This Friday, April 29th from 6-7pm the up and coming collective known as Engine Ears will be playing a live performance on The Progressive Seam. Their fresh new sound can hardly be classified by today’s modern standards. On the verge of beginning their first recordings Engine Ears has been playing sets over the past few weekends and building hype for the tsunami they’re about to unleash on the masses. Be sure to check out this performance this Friday and feel free to call in with personal interview questions for the band. What’s happening this Friday? An in-studio performance by The Internship is what’s happening! Listen to UCLAradio.com from 4-6pm on Friday, April 29th (Albums for the Apocalypse with The Eggman and Sara Cook) for their DEBUT radio performance!
Less than a week since their first live show, The Internship has already made a name for itself at UCLA. They’ve performed at the SLAM! benefit concert on the 19th as well as the Treehouse’s open mic on the 23rd – with future dates anticipated. On May 13thyou’ll have a chance to catch them at the Midvale Sessions, but be sure to follow/like them on facebook.com/TheInternship for more updates!
An alternative band with a unique style, The Internship began in the halls of Rieber Terrace after a few jam sessions and some shared musical interests. In the hectic consolidation of school, work, and life, they humbly self-describe as musical interns – striving to make a name while appreciating the ever-enriching opportunities.
The tight cohesion of all instruments can be traced back to obvious chemistry among the musicians. Ranging from floormates to cousins to high school friends, the group of five is equally diverse and cooperative. I’d dub them a “soulful Young the Giant,” but their sound draws from an assortment of tastes and inspiration. Moses Sumney’s vocal confidence leads the music in a strong and jazzy direction, while ska-experienced drummer Julian Palau works from punk rock roots. Matt Mizono, having never performed with a group, seems just as experienced as his cousin and co-guitarist Kyle Kuwatani who shares a similarly indie/alternative taste with bassist Kyle Graycar. Their influences are just as diverse, and references to The Shins, Peter Bjorn & John, and The Dodos are not off-base. The unexpected unity of all styles is something innovative and frankly refreshing amidst the college band scene.
The future of The Internship couldn’t be brighter, with all members eager to write more, play more, and grow in popularity. They hope to stick together for a while and, as talented musicians and friendly people, deserve all the attention they’re sure to be getting.
Voxhaul Broadcast will be stopping by the studio on Friday, April 29th from noon to 2pm before leaving to go on tour with Rooney and Airborne Toxic Event.
After signing with Retone Records early in 2007, Voxhaul decided to take a page from some of their favorite artists and embrace the kinks and mistakes that make live records so great. By harnessing a sound that reflects a range of influences from James Brown and Al Green to The Beatles and Donovan, the group composed tracks with smart lyrics and undeniably catchy beats.
“Fast-rising soul-pop quartet” (LA Times) Voxhaul Broadcastreleased their debut full-length, Timing Is Everything a few weeks ago and have been snowballing ever since. LA Weekly’s Paul Rogers agrees, “Even in an era of overnight sensations, Voxhaul Broadcast’s career trajectory has been astonishing of late.”
Be sure not to miss out on this exciting opportunity to hear a live performance and interview from this up and coming artist!

April 20, 2011 – UCLA Radio got the chance to speak with Shwayze and Cisco Adler before their big 4/20 “Shwayze Solstice” concert celebration at The Roxy Theatre.
The duo are currently working on their new album, slated for a summer release date. Also, they are expected to be going on tour soon so keep your eyes peeled for them in a town near you!
Since their last album, they have been on tour all over the country and even had the time to release a mixtape, called The W’s, meaning weed and women. Fittingly, they made their big return to the Los Angeles music scene this past Wednesday night on their favorite holiday – 4/20.
The show also featured special guests Nikko Gray, Mod Sun and Chris Young the Rapper. When Cisco Adler and The Pigeons took to the stage, they delivered a crowd-pleasing performance, including songs like Body Language and Rollercoaster. But, the crowd really got excited once Shwayze finally came on stage with a shirtless Cisco Adler, even inspiring two adoring female fans to jump on stage, twice, and subsequently get escorted out of the venue. They performed all of their biggest hits, including the ever-popular Buzzin, Corona and Lime and Get U Home! In our interview with them, they even told us that they’d be shooting a crowd video from the night’s show so the energy in the room was even more electric. In the end, the show came to a close at around 1AM, leaving fans satisfied but anticipating the release of some new Shwayze music.

OCHC and CEC present Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein from Portlandia who are coming here to speak at UCLA, Monday 4/25 @ 7:30 PM in De Neve Auditorium! Join us for a humorous, energetic, but casual talk and Q&A session from these two amazing individuals who both write and star in Portlandia. LA Times television critic Robert Lloyd will moderate the Q&A discussion.
Created, written by and starring Fred Armisen (“SNL”) and Carrie Brownstein (vocalist/guitarist of “Sleater-Kinney”), “Portlandia” weaves together short films which portray the progressive personalities, aesthetics, and values of “Portlandia”, the creators’ dreamy and absurd rendering of Portland, Oregon. The series was recently picked up for a second season, which will debut in January 2012. “I’m so excited about working on this,” said Armisen. “It’s a passion project I have been working on with Carrie Brownstein for a while, and I can’t think of a better way to spend my off seasons from SNL.”
You must register in order to attend (link below)! Deadline to register is April 24 at 11:59pm. Registrants must check in at the venue by 7:15 to receive a wristband or forfeit their reservation. It is the true definition of an artist collective that is simply bound together for their love of creating music. Still riding the high of their fourth album release, Forgiveness Rock Record in May 2010, Broken Social Scene made a pit stop in Indio this weekend to rock the Coachella Music Festival, where they performed seven years ago.
Andrew Whiteman, guitarist for the group, joined our very own Alex Pieros and Dylan Robin on CAMPUSound this past Wednesday, April 13th to chat about Andrew’s bandmates, lessons he’s learned working with BSS and the group’s Coachella plans.
