The Non-Bliss of Ignorance

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Ryan DunnSome say ignorance is bliss, but ignorance can also make you appear prejudiced, uninformed, and just plain stupid. Unfortunately, ignorance can, at times, run rampant in American society, and there are few recent events that illustrate this more clearly than the death of Jackass-star Ryan Dunn.

Jimmer Fredette is a King

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Going into draft night, there was much speculation on what the Sacramento Kings would do with their 7th overall draft pick. Rumors of a possible Tony Parker and Richard Jefferson trade seemed to be a good option, along with drafting college Kemba Walker. Ultimately what occurred was a three team trade between the Kings Bobcats and Bucks which sent Sacramento the 10th pick and SG/SF John Salmons in exchange for PG Beno Udrih and the 7th pick. While Salmons is an upgrade to current SF Francisco Garcia, his contract will be a burden for the Kings in the upcoming years as his level of play declines. The most exciting part of the trade however was the Kings using the number 10 pick to draft Jimmer Ferdette, the point guard from BYU. While Jimmer has the same likely hood of being a bust as being a success, The Kings now have a scoring point guard that will allow Tyreke Evans to play his natural position. While I do believe this trade is a loss for the Kings, I don’t believe it is as bad as people are making it. Sure they could have drafted Brandon Knight with the 7th pick, but this trade was complete long before anyone could predict he would fall that far.

NBA offseason thoughts

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

With the Dallas Mavericks winning the NBA championship, assuming there is no lockout, it is time to look forward to next season. There has been much speculation that NBA stars such as Monta Ellis, Rudy Gay, and Andre Iguadalla will be traded. The teams these players currently play for have specific needs that they feel are large enough to trade these players to fill the role. These team all are either playoff teams looking to get over the hump and become championship contenders, or, in the Warriors case, are looking to make it to the playoffs with new head coach Mark Jackson.

Album Review: Beastie Boys – Hot Sauce Committee Part Two’

Friday, June 17th, 2011

The Beastie Boys are back and better than ever with their 8th album ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.’ With careers spanning over decades the Beastie boys have maintained an image that helped artist like Run DMC boost their popularity in the 80’s by appealing to a white demographic through utilizing a particularly black style of music. Growing up with the lyrical knowledge of such songs as “Brass Monkey,” and “License to Ill” the Beastie boys have definitely been impacting to popular cultural over the last three decades, however, artist rarely attempt to successful reinvent themselves after taking such a long hiatus. The group’s last album in 2004 “To the Five Boroughs,” was not welcomed to much acclaim and fits into the kind of typical response to artist who stray away from the sounds and beats that made them famous by trying to adapt to “modern sounding music.” ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part Two,’ however is a stand out exception that I would credit as the groups “Illest track to date.” Being a devoted life time fan to the group, to say that ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part Two’ is their best album is the sickest to date is saying a lot and deserves explanation.

Beyoncé has already reached the pinnacle of success but with the release of her new video for “Run the World (Girls)”, she has everyone buzzing yet again. An artist that can go from honoring Barbra Streisand at the Kennedy Center Honors event to doing the “wobble dance” with strangers at a block party in New Jersey, Beyoncé can do just about anything her heart desires—after all, she runs the world. Her latest video comes from her upcoming fourth album, aptly titled “4.” Set in the Mojave desert with a post-apocalypse feel, Beyoncé is joined in the music video by an army of female dancers and two male performers. The video starts with African-influenced moves (the shoulder dancing courtesy of Ethiopia and the awesome routine with the two men courtesy of Mozambique), which offers a peek at the commanding choreography that is to come. After scenes of burning cars, Beyoncé holding onto hyenas with leashes (all while wearing a stunning dress from Givenchy’s Spring 2011 couture collection!) and a group intimidated looking men, the video kicks into high gear. The power of womanhood unleashes as legions of ‘girls’ in bright superhero capes take on seductive yet strong choreography. If you didn’t think that girls ran the world, then the choreography (the most intense I’ve seen in a Beyoncé video in a while) seems as if it has the power to change your mind. The fists-in-the-air, high kicks, and the incorporation of military metaphors is fierce as hell and almost overshadows the actual song… and one can say that it looks as if that was almost the intention.

Artist Spotlight: The True Achiever

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Picture 11

Having an indie show and all, I’m a lot more open to singer-songwriters than your average listener. But even I get weary with song upon warbling song of not so discernible melodies and questionable lyrics. So, I’m really glad I found The True Achiever. This reminds me of how good DIY bedroom pop can be.

Adam Cole (The True Achiever) describes his music as “psuedo-literate quasi-self-contained mid-fi apartment folk rock punk pop.”

Get all of The True Achiever’s music for free here: http://thetrueachiever.bandcamp.com

I recommend starting with Super Minor Contribution.

Country Strong

Friday, June 17th, 2011

The tenth season of American Idol is nearing its end, a series that found itself without the captain of its ship—Simon Cowell—for the first time. How did the juggernaut fair? As a proper stan of the show since its second season, I thought the transition was great. Simon went off in a grandiose way (a tear-inducing—at least for me—tribute by a gaggle of past Idol contestants) last year and the show made changes for this current season, some huge (age limit lowered!) and others not so much (Ellen DeGeneres no longer a judge). Randy Jackson became the veteran judge, allowing him to loosen up and in my opinion, joined Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler in their new, ‘bright-eyed’ position. After the changes the show made and months of blood, sweat and tears, America is down to its final two contestants, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery. Two young country singers. And it wasn’t supposed to end like this. Or was it?

Album Review: Wild Beasts – Smother

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

WIGCD267This is the third album to come from the English countryside folk, Wild Beasts, and after the critical acclaim of the 2009 album, Two Dancers, Smother has a lot to live up to. The new album is certainly entitled to equal praise. Each track flows effortlessly from one to the next. The dream-like perfection of the music is immediately evident with the piano in ‘Lion’s Share’, and continues throughout the album, accompanied by the unique vocals of Hayden Thorpe, who provides poetic, heartbreaking lyrics. The lyrics really mean something to the band. The music means even more. The album’s first single, ‘Albatross’ is fantastic, and it will be a sin if ‘Plaything’ is not set to be the next one. Wild Beasts continue to push the boundaries of modern music, and Smother can only be sufficiently described with one word…beautiful.

Top tracks: Lion’s Share, Plaything, Albatross

Album Review: The Sea and Cake – The Moonlight Butterfly

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

The Sea and Cake, a fixture in the indie rock scene in the last couple of decades, released a new mini-album The Moonlight Butterfly (six tracks) on May 10, 2011, their ninth album to date. For some, six tracks may not be enough to convey some sort of message or theme, but for The Sea and Cake, it is difficult to try to hone in on what that message is as it seems to take several detours on its journey to the end, for better or worse.
