How to avoid the inevitable…

Thursday, March 11th, 2010
Watch out for that star!

As finals draw near, what is it that stress ridden college students normally do? Confront their stress by doing their work and getting it done in the shortest most efficient way possible? No, of course not! The majority of us will be whittling our time away on facebook, cleaning out that obscure area under our desk, or re-organizing our sock drawer in an effort to procrastinate on writing our final papers.

But now I introduce to you to another fabulous way to procrastinate – Robot Unicorn Attack! The goal of this side scrolling game is to collect as many faeries as possibly, in order to get your “wishes” granted (like getting your paper done without having to do anything work). Not only can you avoid your work by galloping across a purple landscape filled with fairies and giant metal stars, you can listen to Erasure’s “Always,” the one and only song in the game’s soundtrack. By the time you realize you need to stop playing this surprisingly addictive game and get back to the inevitable, Erasure’s ridiculously cheesy synthpop ballad will be firmly ingrained in your mind. Not that it’s a bad thing. Whenever I’m down, I just think of this song, and images of leaping through rainbow littered clouds in an effort to get my wishes granted always makes me smile.

Harmonic is proud to pair up with the Bonus Level Agency and present a proper closing party to the Winter season at DAMAGED GOODS with the showcase of four very talented DJs, and to celebrate the launch of the BONUSLEVEL website.

Circus Company label head SETY (Mathias Duchemin) will be making his Los Angeles debut, and Harmonic couldn’t be more excited. If you’re not familiar with Mathias, he has been a fierce and tireless activist within Paris’ electronic underground scene, determined to carve out a space for unconventional, experimental dance music. In 1999 he co-founded the Circus Company label, along with fellow artists Kean and Freak, of Nôze; in 10 years, it has grown from a local outpost into an international hub. With a roster including Nôze, Ark, Dave Aju, dOP, Mossa, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts and DJ Koze, among many others, Circus Company has become one of Europe’s most respected modern house labels.

Sety spent much of the label’s history working behind the scenes, aside from a handful of tracks for Circus Company, Karat and Logistic (where he had the honor of remixing the godfather of minimal techno, Robert Hood). But it’s become clear that he’s not just talented DJ and curator, but also a formidable producer. His 2008 Sweet & Sour EP—which included a beautiful and often-charted remix by Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts -showed an unusual focused attention to the fusion of tones, textures and grooves in a powerful current of deep house energy. (It was all the more unusual considering that it was his first solo EP release.) Sweet & Sour received enthusiastic support from the likes of Luciano, Daniel Bell, Zip, and Ricardo Villalobos—but you wouldn’t need to know that to be swayed by the record’s immediacy. Since then, Sety has gone on to remix Butane, and more releases are in store.

Sety’s years behind the curtain didn’t curtail his activity behind the decks, however. His vision and his versatility have confirmed Sety as one of the most promising artists in a new generation of house musicians. He holds a residency at Paris’ Rex Club, where the Circus Company family comes together, and also plays at some of the world’s most celebrated clubs—Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Zurich’s Dachkantine, London’s Fabric, São Paulo’s D-Edge…If you’ve ever caught him at any of those places, or perhaps at a party with no name in a building with no address, on a night where you lost your phone and have nothing to prove that it ever happened, you’ll recognize the familiar feeling that Sety exudes. As with Circus Company’s records, it’s a vision of house music that folds its history into something familiar and strange all at once: mercurial, pulsing, unpredictable, sensual, and unforgettable.

Lock your doors and hide your daughters, because Bill Patrick will be making his triumphant return to assist in headlining duties. Coming from a musical background that included various styles from punk to hip hop, new wave to dub, Bill’s love for dance music began in 1998 after attending his first New York rave. He frequented the legendary club Twilo and Vinyl almost every Friday until its closing in 2001. In a short time as a DJ, he has piled up an impressive resume with a residency at New York’s famed club Arc (formerly Vinyl), played some of the best clubs throughout the world, and has worked alongside many of the scene’s most revered DJ’s.

He is also one of the co-founders of ROBOTS, a techno collaboration that hosted some of New York City’s most successful club events. Since 2004, the group pulled together an impressive list of guests and headliners that included; Sven Vath, Francois K, Luciano, Ellen Allien, Radioactive Man, Tiefschwarz, Michael Mayer, Superpitcher, DJ Three, Mike Shannon, Run Stop Restore, Matthew Dear…..the list goes on and on.

