Mutya Briones is a third year, English Literature major (and Spanish & Portuguese minor) at arguably one of the best institutions within the nation. Yes, UCLA. This up and coming musical artist was gracious enough to grant me an interview and share with me her musical styling and aspirations for the future.

Album Review: Warpaint’s “The Fool”

Friday, November 19th, 2010

WarpaintIf you’re an avid NME reader, a food enthusiast, or anyone who regularly scopes the internet, then I’m sure you’ve heard about Warpaint one way or another. If not, I will gladly try my best to educate you on the worldly virtues of this LA-based, Psychedelic/Shoegaze quartet. Emily Kokal (vocalist/guitar) met Theresa Wayman (vocals/guitar) while singing in choir. After moving to Los Angeles together and cavorting with the Haves i.e. musicians and actors, at that time Warpaint was composed of Theresa, Emily, Jenny Lee Lindberg, and her sister, Shannon Sossamon. At one point, Josh Klinghoffer of Red Hot Chili Peppers was also a member (you can see him with Warpaint in Google images). Now it’s Theresa, Emily, Jenny (bassist/vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums/keyboards).

Unsigned Song of the Week – “AA” by Novelists

Friday, November 19th, 2010

In case you didn’t know, this is a weekly blog post from DJ Octoon of I’m in a Band – the BEST in Unsigned Music

There are a lot of unsigned hip hop artists out there, and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.  Where’s all the good underground hip hop?  I mean the REAL underground stuff.

Well, look no further than Los Angeles’s very own Novelists, a dual-rap/hip hop act with sweet lyrics and dope beats.  (And I don’t say that lightly.)

And not only that, they’re funny.

Actor/comedian Randall Park leads the charge, tossing in a clever joke when he’s not dropping a clever line.  AA is probably one of their least funny songs, but it’s one of their catchiest.  Pick up the whole album – or hear more samples – on the Novelists MySpace Page

Concert Review: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart @ The Echoplex (11/12)

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

TPOBPAHAny band that condones downloading must be worth listening to as in the case of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Lead singer, Kip Berman said, “I download a lot of songs so it’s only fair, right?” Despite being around since 2007, they blew up on the blogosphere in 2009 with the release of Higher Than Stars. I got the chance to catch them at the Echoplex last Friday.

Bruins Celebrating Penalty Kick Win (photo from Daily Bruin)The UCLA women’s soccer team didn’t know what to expect going into round 1 of the NCAA Tournament. Luckily for them, hard work and dedication were ready to pay off. After starting an amazing season and beating some top teams, the Bruins suffered a few crucial losses later on in the season. But after three exceptional games to round out the regular season, the Bruins made the NCAA tournament with the advantage of hosting rounds 1 and 2. And then won them.

Album Review: Above & Beyond’s “Anjunabeats Volume 8″ Compilation

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

anjunabeatsvol8Since 2003, trance all-stars Tony McGuinness, Jono Grant, and Paavo Siljamäki (collectively known as Above & Beyond) have been releasing yearly compilations to showcase the latest and greatest features of the Anjunabeats record label family. Released during July of this year, “Anjunabeats Volume 8″ brilliantly displays the sounds and artists that make Anjunabeats one of the most famous trance and progressive music label imprints to date. The compilation features twenty eight tracks from familiar Anjunabeats contributors such as Daniel Kandi, Super8 & tab, Maor Levi, Adam Nickey, Kyau & Albert, and Nitrous Oxide as well as some newcomers like 7 Skies, Arty, Parker & Hanson, Who.Is, and Juventa. And apart from the excellent selection of brand new music from the artists, Above & Beyond seamlessly blend all the tracks into a two disc continuous mix. (more…)

Rapper’s Delight

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Drake and Weezy f. BabyHip hop is alive and well. Young and talented artists are more prevalent in today’s rap scene than ever before.

On November 9th, Kid Cudi dropped his new album: Man on the Moon, Vol. II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. Personally, I don’t think it’s very good. I only like the bonus track “Maybe.” The other songs are too slow for me, and nothing can compare to the first Man on the Moon. However, the general public disagrees as it’s currently the number one bought album on iTunes. Lil Wayne was released from prison recently, and we all know he’s about to drop some straight fire after being out of the game for almost a year. Having not smoked weed or leaned on cough syrup for over 8 months, his voice is sure to be near Sinatra.

Think of another big name artist, and they have something exciting for you as well. Kanye West is expected to release his new album any week now, and has been leaking a track off it every friday (G.O.O.D. Fridays) for the last couple months. Literally, every artist you can think of appears in this album, and every song I’ve heard is good. Kanye is quite the producer.

J.Cole has a mixtape coming out November 12th, promoting his new album coming towards the end of the year. Drake and Wale make appearances on a few tracks (Drake gets a verse on just about everything hip hop). Wiz Khalifa got arrested recently for possessing marijuana. All that did was make stoners like his music even more, and he’s been leaking tracks right and left.

Most importantly, lesser known artists are also contributing. Mac Miller, Chris Webby, and XV are just a few who have released killer mixtapes. So with all these artists and new music out there, I guarantee all music aficionados can find something they like. Whether you want to do homework, drink, smoke, or work out, hip hop has the music for you. Enjoy.

Win tix to Avi Buffalo or Midnight Juggernauts on Deep Cuts!!

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Every Tuesday from 2 to 4 PM, Deep Cuts provides the UCLARadio airwaves with the best in B-Sides, remixes and covers.  On this Tuesday’s upcoming show, November 16, we’re giving away free tickets to see Avi Buffalo and Midnight Juggernauts.

Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo will be playing the Echoplex this Friday, November 19 with support from The Wildbunch and Lord Huron.  Avi Buffalo’s self titled album was released earlier this year in April on Subpop Records. Although comprised incredibly young musicians, Avi Buffalo’s songs are well composed and well produced. Lead singer Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg’s falsetto vocals are captivating.  Avi Buffalo may very well define a new wave of indie rock.  The show at the Echoplex will be their last show in 2010.

Midnight Juggernauts

If you want to dance the night away, Midnight Juggernauts are the band to see. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Midnight Juggernauts’ electronic rock act will be playing at the Echoplex on Tuesday, November 23rd. The trio’s most recent release is their EP, Surplus Maximus. Here on Deep Cuts, we also love the Midnight Juggernauts because of their amazing remixes.  The Midnight Juggernauts show is almost guaranteed to be a massive dance party. See them play live now– they don’t come to the states all too frequently.

Interested? Intrigued? You know what to do. Listen Tuesday, November 16 from 2-4 PM on UCLARadio.com. Click on the headphones to stream us, and call us in the studio when we ask the trivia questions at (310) 825-9085 to win.

Concert Review: Kraddy @ The Airliner (11/10)

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

photo (1)

The weekly Low End Theory at The Airliner in Lincoln Heights always brings out a chill crowd looking to hear some underground experimental electronic and hip-hop beats.  Some nights are packed with L.A. hipsters attracted by the trendier guest DJs, while others are more comfortably filled with low-pro regulars—it varies by event, ranging from psychedelic crunk  to IDM to dubstep.  The overall aesthetic of the place is raw and grungy, the air heavy with smoke, sweat, and reverberating bass—perfect for resident DJs Daddy Kev, Nobody, and the Gaslamp Killer, as well as past guests Daedelus, Shlohmo, Nosaj Thing, and Flying Lotus, among others.

Last Wednesday’s show was jam-packed with a diverse mix of fans celebrating the release of Kraddy from the Glitch Mob’s latest EP Labyrinth.   (more…)
