their band, their sound, their album release show coming up on April 10th at the Roxy and, of course, how their now famous catch phrase “Take it the Ease” came to be.

Beauty and the Beat

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I look out my window and I realize that the days are getting longer and longer and fortunately there is a direct correlation to my enthusiasm for music, for it continues to blossom as Spring is staring at us directly in the eyes. Oh man we’re almost there… Introducing alternative hip hop of a deeper, darker, funkier, and psychedelia mashing place that produces a beautiful genre of sound that can and will be defined by the highly highly respected emcee, as well as record producer EDAN.  Edan (prounounced eee-dawn) is a bi-product of the very reputable Berklee School of Music in Boston majoring in production.  Since his departure from the school in 200o Edan has produced 3 brain blowing mixtapes as well as three self-recorded albums transcending all thoughts of what was possible from hip hop.  I have the utmost respect for the album I am about to share with you, as does the rest of the hip hop community constantly.

Edan aka Edan Portnoy

Edan aka Edan Portnoy

Edan took his form of hip hop and took it from experimental in other’s eyes and incorporated as well as established his sound to be forever incorporated with hip hop itself.  Beauty and the Beat will blow your mind with its 60s rock samples, french over dubs, and the idiosyncrasy brought by the sensational linguistics on the album. The album was released in 2004 and got Edan and Lewis Records on the map. Kick of your shoes, do what you do and immerse yourself in this beautiful collaboration of sound.CLICK FOR BEAUTY AND THE BEAT

A Seriously Awesome Film: A Serious Man (2009) DVD

Saturday, March 13th, 2010
epic

epic

“When the truth is found.  To be lies.  And all the hope.  Within you dies.  Then what?  Grace Slick.  Marty Balin.  Paul Kanta.  Jorma…something.  These are the members of the Airplane.” – Rabbi Marshak/Jefferson Airplane

If you were one of the handfuls of people like me that went to see Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest film when it was in limited release last October, then more power to you.  But if you’re like most people that didn’t catch it on the big screen, I suggest you check out the DVD (which hit stores Feb. 9th).  The film is a black comedy set in 1967, focusing on Larry Gopnik, the patriarch of a Midwestern Jewish family.  Larry’s a physics professor, whose life takes an unpleasant turn when his wife asks for a get (document of divorce in Hebrew), his tenure becomes threatened by anonymous letters, and he begins to question anything and everything around him, including Hashem.

Although the film is considered to be one of the Coen brothers’ more personal and darker comedies, the film is a lot of fun at times, with an awesome score and soundtrack fueled by the genius composer Carter Burwell (The Blindside, Where the Wild Things Are, No Country for Old Men), and great tracks by Jefferson Airplane, including “Somebody To Love,” the definitive song of the film.  And when you watch the film, be sure to not miss the track “Machine Gun” from Jimi Hendrix that plays during the strange story that a divorce lawyer shares with Larry.  That track is not included in the film’s movie soundtrack, which is sacrilegious, because quite frankly that song is bada**.

Bonus Features of the Film Include:

Becoming Serious – a behind the scenes look into the film with commentary from the Coen brothers.  They talk about how the movie is the most close to home film they’ve made yet.

Creating 1967 – another behind the scenes with commentary from the cast and crew.  Jess Gonchor (Production Designer) is given a chance to shine, showcasing all the detail he put into the film’s visual design.  What’s also cool is that the abandoned school they were filming at also served as a soundstage, and housed a few of the sets (bedrooms, hotel room).

Hebrew and Yiddish for Goys – a fun little short, providing definitions to Hebrew terms used throughout the film.

Examples:

masel tov: congratulation and good luck

goy: gentile or non-Jew

tsuris: aggravating trouble

ABOUT JIMMY EDGAR

Street-smart and wise-beyond-his-years, Jimmy Edgar wanders the
desolated streets of junky occupied steaming sewers, an urban ghost
town under deconstruction. Reeling through a jungle of industrious
landscapes, abandoned buildings, isolated alley ways and homeless
people. In the midst of which lies intense feelings of jadedness and
despair that makes the city all the more musical in its thriving
evolving decay, and being the inspiration to a unique style which
critics rant as being: Songs with "a richly textured character –softly
softly blending a hazy arrangement of static with an engrossing
nighttime beat. Scratches galore and moody electronic pulses… via some
glorious Detroit Neon," Boomkat 2002.

Poster child of sound couture Jimmy Edgar, who dropped studies in
fashion and design to concentrate on making music, has a background of
art production and style which reads much like an urban landscape
dissertation. Snatching all kinds of influences from his Detroit
dwelling: the city's decay, urban fashion, and the city's eclectic
music scene, Edgar manufactures unique and provocative ultra modern
sound environments.

