Progressive Rock Band, “Once a Tiger”, plays 2 amazing songs inside the station!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Two weeks ago, progressive rock band, “Once a Tiger”, came in and played live on UCLARadio. The band, consisting of 5 members, blasted the radio station with amazing drums, guitar, and singing right inside our lobby! We even had to get permission to have them play. Although not shown in the YouTube video, we would later interview them about the life of a rock band, including sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll. Their answer was summed up quite simply as, “Don’t do drugs, enjoy sex, and love rock”. The two songs they played are called “Fading Away: Part 2″ and “Kamikaze”.

“Once a Tiger” was formed in Agoura Hills, CA. The lead singer is Clinton Bragger, and the guitarists and co-singers are Devin Murdoch, Max Albert, and Austin Bragger. Lastly, their amazing drummer is Chris Marlette. They hope to release an album this summer. You can listen to more of their songs on the MySpace or Facebook links below.

INCOGNITO Global & Friends to the End present CADENZA vs MOBILEE

FRIDAY 28th MAY 2010 // MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

INCOGNITO Global and Friends To The End present

2nd Annual Sleazy T-Shirt party feat. CADENZA vs MOBILEE

It’s that time again, kids. After the overwhelming, sidesplitting success of last year we’re at it again. INCOGNITO Global and Friends to the End present the 2nd Annual Sleazy T-Shirt party! If you were there you don’t need to read on, you just need to click the link and get your presale. If you weren’t, the rules are: Wear your most ridiculous, offensive, disgusting, wrongest of the wrong statement T for entry to this Memorial Day weekend kickoff shitstravaganza. This year the line-up itself garners massive praise, so be ready to get those dirty shirts even dirtier. It’s going to be a sweaty mess, and we mean it. We’ve challenged two of dance music’s best labels to a duel: Cadenza vs. mobilee. Need we say more??? Probably not, but just in case:

Swiss-born DJ/producer, MIRKO LOKO, is making his Los Angeles debut after sweeping fanatical kudos at this years WMC. Dispensing sounds that take shape at an invigorating intersection between Detroit-inspired techno and the subtle stripped-down side of house. As a DJ, he’s played Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Miami WMC, Circoloco in Ibiza, Sven Väth’s Cocoon Club in Frankfurt and the best clubs in Berlin, while recent productions include an EP on Loco Dice’s Desolat imprint and a solo album on Luciano’s Cadenza. Cadenzarecords.com

Repeat offender and mobilee label founder RALF KOLLMANN returns to LA for his first proper summer spin riding in the wake of last month’s killer showing by label wunderkinds Pan Pot and Sebo K. Founded in 2005 by Kollmann and super fly dj/producer Anja Schneider, this summer starts the kick off of the mobilee 5 year anniversary tour. With a roster of acts that reads like a who’s who of the best of the best: Anja Schnieder, Pan Pot, Sebo K, Dan Curtin, Marcin Czubala, Exercise One and And.Id it’s no wonder the label is such a staple for our eager ears. The last year has seen Kollmann globetrotting from one continent to the next with stops in Dubai, South Africa, Switzerland, New York, Miami, the UK…you name it. His passport stamps are almost as varied as the music he spins, from super secret promos we’ll still be waiting months to hear again to stone cold classics, as well as a healthy dose of his own labels funky, sexy cuts. The arc of a Kollmann set makes you feel like you’ve been on a trip yourself. Mobilee-records.de

Setting up the filth right are Listed resident DORY and birthday boy & INCOGNITO resident, CURTIS HELSON.

Presale tickets can be found here http://dirtyshirt2.eventbrite.com. We highly recommend you purchase your tickets in advance for guaranteed entry. We are expecting a capacity crowd. Come dressed your nasty best, totally incorrect or risk getting a raspberry to the face. Venue details will be released the day of the event so keep your eyes and ears open. For shirt ideas, if you have no originality in your own head or are just plain lazy, go here: tshirthell.com. We’ll see you on the dance floor!

