3 Minutes with Avi Buffalo (11/19)

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Perhaps it’s the hormone-laced chickens or our constant exposure to BPA, but each successive generation breeds even younger (and talented) musicians. Take Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg) or Avi of Avi Buffalo. Just shy of his twentieth birthday, his debut, self-titled album reached a near universal acclaim on Metacritic in addition to an unprecedented 9 out of 10 on Britain’s highly read, NME. Signed to the prolific Subpop, Avi boasts diverse musical influences from the likes early Ariel Pink to Folk and Blues. The latter of which is unsurprising since he used to jam with noted Blues musicians. (more…)

Mixtape review: Machine Gun Kelly’s “Lace Up”

Monday, November 29th, 2010

MGKThe East Coast is on fire right now puttin’ out up-and coming rappers left and right.  From Kid Cudi, to Wiz Khalifa, to Mac Miller, and now Machine Gun Kelly.  All of which have dropped hit after hit.  However, the focus of this blog is going to be on MGK.  Machine Gun Kelly, a native of Cleveland, Ohio just released his newest mixtape “Lace Up” and ever since uploading this mixtape onto my iphone I haven’t been able to turn it off.  This could quite possibly be one of the best mixtapes of  not only the year but one of the best that I have ever heard. Album Review: Nosaj Thing’s “Drift Remixed”

Monday, November 29th, 2010

nosaj thing - drift remixedWriting a review for an electronic album is a pretty difficult feat but add to the fact that it’s Nosaj Thing, one of the Princes of Glitch-Hop then it might sound redundant after the first 5 onomatopoeias.  After a plethora of sold- audiovisual tours and high acclaim from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and The XX, Nosaj Thing’s critically applauded, Drift, gets remixed. Remixes can be snores if not done correctly but in this case, Drift Remixed is a beautifully wrapped package for your ears. (more…)

Student Of Color Conference 2010

On an early Saturday morning, I woke to a 5:00AM alarm clock. I peered out the window and saw darkness with intermittent rain showers. My stomach was filled with excitement because on this day, November 20th, 2010, I was going to be attending the 4th Annual Student of Color Conference (SOCC). This conference, as described on the website, “host[ed] over 1,000 students from the University of California System, and will feature over 60 student-led workshops and caucus spaces for people of color and their allies.” Students from across the UC schools attended the conference from as north as UC Davis to as south as UC San Diego for this momentous event. The UCLA Delegation arrived early morning on Saturday morning to represent and attend the various workshops and caucuses – learning about how the different communities of color struggle on a daily basis. Concert Review: Blonde Redhead @ The Music Box (11/17)

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

This past Wednesday, Nov. 17, the Hollywood Music Box was filled fans waiting to see Blonde Redhead perform. The band played a hour set with mainly songs from their lastest album, Penny Sparkle, which was released on September 13 of this year. Japanese lead singer Kazu Makino channelled into an avant-garde artist by wearing a white plastic mask with long blonde hair coming down from the chin for the first few songs. Makino sang softly, danced gracefully, and added some unexpected touches to the visual aspect. The visual effects of this show were fantastic. The lights on stage frequently changed colors, making the show not just musically appealing but also visually appealing. However, towards the middle of the set, the songs seemed to blend together, and I stopped being able to tell them apart. By the end of the show, the audience appaluded for an encore and the indie rock trio performed one of their recent tracks with as strong electric guitar, a change from their usual soft rock sound.

Breakfast after waking up late always soothes and refreshes the soul. So, you figure going down to iHop or Denny’s gets you by; you’re content with life as you know it.

Well, what if I told you that instead of regular, boring buttermilk pancakes you can have pancakes with crushed up Oreo cookies? Or, instead of boring french toast, you can have two pieces of french toast with delicious Nutella spread in between?

Is your mind blown yet? Stomach growling? Good! Let me introduce you to my new favorite breakfast spot – The Griddle Cafe!