ABOUT RICHARD DEVINE

Richard Devine is one of the most talented (if not prolific) of the
producers organized around the Miami neo-electro haven of Schematic
Records. Based in Atlanta, Devine's productions have the rigid
breakbeat swing of prime electro recordings, but also a high degree of
DSP (digital signal processing) magic in keeping with Schematic's
acknowledged heroes, Autechre. After EPs for a sublabel of Woody
McBride's Drop Bass Network and the Devine EP on Schematic, the
producer began getting a reputation in advanced electronics circles
with remixes (of material by Aphex Twin, Chris Deluca, Slicker, and
Schematic's own Phoenecia) as well as compilation appearances
(Ischemic Folks and Lily of the Valley, both on Schematic). Turned on
to Devine's work by praise from Autechre and his remix of Aphex Twin's
"Come to Daddy," Britain's Warp Records hired him in 2000 to record a
full-length. The results, Lipswitch, were jointly released one year
later by Schematic and Warp.

ABOUT MIKE GERVAIS

For over twelve years DJ/producer/designer Mike Gervais has blazed an
artistic trail ahead of his peers. Through the avid exploration of
modern music technologies, his technique is constantly evolving.  His
performances deliver an extraordinary range of superlative sounds,
swarming with bursts of real-time composition, looping, sampling, and
effects. His DJ sets and original compositions have earned him
critical acclaim from international producers and performers, earning
him gigs across the United States and Canada. Mike serves as creative
director for Timefog and has releases on Solar Cathedral Recordings
and Timefog.  As a promoter, producer, performer, programmer, and
designer he has been a driving force behind legendary Minneapolis
events put on by Intellephunk, Klik Musik, SecretTechno, and
Convergence. From 1999-2003 he also contributed to Drop Bass events in
Wisconsin and Richie Hawtin?s events in Detroit.   Now Mike stands,
armed with his own creative ferfor and clairvoyance, at the edge.
Timefog, his visionary archetype, unfolding and expanding unto
infinity.

Album Review – Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions

Friday, March 12th, 2010
Only Revolutions

Only Revolutions

Before listening to Biffy Clyro’s new record I was able to see them live on March 10th, a day after the record came out, when they opened for Manchester Orchestra at the Troubadour. The moment these three men walked on stage I was hooked. They walked out without shirts and their skin was covered in tattoos. The set started and after the first few songs I knew that I would be buying anything and everything that this band has released.

Biffy Clyro formed in Scotland in 1995. Their music is a mix between a little bit of metal with some alternative rock. You shouldn’t trust me on that description though because when it come to genres I get confused. Back to the music, after the concert I knew that I had to go to my room and buy their newest album on itunes. If I weren’t so lazy I would’ve taken the bus to Amoeba and picked up a physical copy but I’ll settle with just having a digital copy of this amazing record.

The album opens with “The Captain” a song that I fell in love with on Wednesday night. It starts with stomping feet and a yell that prepares you for a great song. With lines like “Somebody help me sing can anybody hear me?” and “We’re gonna make a scene” you can’t help but want to sing along with Simon Neil (lead singer) even if you don’t know the words. The album slows down with the fourth song “God & Satan” The writing in the song is relatable, to me anyway, and Neil’s voice and accent just make the song stand out from the other faster paced songs. This song is followed by “Born On A Horse” in which Neil’s accent is more pronounced. The song is catchy and it makes me want to dance a little. Another slow song on the album is “Many of Horror” This is what I think a song should sound like. It should start off slowly and build up until the final moments of the song. The album as a whole is unique and well done. The lyrics of each song are simply perfect. I can’t wait until this band comes back to Los Angeles for another show I will be sure to buy tickets the moment they go on sale.

Sounds Like: I can’t quite explain what this album sounds like to people who haven’t heard it. It’s like nothing I’ve heard before, but that may just be because of the lead singer’s Scottish accent. The album sounds a bit like  something Ville Valo might do, except slightly different and a bit more upbeat.

Songs I Recommend: I recommend the whole album, only $9.99 on itunes! It’s worth it. But if you want to just have a taste of what this band sounds like then I recommend “The Captain” – I guarantee that you will be hooked after listening to just this one song.

Totally Rad!!! Thursdays 8pm – 10pm

the Foals!

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Has anyone else heard Spanish Sahara or watched this music video yet? This new music video came out on March 2nd. The name of the song alone gave me tingles down the spine. The setting for the music video just reminded me my last summer when I went to South America. I spent July on the Chilean side of the Andes snowboarding and in August on the Argentine side sledding and getting in a real snow fight for the first time in my life. On top of the ethereal colors of the video, the movement of the waters in the video is mesmerizing…

I really loved their Antidotes album from 2008, so this new single from the UK is just a taste of what’s to come. If you liked this, keep your eyes open for the new record dropping on May 10th, Total Life Forever.