Bill’s passport has filled up nicely with international gigs in Mexico City, Costa Rica, Chile, Buenos Aires, and on to Spain, Italy, Norway, Romania and Germany. Over the past couple of years he has been heard on the mainfloor at Fabric, Cocoon club in Frankfurt, as well as numerous gigs in Ibiza, including the legendary “We Love…” party at Space, and regular appearances for Circo Loco at DC-10. Kick starting 2004 was a New Years Eve set at the world renowned techno club Tresor in Berlin.

Now residing in Berlin, Bill is slated to mix the first cd compilation for Weekend Club as well as focusing on his own production and keeping busy touring Europe. Surrounded by the ceaseless inspiration of friends and artists that thrive in the city he looks forward to taking on the next level of his career.

Opening and closing duties on this grandioso evening of dance music will go to local movers and shakers ALEX VILLALOBOS – the famed resident of the Absurd underground series, as well as Harmonic founder and Avalon resident – JAKE PATRICK.

Added audio and visual stimulation will be present with a boosted sound system and intelligent lighting, setting the mood for a party that will undeniably pop off the chain. Get ready for a night of forward thinking house music from beginning to end, proving to be a collaboration to remember!!

(DJ) Sasha and Kazell @ Avalon

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010
March 13, 2010 11:00 pmtoMarch 14, 2010 6:00 am

Sasha is one of those DJs who needs little introduction. The man has come a long way from his first DJ gig in a local Manchester pub. An extremely talented studio producer, Sasha is also blessed with the rare gift of being able to make good records sound better. His innate ability to read a dancefloor and create sets that tap into this human experience is coupled with a depth of musical knowledge that allows him to blend house, trance, breaks, progressive and techno into a languid hypnotic groove. Whether ruling the roost at Ibiza’s Space, touring North America while playing to warehouses of more than 15,000 or selling well over a million records, Sasha exemplifies where hard work and talent can get you. We are excited to welcome him to Avaland.

Album Review: Dead or Alive – Youthquake (1985)

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

DOA: Youthquake

So you’re probably puzzled as to why I’m reviewing such an old album. 1985 is not a typo and this album is 25 years old! However, I also believe that this particular album has stood the test of time quite well! Nope, this is not the video game called “Dead or Alive”. This is the band that rocked the 80’s with their unique synthesizer sounds, and provocative attitude/attires. Started in 1980 in Liverpool, England, their album “Youthquake” (released in 1985) is probably their most recognized album, as it also contains their most famous song, “You Spin Me Around”.

So why should you even continue reading this review, since it’s about an extremely archaic album? I think we can all agree that today’s music lacks uniqueness, and most of it, including the rhythms and beats, sound the same! So I offer you a chance to taste an “older wine” that you have perhaps never tasted before. Of course, most people have heard of “You Spin Me Around”, but have you heard of the other songs by Dead or Alive? You’re not alone if you haven’t, as most people in the USA, including myself before 2009, have no clue as to the other songs they’ve played. Most of all, it may surprise you that many of their other songs are actually better than “You Spin Me Around”. Therefore, I offer you a chance to delve into the past, and try something new, or should I say very old, but different!

E-40 Will Blow You Away

Friday, March 5th, 2010

E-40

On February 24, 2010 it was announced that E-40 and Busta Rhymes would be playing a free show in Ackerman Grand Ballroom as part of the collaboration between the Hip Hop Congress, CAC, and CEC of UCLA. People had to reserve their spots on a waiting list in order to be let in, which promptly filled up. After a late start, the show began.