CULPRIT + BIG present METRO AREA | DROOG | PHOTOCALL | THE BYSTANDERS

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
May 21, 2010 10:00 pmtoMay 22, 2010 3:00 am

On Friday May 21st, Culprit and Big will have a distinct pleasure of hosting an act that has provided an impetus and an inspiration to the entire generation of deep artists – METRO AREA. To those paying attention to the genres of dance music existing outside of the clubbing world, METRO AREA’s work has been a watershed. From the first seminal single in 1999, through incredibly familiar self-titled LP that collected some of their best tracks including the stone cold-classic “Miura”, to their solo outputs. MORGAN GEIST and DARSHAN JESRANI have been consistently breaking new ground. Live instruments mixed in with tight disco drum programming, influences of the post New Wave and classic Chicago house, Detroit futurism and the organic New York stylings – this duet has combined what is best of the 30 years of dance music in their own unique packaging.

On Friday May 21, INCOGNITO Global proudly presents the CLOSING PARTY for it’s month-long 3rd Year ANNIVERSARY Celebration with double headliners MARTIN EYERER (Kling Klong Label Head, Session Deluxe Label Head, Germany) and DJUMA SOUNDSYSTEM (Most Sold Track at Beatport, Get Physical, Denmark).

INCOGNITO was launched 3 years ago at the gothic hotspot Boardners. We had a short stint at Club Play then moved to our current home at King King Hollywood since Jan of 2008, where we have delivered the most consistent and luckily at times, the biggest nights of King King during the same period. In terms of bookings, we have always attempted to live up to our mission of “Where Amazing Cutting Edge Dance Music Happens” and we always push the envelope musically, from having Techno with Oliver Huntemann or John Selway, to Deep House with Marshall Jefferson or Eric Kupper, to eclectic genre-defying DJs like James Holden and Larry Tee. We have strived to open minds by usually bringing in DJs in their 1st LA Appearance and do not constrain ourselves to the usual LA bookings, and so far, it has worked with the loyal INCOGNITO Community growing bigger each 1st and 3rd Fridays when we throw our all-out parties. And on this night, we celebrate 3 years of trying our best with another line-up can only be described as amazing and cutting edge.

MARTIN EYERER, aka Headhunter, Licht Und Kraft, Mart Van Straaten, Royal Flash, Spencer & Davis, is a true musician and is signed up to Systematic,Audiomatique, Great Stuff, Kickboxer and on English big names like Renaissance and i/o records, on top of being the label head of Session Deluxe and Kling Klong, where he has released artists like Koletzki, Namito, Oliver Klein, Robert Babicz and more. His high-end studio meets the highest requirements and has become an interdisciplinary interface for mastering (whether it is Hip Hop, Pop or Electronic) and he is also co-producing several mainstream acts (Eyerer e.g.became a gold record in UK). On top of all this, the Tech-House Posse around him like Gui Boratto,Oliver Koletzki, Toni Rios, Stephan Hinz, Namito, Chopstick, Oliver Klein or Robert Babicz come to ‘his house’ to jam. He is an innovator and leader of the groovy tech house scene, and INCOGNITO is proud to deliver his Exclusive 1st LA Appearance on this special night.

DJUMA SOUNDSYSTEM is a Scandinavian Duo composed of Lars Bjarno Jensen & Mikkas Skulstad. For the EDM World, they became famous out of nowhere by producing the modern classic and the best selling track of Beatport ever “Les Djinns”. Since then, they have never looked back and have come out with hits like “Zillion Lights(Get Physical)”, “This Sound(Brut)”, “Jaded(Toolroom)”, “Bipolar(Rebirth) and more, as well as remixing for Kaskade, Antix, Def Jagur, Philip Cohen Solal(Gotan Project). Or in other words, their music continues to shine fiercely on dancefloors all over the globe, with no signs of dropping off. So in their 2nd LA Appearance, and their 1st LA gig on a weekend, INCOGNITO is honored to have this duo go INCOGNITO and show LA denizens how its supposed to be done.

