The Bloody Beetroots//Death Crew 77//Sinden

Didn’t get tickets to the Bloody Beetroots at the Hollywood Palladium before it sold out? No worries. HARD has added a second night, and the masked men are back for round two this time flanked by a who’s who list of artists in the dance/electro scene including Sinden and Jokers of the Scene.

Performing live in Venom (ya know from Spiderman?) masks, The Bloody Beetroots (and Death Crew 77) have gained a passionate worldwide following, selling out venues across Europe. Described as a bastard son of the Misfits and Daft Punk, their music encompasses aspects of all types of genres, ranging from pop, punk, and hip-hop to classical music, house and techno. And with Death Crew 77 live on stage you will see all of the pieces of the music you are hearing, from the piano, to the drums to the guitars. This isn’t just a guy standing behind his laptop. It’s revolutionary. They know how to party.

So no bummin out that you missed on grabbing tickets for the Saturday show, because they are back by popular demand for round two on Sunday night. It’s gonna be an incredible show.

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

mid_east

In case you don’t know by now, Voices of The Middle East is a unique program on UCLAradio.com. Every week the host, Khalid Seirafi, chooses a socio-political theme and discusses it from both Western and Middle Eastern perspectives. The show frequently features phone and live interviews with guests ranging from professors to students and activists. The program aims to focus on a different country from the region in every episode. It airs every Wednesday from 7-8PM, but in case you missed the last episode it is included here for your convenience. All future episodes will be uploaded to this blog as well, so check back and don’t miss out on this special listening experience.

Week 3: Syria

This show is on Syria, its renewed political influence in the region, its foreign relations, and economic development. This program features an interview with Dr. Joshua Landis, the Director of the Center for Middle East Studies and Associate Professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

Week 1: East Jerusalem Settlements

This show’s theme is the East Jerusalem settlements issue and the long-term implications of Israeli settlement policy on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. My guest to discuss this topic was the former president of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UCLA and a fellow grad student in Islamic Studies, Khalid Hussein.

CONCERT REVIEW: Coachella April 16-18, 2010

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

On April 16, 17, and 18, a miracle happened.  The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival proved to the world that not is all lost with music today (even though Justin Beiber rules the music tabloids).  Coachella restored my faith in modern music because of strong sets from bands like MGMT, The Dead Weather, Them Crooked Vultures, LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Les Claypool, Pavement, Thom Yorke (with Flea on bass, honestly one of the coolest things I have ever seen), Devo, and of course Muse, who I will now bow down to and pray to the Music Gods for them to make a new album on a daily basis. Rap legend and lyrical pioneer GURU recently died after a long private battle with cancer  on April 19th at the age of 43.  Characterized by his laid back monotone style of rhyming and deeply profound lyrical content, the vocal half of the awesome duo Gang Starr, continues to be one of the most influential artists in the hip hop community.   (more…)

Zion I Mighty at the Mighty Mic

Monday, April 19th, 2010

DSCF0356Zion I represented real hard at the 4th Mighty Mic awareness concert held at UCLA’s Ackerman Grand Ballroom on April 14th. While the event to raise awareness about the current crisis taking place in the Congo was informative, Zion I added the necessary sounds to motivate people into action. The booming sound system sufficiently carried the atmospheric compositions of DJ/producer AmpLive, while MC Zumbi’s animated lyrics kept the audience on their toes.

The Oakland California natives were accompanied by vocalist Codany Holiday who brought the audience into perfect harmony.

Opening up their set with the 808 heavy “Juicy Juice” off of their newest album “The Take Over”, Zion I set the pace early for the rest of the show.  Being roughly six albums deep in the game, Zion I was able to draw upon a litany of banging hip hop material.

Pausing briefly when a rising cloud of smoke began emanating from somewhere in the front row, Zumbi laughingly said “it wasn’t me,” then went right back to business.  While the marijuana culprit was escorted out by security, Zion I was able to save our high by playing “Silly Puddy” from the “Mind over Matter” album.

Showcasing his abilities as a producer and entertainer, AmpLive walked confidently from behind the turntables and into the spotlight.  The audience roared as he methodically tapped at the beat machine with glowing orange and purple neon lights hanging at his hip.