The event kicked off with a performance of dance crews that had been on shows like America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV. They danced on the floor with a huge barrier surrounding them, making it nearly impossible to watch if you were less than 6 feet tall. After their little performance, the show began with E-40, but before I start talking about the concert, I feel that one thing must be said: Busta Rhymes, the headliner, NEVER SHOWED. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the headliner to this exclusive free event bailed on his audience. (more…)

AVALAND – Loco Dice presents A Desolat Bus Tour with Martin Buttrich, Livio & Roby

Loco Dice

German born Loco Dice has blazed quite a path to DJ superstardom. Starting off as a hip-hop performer he has rapped on stage with some of the best, supporting Usher, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube and more. A fervor for the underground led him to leave the chart topping German hip-hop scene in favor of house and techno music. Dice honed his DJ talents at Ibiza’s bastion of cutting edge experimentation, DC-10. The cinematic quality of his sets is underpinned with solid, physical grooves. There’s
something there for the dreamers, as well as for the 9-to-5ers who just want to lose everything in a moment of
abandon on the dancefloor. He is joined by his fellow Desolat label boss and long-time collaborator and now LA resident, Martin Buttrich.

Martin Buttrich

Martin Buttrich is something of a mystery. Quiet and unassuming in real life, Buttrich is the quintessential silent studio partner. Or at least he used to be. In collaboration, he’s produced pop (The Sugarbabes), Italo house (Sounds of Life) and progressive (over one hundred collaborations with Timo Maas). He’s even been nominated for a Grammy (remixing Tori Amos ‘Don’t Make Me Come to Vegas’). But it wasn’t until 2006 that Buttrich came to prominence under his own name, releasing 12”s on Four: Twenty, Poker Flat and Carl Craig‘s Planet-E (‘Full Clip’). Buttrich still collaborates, chiefly working behind the studio desk for Loco Dice.

Martin Buttrich runs Time Tools studio in Hannover, Germany but is based in New York. But currently is a LA Resident.

Livio & Roby

With consistent studio output and live sets over the last four years, 2010 looks set to be their year, with Dj’s including Loco Dice and Steve Lawler heavily strengthening their profile with huge support in their backbeat of warm-swung loops that drift towards the sounds of early house and never fail to unwind with a looped combination of stunning tones, subtle synths and intricate drums.

Riding high on the techno scene’s recent climate change with grooves that twist and turn each bar yet never loose the consistent grasping control over your body’s lower torso; Livio and Roby have been producing percussive prompted beats with a natural European zest long before the majority of today’s techno dj’s ripped back the parched electronic layer to reveal a more organic house sound. Displaying exceptional production skills, early releases and remixes appeared on Lawler’s Global Underground “Lights out 3″ and “Viva” compilations.

On top of clearly knowing their way around a pair of turntables, 2007 followed with releases thick and fast; the classic simplicity of their gritty underground sound, assembled into increasingly energetic tracks made Livio and Roby one of the most visible names of the deep house resurgence.
2008 saw the pair share the turntables alongside Loco Dice in Romania resulting in the ultimate testament to their musical talent. Dice welcomed Livio and Roby into his community of creativeness, promptly inviting then to join both his booking agency Artist Alife and much applauded label Desolat where they went on to release “Mistique” in collaboration with their pal George G. From their early appearance in the booth with Loco Dice and Martin Buttich at Cocoons Ibiza residency to recent singles on Nick Curly’s Cecille imprint, the two Romania producers have built quite a reputation for themselves that really justifies the heavy hype that’s been surrounding them of late.

On Friday March 5, INCOGNITO proudly presents Sole Channel Music NYC head, MR. V (New York).

On top of being signed up with Masters Of Work, Defected, Ricanstraction, Vega Records, Strictly Rhythm and more, he continually gets acclaim and support from Frankie Feliciano, Louie Vega, DJ Deep, and of course, his co-owner of Sole Channel Music, Alix Alvarez.

It would be good to note that he has a lot of love for LA as his right hand man with the Sole Channel Music label is LA denizen Will Reelsoul Rodriguez.

Experiencing Mr. V’s DJ sets, original productions, or remixes is like taking a trip back in time to dance music’s golden age. His sets are based on the premise of being spontaneous, jumping and breaking genres, always excellent but never predictable, a throwback if you must put a finger on it. But whatever happens, a few things you can be sure of is, MR. V always manages to be different, to be cutting edge and to always bring people together on the dancefloor.

If only all DJ’s were like MR. V, the world would be one happy place of amazing dance music.

Album Review: Brazil’s Hottest Flips Our Switch

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
LSDelic!

