The Internship

What’s happening this Friday?  An in-studio performance by The Internship is what’s happening!  Listen to UCLAradio.com from 4-6pm on Friday, April 29th (Albums for the Apocalypse with The Eggman and Sara Cook) for their DEBUT radio performance!

Less than a week since their first live show, The Internship has already made a name for itself at UCLA.  They’ve performed at the SLAM! benefit concert on the 19th as well as the Treehouse’s open mic on the 23rd – with future dates anticipated.  On May 13th you’ll have a chance to catch them at the Midvale Sessions, but be sure to follow/like them on facebook.com/TheInternship for more updates!

An alternative band with a unique style, The Internship began in the halls of Rieber Terrace after a few jam sessions and some shared musical interests.  In the hectic consolidation of school, work, and life, they humbly self-describe as musical interns – striving to make a name while appreciating the ever-enriching opportunities.

The tight cohesion of all instruments can be traced back to obvious chemistry among the musicians.  Ranging from floormates to cousins to high school friends, the group of five is equally diverse and cooperative.  I’d dub them a “soulful Young the Giant,” but their sound draws from an assortment of tastes and inspiration.  Moses Sumney’s vocal confidence leads the music in a strong and jazzy direction, while ska-experienced drummer Julian Palau works from punk rock roots.  Matt Mizono, having never performed with a group, seems just as experienced as his cousin and co-guitarist Kyle Kuwatani who shares a similarly indie/alternative taste with bassist Kyle Graycar.  Their influences are just as diverse, and references to The Shins, Peter Bjorn & John, and The Dodos are not off-base.  The unexpected unity of all styles is something innovative and frankly refreshing amidst the college band scene.

The future of The Internship couldn’t be brighter, with all members eager to write more, play more, and grow in popularity.  They hope to stick together for a while and, as talented musicians and friendly people, deserve all the attention they’re sure to be getting.
