Movie Review: Captain America

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

While he is no Batman or Superman, Captain America is lovable in his own right. The same goes for Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters now! Clean-cut with old-fashion senses, the film makes its way easily into your heart with its cartoonish characters and their sentimental scenes.

Chris Evans plays a comically scrawny Steve Rogers, an altruistic Brooklyn native who, after numerous attempts to be enlisted into the American army, finally earns the opportunity to become a genetically enhanced soldier for WWII in 1942 through the

help of Bavarian scientist Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci). Before his transfiguration, Rogers becomes acquainted with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), a tough-skinned British officer who is easily identified as the protagonist’s love interest, and Col. Chester Phillips, a stony but sarcastic colonel whose ridicules and taunts towards Rogers during his army training provides the film with

most of its comic relief.

Let’s not ignore the other party. Captain America’s bone-chilling nemesis Nazi Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) grows excessively obsessive over world domination and after finding an exceptional source of power. The megalomaniac strays from

Hitler and becomes Red Skull, cultivating his own evil military force with vaporizing weapons and setting out to conquer New York City first. However, Captain America, donned in a theatrical costume, is so self-sacrificing and valiant, it is hard to be afraid of the Red Skull.

With his iconic shield, Steve Rogers ultimately becomes immortalized as the earnest Captain America, a national hero, as he battles opponents and critical movie viewers, winning them over with his quick-wit and patriotism. With tidbits of classic lust

and tragic, “Captain America” serves well as an entertaining action-packed summer flick to share with friends. Overall, I’ll give this movie a B++.

Movie Review: Friends with Benefits

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Friends with Benefits, starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, follows two recently single adults as the try to maintain a physical relationship without emotional attachment.

Even though you can probably predict how the relationship works out, the laughs along the way definitely make it worth watching. Both Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis bring honesty and emotional depth to their characters, providing a context to how they get involved.

Also, they bring a fair amount of partial nudity that I’m sure everyone will appreciate.

The blunt dialogue also makes for a hilarious hour and a half with notable performances by Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson and even Olympic snowboarding star Shaun White!

So if you like foul language, clothing optional activities, 90’s music like Kris Kross and flash mobs in crowded places, this is the movie to see this weekend!! Maybe with a friend, a boyfriend/girlfriend, a husband/wife or someone you want to have benefits with … everyone can enjoy it – except those under 17. Overall – I’ll give this movie an A-.

Check out an extended version of the movie’s trailer below. Follow @FWB or like the movie on Facebook for more info. Friends with Benefits is in theaters this Friday – July 22nd! I definitely recommend you check it out!

Movie Review: Horrible Bosses

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Horrible Bosses stars Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day as three friends at three separate jobs, all hating their

bosses. They develop a scheme to relieve themselves of their awful employer by killing them – with the help from M**er F***er Jones, played by Jamie Foxx. Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell play the awful bosses that ruin lives, in their own special ways.

With an A-list cast, you can expect many great laughs in this twisted comedy/action film with a hint of soft porn thanks to Jennifer Aniston. Although the idea that it’s an “instant classic” as seen in many of the commercials might be a bit of a stretch, it’s definitely perfect for those of you who just want to live vicariously through these guys and kill your bosses …. or something.