UCLA Embracing the Oakland MC

After roughly an hour of non-stop musical euphoria, Zumbi intimately discussed the importance of doing what you love and following your dreams.  As the lights dimmed the opening of “Birds eye View” began playing, bringing together the steady sway of hands which remained in the air as if weightless.

Definitely one of my favorite crews, Zion I continues to provide the proverbial breath of fresh air.  Their creative draw is indicative of the Bay areas long standing reputation of staying sucker free and carving out their own path.

In addition to purchasing the new Zion I album, Keep a third eye open for AmpLive’s recent solo release “Murder At The Discotech.”

Avi Buffalo @ The Troubadour

Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo

2009 was quite the year for Long Beach quartet Avi Buffalo. Formed at Millikan High when frontman Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg was just a junior, Avi Buffalo has been on nearly every indie magazine’s “Bands to Watch in 2010” list. Just over a year ago, Avi was dominating the Long Beach and Los Angeles music scene, prompting a phone call from Sub Pop Records A&R head Tony Kiewel. Just months later, the group was signed to the prominent indie label out of Seattle.

Avi Buffalo celebrates their debut, self-titled album’s release on May 1st at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. After pounding out on the guitar for 12 hours a day during his youth, and taking lessons from renowned local blues artists, Avi has become a very talented and polished musician. It will be a momentous night for both Avi and the band as they play at one of LA’s premiere venues.

BeatSwapMeet Celebrates the Deuce

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

235-backVinyl lovers, vendors, and artisans gathered on April 11th for the 2nd anniversary of the Beat Swap Meet at the Grandstar Jazz Club in Chinatown. The tri-monthly event transforms the multi-level Grandstar into a crowded market full of wheelers and dealers haggling over prices of rare dusty records.

Admission to the event  is always free with the contribution of a canned food item, making it easier to spend your money on that hard to find Herbie Hancock album.  Sifting through crates and cardboard boxes seemed tedious at times but the constant injection of rare music from the various sound systems made it an enjoyable experience.

Ranging from hip-hop to world music the vast selection reflected the many tastes of L.A.’s vinyl community.  “It’s always good to see everybody coming together around music, especially vinyl culture,” said DJ Luman, who has been coming to the Beat Swap Meet off-and-on since its founding.

Visibly a family affair, collectors pushed strollers and toted babies in slings through the crowded

DJ's SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT BEAT

market, illuminating the community vibe.  The event was a literal whose-who of local area DJ’s and artists handing out free CD’s and promotional materials to the eager crowd.  One of the many highlights of the day was the impromptu B-boy/girl cyphers and emcee freestyles that took place in front of the Huskeyradio.com booth outside.

The festive atmosphere was complete with a DJ battle, live graffiti art, a food truck and casual drank provided by the Grandstar bar.  If you can dig the crackling sound of LP’s and want to meet the DJ’s who keep them in the mix, I strongly recommend the BeatSwap.

BeatSwapMeet is a tri-monthly event located at the Grandstar Jazz Club at 943 N Broadway Los Angeles CA 90012, for more information you can check their website at www.beatswapmeet.com

Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders @ The Troubadour

April 20, 2010 8:00 pmtoApril 21, 2010 12:00 am

Taylor Hawkins
Taylor Hawkins

Taylor Hawkins has arguably been one of the top drummers of rock n roll over the past decade. He’s the current drummer for the Foo Fighters but also the drummer and frontman for Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders, a small side project turned full-fledged venture. The group has gotten a lot of buzz over the last couple years (formed back in late 2004), and respected artists like The Police’s drummer Stewart Copeland (one of the best drummers of all time keep in mind) have come out in support.

Hawkins and the Coattail Riders headline a show on April 20th at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, just one day after the release of their second album, Red Light Fever. The success of their self-titled debut (2006) led to scoring some prominent features on the upcoming release including Queen’s drummer Roger Taylor, The Cars’ lead guitarist Elliot Easton and Foo Fighters bandmate and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. With a album lineup like that you can be certain that the show will be one incredible performance.

Dios Malos opens. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.troubadour.com