Support this night will be lead by all our Resident DJs – ERPHUN, ANDROID CARTEL, ATOMIC MIKE, CACHE, FRANCO BENITO, MIKE BOLANTE, THE APARTMENT DJ’s, CAMACHO & VASS, CURTIS HELSON and VJ KRIS BERTRAND.

So we invite everyone as we look back at almost 70+ Friday parties of people turning INCOGNITO over the past few years and hope that in our own little way, we have made you sometimes smile, sometimes made you sweat and most of the times, we believe that we have made you dance like no one is looking.

We appreciate the continuous support for the past 3 years and please know that we realize that every time you go INCOGNITO, it has been, and will always be, our utmost privilege.

Francis and the Lights @ The Echo

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
May 21, 2010 12:00 amtoMay 22, 2010 12:00 am

Francis and the Lights

You may not have heard about Francis Farewell Strarlite, frontman of the vintage synth-pop group Francis and the Lights, but you can be damn sure that the rest of the music industry has. And don’t worry you will by the end of this year too. So how bout you get introduced to him now.

It’s not very often that artists of completely different genres fight over an opener for their shows, but in the 2010, Francis has already opened for Drake, MGMT & Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, three incredible artists of entirely different genres. It may seem weird to have a hip-hop, indie folk and experimental group fighting for you, but Francis really does sound like a funky mashup at times of so many different genres. The group has many claims to fame, including once performing an entire Otis Redding cd live and covering (very well actually) Kanye West’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”, but it’s their incredibly entertaining shows that has really brought the band to prominence in 2010. I mean their name is Francis and the LIGHTS.

Francis and the Lights have created a very polished sound with influences ranging across all genres—from James Brown soul to 80’s vintage Peter Gabriel to the jazz-fusions of Steely Dan and even a hint of modern day Ghostland Observatory. The music blends so beautifully though, creating a sincerely fun sound. And checking out other show reviews, they put on one of the most genuinely entertaining shows in the business right now. While most openers simply go through the motions, Francis and the Lights get the audience to nearly forget about the main act for the 45 minutes that they get to grace the stage.

Well, this Friday, May 21st, Francis and the Lights are headlining at The Echo here in Los Angeles. It is guaranteed to be an incredible show, that will go down as one of your favorite concerts of recent memory.

Tickets are only $8 in advance, or $10 the day of the show. Head to http://www.attheecho.com/ for more details.

Nas @ The Wiltern

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010
May 28, 2010 8:00 pmtoMay 29, 2010 12:00 am

At first glance people usually assume that my musical taste is limited to the indie rock genre. Sure, I dress like an indie kid but my musical taste is varied. I listen to Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, The Clash, The Beatles, the Misfits, Bright Eyes, and other artists. So, now that that’s out of the way let’s talk about Nas.

My brother first introduced me to Nas’ music. I wasn’t as open to different types of music as I am today but I’m glad that I have an older brother to teach me about new music. Nas is from New York City and his debut album, released in 1994, was critically acclaimed. Since then he’s released eight more albums.

So, why am I bringing up Nas in this post? Because he’s going to be in Los Angeles of course. I’m not just talking about him performing at the JazzReggae Festival but his performance at the Wiltern on May 28, 2010. If you’ve never been to the Wiltern for a show then you’ve been missing out. It’s a beautiful venue and I’m sure Nas will make it an unforgettable night. Tickets for the show are available on ticketmaster.com and they range from $40.50 – $50.50. If you like Nas and would love to see him live then you shouldn’t miss your chance to see him in Los Angeles.

