“Is you okay? Is you? Good ‘cause I wanted to know…” is the opening catchphrase of YouTube sensation GloZell Green.
But, who is this GloZell?
After watching over 45 videos of this hilarious funnywoman, I decided that I wanted to find out first-hand who this budding A-list comedienne was.
Born GloZell Anita Green, she was born with an unmatched personality and an ability to tell stories that would leave anyone she meets in stitches. She worked as pianist for funerals, weddings, and other special events and found herself always loving the attention that she got when she was performing. One specific performance, she was told by someone, “Girl, you funny”; suggesting that she head to Hollywood where opportunities of her skill would abound. So, she decided to pick up her life and trek over to the Golden State.
When GloZell arrived in Los Angeles – the entertainment capital of the world, she immediately immersed herself in all that the city had to offer. Attending classes at top comedy academy The Groundlings, where many MadTV and SNL alumni studied, for two years as well as developed her stand-up by performing at Hollywood hotspots, including the Laugh Factory and the LA Improv, among many others. She thought that she needed to find another outlet for her to express herself comically and began posting videos on Youtube, with the first few videos being about her everyday life and the people that she encountered. As her videos began to become viral, she took notice of who was watching her videos and began to tailor them to her audiences – creating videos about celebrities, general pop culture, and hilarious music translations.
She bases her comedy off of her own personality, but noted that her influences are very specific including Jerry Seinfield, Ellen DeGeneres, Tracey Ullman, Lucille Ball, Jay Leno, Tom Green, Carol Burnett, and Robin Williams. Each of which, in her opinion, have a unique comedy style all their own and have used it to brand their own type of humor. She mentioned beyond comedians that she looks to people like Perez Hilton (who was “just a guy and a computer – now world fame”), media mogul Oprah Winifrey, top journalist Katie Couric, and Late Night host Jay Leno for serving as individuals who she looks up to for inspiration.
Over the span of several years, she found herself with a newfound fan base whom loved and admired her work – gaining the notoriety of any top music videos with over 12 million hits per video. When asked how she felt with her fame as a Youtube star, she simply said that it was something that had grown accustomed to over time. After her first public recognition at a local Costco where a girl had approached her, she had come to the realization that she was no longer just a “crazy person talking into her camera,” but a legitimized digital media comedienne.
One defining moment for GloZell was being featured on celebrity blogger Perez Hilton’s website three times – each time noting her comedic chops. She felt a sense of validation, which allowed her to continue knocking out videos by the hundreds. Currently, she just completed some work on Lisa Oz and Kim Coles show pilot with her own segment entitled “Woman on the Street.” Additionally, she is in talks to host her own show, which will focus on music and entertainment news.
She left with one thought, which was that “Youtubers should include everyone, don’t hate on any group (Black, Gay, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, etc.).” If you look at any of her videos, you will notice that none of them feature any “cussing”, usage of alcohol or drugs, and never looks to denigrate any group. Our interview was nothing short of incredible because the Youtube star demonstrated a wide array of knowledge of the entertainment industry as well as exuded a sense of confidence and consciousness of the world around her. It was great pleasure that she allowed me to learn so much about her and truly understand why she will be the next top comedy of Hollywood.