Take Mark thecobrasnake, flip him Brazilian and slip him a tab — and you’ve got Marcio Local, the latest surprise in a basket of world tunes straight from South America. With boss vocal stamina and endless variations on the Rio party soundtrack, Local’s a hot little number we can’t stand to miss.

Granted, it’s been a slow burn. His latest drop, Says Don Day Don Dree Don Don shipped stateside in May ’09. Single “Soul Do Samba” secured a spot on the FIFA 10 Soccer Soundtrack for the notoriously addictive video game — right next to station faves Metric, Passion Pit and Peter Bjorn and John. Since then, Local’s been edging into our staunchly ’merican-stream. (Mostly by way of poorly stocked world music sections in Borders and Barnes & Noble … but never mind that pet peeve.)

Despite his consummate peers — namely, the Bossa Nova sensuality of CéU and the still-banging sex of Don Omar — Local shimmies through. He plucks steamy soul and big band horns; he samples the sweat of carnivale, birds-of-paradise, micro-bikinis and heels. That deep bossa voice — that relentless samba beat. It steals us away, until all we can smell is the salt of that damn South Atlantic. Until all we want to do is plunge in, and dance.

Right from the start, “Samba Sem Nunhum Problema” slides so easy and sweet, you’ve barely registered the beach-beat and Local’s round O-voice before it’s over. A rat-a-tat rap starts “Prexta Luxo,” the city-boy’s gorgeously-voiced homage to Brazil. Its streetwalk-rhythm cues head-bopping, then pulls on horns like a second skin. Effortless layering skates through the album. In “Soul Do Samba,” the album’s namesake rocks ocean-like over ganza shell-shakers, deep surdo drums and Local’s slick rap-to-vocal transitions.

And with this last element, Local knocks us out and takes us home. His vocal delivery — a cool, senselessly chic twist on classically-trained pipes — is almost too easy. He fingers our buttons, flips our switches. Even if, sliding between sunlit samba soul and bustling big-city beats, Local’s tracks tend to sound somewhat similar…who cares?

At the end of the night, when the girls pin up their sex hair and the boys swipe away their guyliner — when the bottle-to-person ratio reaches 7:1 — when the sunrise slices its first pink rays across that beautiful frosted hungover sky — when you can almost smell the ocean — and Local’s winding down our bones with “Happy Endings”… something changes.

Because at the end of the night, Local’s suaveness sinks right down into your skin. And somehow, like him, we’ve suddenly got all the right moves.

Stones Throw-back Sound

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Once again the Stones Throw label has provided Headz with a dose of much needed nostalgia. While industry standards have reduced just aint gonna wrk out 7rap music into an efficient mechanism for reproducing monotonous 60’s soul samples played at 45rpm and Dr Sues/ Mother Goose rhymes, Stones Throw returns to a simpler time.  The label that gave us the Jazz revision with a Hip-Hop twist, Yesterday’s New Quintet, and artists like Madlib and Quasimoto, once again appeals to our broader tastes.

With it’s 2009 release of Mayer Hawthorne’s “A Strange Arrangement,” the L.A. independent label crosses the generational divide. Reminiscent of artists like the Delfonics, Bloodstone, Impressions, and young Stevie Wonder, Hawthorne’s soulful strut transports listeners into time’s past.  With the simplicity of a meat and potatoes analog recording, Hawthorne is the quintessential oldie but goodie.  His voice navigates the warm bass and trademark live drum breaks like a true pro.  But wait don’t be alarmed!  He is a hippster white-boy from Ann Arbor Michigan.  Regardless of what his crappy indie rock Silverlake/ Echo Park attire might imply, Hawthorne is a wonderful addition to the Stones Throw catalog.  After signing with DJ Peanut Butter Wolf’s Stone Throw label, Hawthorne moved to the City of Angels and has quickly become a personal favorite.

In these times of technological advancement where CDJ’s, Serato and Traktor Scratch Pro have predicted the death of vinyl culture, Hawthorne’s Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out single was released on a blood red heart shaped vinyl as a classy way of paying homage to the True-School DJ’s. The Youtube video aint bad either. The song is a compelling break-up song that seemingly leaves the door open for a future friendship complete with benefits.  For the die hard vinyl lovers the heart shaped single is a must have and fairly obtainable at the few record stores still in operation (Ameoba).
