Concert Review: Finally Famous Over Everything (Big Sean @ El Rey)

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

big-seanMan talk about a G.O.O.D. Friday in Los Angeles.  Big Sean and company sold out The El Rey a week in advance and literally left the venue up in smoke.  When Big Sean called in for his interview earlier that day during our show, With a Little Help From Our Friends that I co-host with Dj Peetah, Sean told us to expect big things; we clearly underestimated that statement.  The anticipation for the night was high enough with tickets sellin’ for $80+ online but who knew that Big Sean would not only kill it on the mic and light the stage on fire with his own smooth flow but include guest appearances from huge names like Wiz Khalifa, Warren G, Tyga Tyga, and Chris Brown and don’t forget about his boy Sayitainttone, and guest performances from YG and Kevin McCall.

Concert Review: Warpaint @ The Troubadour (12/10)

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

warpaint5webJust as I was wiping the tears off of my almond shaped eyes after being too late in purchasing their Troubadour tickets, I quickly discovered that another date was added to Warpaint’s Troubadour performance in December. Originally intended to be a one-date show on the 12th of December, they hastily added another on the 10th due to the original date’s sold-out status. (more…)

I have and fortunately for me, and the rest of the world, Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra formed an amazing band called Bad Books. If neither one of those names rings a bell then you may be missing out. Don’t fret! You can definitely start listening to them after you read this short blog. (more…)

Melodic Instinct ep.20 (22 Dec 2010) – SoulStace’s Anjunabeats 2010 Compilation (Spoken Version) by SoulStace

It’s been a two years since I’ve been avidly listening to Trance and Progressive House. With more than 500 favorite songs from this year, none have been more influential on my style and taste than the releases from the Anjunabeats record label. The sonic range that the label’s sound innovatively expresses captures moods ranging from the down-est of fast paced club music to the most relaxing down-tempo tunes in which you can close your eyes and enter the dream world. When compared to other EDM record labels, their releases have been the most consistently pleasing by offering something different every time I listened to them on weekly Monday new releases. And I don’t say such things because of the the label’s founding by trance all-stars Above & Beyond but because of the trust I have given to my ears over the last decade of playing and listening to music. In this three hour mix, I have compiled 43 of my favorite tracks from various Anjunabeats singles and EPs of the year into a final 3-hour Melodic Instinct episode for 2010. I hope you find the sounds of Anjunabeats as pleasing to your ears as they were to mine. Enjoy! (more…)

Mark Yudof’s Salary

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

yudolf-with-governatorThere’s a lot of talk about budget cuts to the UC, and UCLA in particular.

To be honest, a lot of it can seem confusing, boring, and hopelessly inevitable.

Yet, as students, we should really pay attention to these things.   And maybe these things can be a bit more exciting if we knew the salaries of the people making the decisions.

I mean, how much DO people paid to cut jobs and increase tuition?   I’m sure they take a pay cut before they’d reduce the hours and salary of a staff member who makes 40K a year, right?

Well, there are a lot of people to name, but let’s start with UC President Mark Yudof.

UC President Mark Yudolf made $828,000 for the 2008-2009 year

Surely that’s made up.  I mean, as a public servant, working for a public university system he would do the job for, I don’t know, under 500K?  Maybe, if he were very generous, very giving, perhaps he could sacrifice and live off the piddly sum of $300,000 a year?

Nope.  According to www.universityofcalifornia.edu he pulls in a sweet $828,000.

Eight-hundred and twenty-eight thousand dollars.  That’s serious money.

Why am I going off on this?  Well, for one, UCLA Radio costs $10,000 a year to run…and we have FUNDRAISERS.  (WTF!?)

Also, when Mark talks about cuts for UC workers, potential tuition hikes, etc, shouldn’t he start with his own office?  Can Mark not live off of 100K a year?

Is $100,000 a year just pathetic, peasant money?

Concert Review: TATW#350 @ the Hollywood Palladium

Monday, January 10th, 2011

niceOn December 10th, Above & Beyond set a new milestone in their career by throwing a live show/broadcast for their 350th episode of Trance Around the World at the Hollywood Palladium. With an all star lineup including other artists such as Boom Jinx, Jaytech, Cosmic Gate, and Super8 & Tab, TATW#350 was the best EDM event I’ve attended over the last two years.