Spring Sing 2010 Review

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

DJ Harper

For the second year in a row, the artists at Spring Sing have blown me away. For those of you that don’t know, every year SAA grabs the top talents around UCLA and we have a school-wide talent show on steroids. Pauley Pavilion sells out, people camp out for hours just to get tickets, and it’s one of the most looked forward to events of the entire school year. A capella groups, clubs, bands, duos, soloists and fraternity/sorority pairings turn in some of the most incredible performances each year, that always leaves the crowd saying “Wow, there is an incredible amount of talent here at UCLA”. Past winners of Spring Sing include Maroon 5, Tyrone Wells and Sara Bareilles. So you never know just what may come of Spring Sing. Here’s my top 3 acts from the 2010 edition:

#3 Los Dos-Our Youth.

They were super interesting and unlike any other Spring Sing act. Usually you get a ton of singer-songwriter/piano pop but this guy brought the indie/techno aspect that is blowing up in the music scene right now. The singer also played an electric harp looking thing while the other guy had a beat pad that he was doin serious work on.

They have some elements that remind me of The Postal Service and Owl City with vocals that remind me a lot of Mike Posner. Weird cross I know, but they were great musicians, risk takers and an intriguing act. Almost MGMT like.

#2 The Trees-Barefoot in the Promised Land

I also think I was so drawn to this group because they are so different than any of the other performances all night. They were really entertaining, coming out in some of the most hippie-d out outfits of the night. They stood out. And on top of it one of the singers was a character in Dorm Life, the extremely popular youtube mini-series done by UCLA students a couple years ago.

Anyway, these guys are a really polished sounding folk group that reminded me a ton of folk artists Conor Oberst & Jenny Lewis.

God damn, I love the way I am.

#1 DJ Harper-I Call It Love

I’m definitely not alone in thinking that he was the best act of the night. DJ swept the awards winning top solo act, viewers’ choice and the celebrity judges’ choice. On the other two choices in the top 3, I kinda went out of the norm  with a folk group and an electronic/techno duo, but DJ was just too good. His voice was flawless, his song was really well written and his catchy and cute lyrics appealed to everyone in the audience. He truly won over an entire arena Friday night.

Anyways, DJ is an extremely talented singer-songwriter who clearly has tons of potential. I don’t mean to sound cliche but his music is refreshing and very likeable even at first listen. It’s happy music; music that makes you smile. His voice most reminds me of Howie Day in terms of pure vocals but in terms of the notes he’s hitting, it reminds me a lot of acoustic/pop heartthrob Jason Mraz. The music itself is very Mraz-like, but also triggers memories of Jon Foreman (of Switchfoot)’s upbeat, solo stuff. As you can see, it’s difficult to classify him exactly however you could just say its really good music.

The Standard – Bar Review

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

As the long slew of lame and stressful midterms have finally passed along, I decided it was time for a drink; however, not just another drink at the typical Brew Co, that is conveniently located in Westwood, but I want the real L.A. bar vibe. This, of course, led me to the more so extravagant streets of downtown Los Angeles, embodied with tall buildings and bright lights that illuminated the streets.

First off, there is a wait on Thursdays, indefinitely. I say indefinitely because first off, it’s free that day. second off, it’s free. From word of mouth, it’s usually 10 dollars or more on a Friday night, so now, I can definitely see why it’s so packed on Thursdays.

The bar itself… I would say walking in there, I felt like a million bucks. The bar is located on a top of roof, overseeing the greater parts of downtown Los Angeles. Huge area with leather sofas were all around. In addition, a small dance floor accompanied anyone that had the urge to do the moonwalk. Other components that were there was a pool right near the bar, but no one was in there(probably cause it’s cold)

Drinks… well…I only had one. A Blue Moon beer…THAT WAS EIGHT BUCKS. Now, you know why I can’t really review the drinks.

All in all, if you have the money to buy drinks, this is definitely a good place to go in LA, especially on a Thursday night when it’s free. The vib’es good, location’s good, the women look good, the sofas are good, the drinks are good. It’s all good.

DJ Swagerlicious
