fun

When The Format disbanded back in 2008, teenagers across America were crushed. But a man as talented and filled with ideas as Nate Ruess, ex-lead singer of The Format, couldn’t be out of the limelight for too long. As soon as the band chose to split, Ruess called up touring mates Andrew Dost (ex member of Anathallo) and Jack Antonoff (of Steel Train) to begin a new project. This collaboration of three extremely talented musicians was an endeavor that went beyond any other side project any of them had imagined. While the monotony broke apart high school friends in The Format, Ruess and the gang took a different approach to this new group. And they called themselves “fun.”

After their debut release, Aim & Ignite, made top album lists all over in 2009, fun. has not slowed down in 2010 touring non-stop and writing new music like crazy. The guys have developed one of the most unique pop formulas around combining present day modern rock with the intricacy and downright catchiness of classic 70s pop. This isn’t The Format 2.0; it’s way beyond that. They throw around swing beats, horned sections, gospel choirs and pulsing drums on the regular, essentially making a modernized show tune. In my opinion, it sums it up perfectly to call them a modern-day Queen. With a voice that reminds of Freddie Mercury, I can picture Ruess belting “Fat Bottomed Girls” without any mental reservations. Their music simply takes you on a pop adventure.

This Thursday, October 28th, the guys take their headlining tour through our region for a night of fun. at The Music Box at Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. They are known to put on an incredible performance and countless websites have said their live show will make a run at the top spot on anyone’s “Best Concert Everrr” list. So do yourself a favor and go have some fun this Thursday night.

Steel Train and Jarrod Gorbel open. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com or the Henry Fonda Box Office.

Kanye West’s “Runaway”: A Live-Blog

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Picture 11

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the Voice of Our Generation, you know that in addition to his G.O.O.D. Friday project and his new album that finally has a name (and hilarious album art), Kanye West has been working on a short film called “Runaway”. “Runaway” premiered tonight on MTV and, thanks to the magic of the internet, you can watch it here. What follow are my thoughts as I watched the film for the first time. (Warning: Slightly NSFW language and pictures below the fold) (more…)

Concert Review: Eels at the Music Box (10/12)

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Picture 23

Last Tuesday, I got a call from my friend, John, who is also an intern at Radio. He’s like, “Hey, I can’t find anyone else, want to go to Eels?” I have the most terrible habit of not being able to say no to a free concert, so with two hours until the show started, I rushed through dinner and met up with John to get on the bus. Great decision.

Unsigned Song of the Week – “Just So” by Shout Magic

Friday, October 22nd, 2010
shout magic

If you listened to I’m in a Band.. – The BEST in Unsigned Music on Tuesday, I mean, really listened, all the way until the end, then you heard this indie-trippy track by Shout Magic, a small band out of Philadelphia by way of Portland and/or Amsterdam.

Their origins and/or present condition is a bit confusing.  I think they do a lot of stuff by mail – here, check out this riff, cool, I’m gonna lay something on top of that – sort of thing, which is cool.

But whether it’s cool or not doesn’t really matter. All that matters is if it sounds good.

Well, go to Shout Magic’s Homepage and decide for yourself.

And we’ll see ya Tuesday for more of the BEST in Unsigned Music.

All That Jazz!

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

So it’s a Thursday afternoon, you’re hungry. A pizza could make do, but what you really have a craving for is Heath Ledger’s soulful rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” from the bleachers in 10 Things I Hate About You. You don’t have Heath, but Muse’s version will make due. It sounds like there’s one thing you need…………….All That Jazz!

I mean obviously, listening to this show is best thing you can do on a Thursday between the sweet hours of 12 and 2 P.M. The first hour we have Broadway and theater hits with Little Miss. Every week she covers a new decade and gives fun facts about each musical. The second hour is hosted by me (Melinda), and I play jazz, especially badass covers of old songs and live performances (like Amy Winehouse’s rendition of “Tenderly” at Jools Holland), and some music from upcoming UCLA and local artists as well.

Here’s a little bit of what we’ve played recently on our show: (more…)

And More Handclapping??

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

This week’s handclapping playlist dips a little out of the typical pop-clapping-because-we’re happy material we covered last week. We started with a recap and then delved into the realm of the electro clap-drum machine beat, and much much more…

Breathing New Life Into The Music Video

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

What do Broken Bells and Arcade Fire have in common?  Virtually nothing — outside of some neat music videos that are doing their best to redefine what we thought the medium was possible of translating through the wonders of the internet and technology.

First on deck, Arcade Fire.  Their music video for “We Used to Wait” has gotten a lot of press for its creative use of HTML5 and Google Maps & Street View instead of standard Flash to create a multi-media adventure of a faceless person (which is you) running through the streets of your hometown.  The video ends by providing the viewer the opportunity to write a post-card to your childhood self.  A quick search on Google News about the video actually resulted in a LA Times blog post which explained how this virtually experience translates into real life. If you chose to “send your postcard downtown”, it’s received by a machine that writes your message out on a post-card and spits it out wherever it’s currently installed on the Arcade Fire tour so someone can pick up your message and respond to it – completing this crazy circle.

Similarly, Broken Bell’s video “October” is attempting to break the mold by moving into 3-D.  You don’t need to break out your 3-D glasses quite yet, but you are allowed to fly through space and explore this world of shapes and mountains with the line of your mouse.  Its leaps and bounds more simplistic that “We Used to Wait,” but interesting in its own way for where it could lead.

Check out both videos below and enjoy the beginnings of the reinvention of the music video:

Concert Review: Gogol Bordello on a Wednesday Night (10/13)

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

sasquatch_09_gogol_bordello_pkp_001

So I have to review the Gogol Bordello show at Nokia Live?

To put it simply: One of the best live shows out there, if it’s your cup of tea. And that cup of tea means a cross between punk music, traditional Ukranian music, and Latin and reggae dance beats. What that really means is that it’s the kind of music that you can dance to and mosh to at the same time. At least that was my experience. When I wasn’t dancing, I was moshing, and when I wasn’t moshing…I was trying to get out of the pit because I busted my lip…

Let’s face it, it’s Gogol.
