Show Review: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s hitRECord Fall Formal

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011
October 10th, 2011 at the Orpheum Theatre:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt hosted and performed throughout the 2 hour event, displaying his wide array of talents. He hosted with charisma, played the drums, sang and acted in clever vignettes, which begs the question: is there anything this man can’t do? The event was not only a showcase for his talents, though. It highlighted all of the creativity that has come out of his pet project turned production company, hitRECord.org! Artists from across the world descended upon the stage to share with the audience the artistry that can only be shared through the internet.
Each segment was very entertaining and added to the story of hitRECord, but here are some of the highlights:
Cats: At one point, select audience members wearing cat ears were invited on stage so Joseph Gordon-Levitt could declare that, yeah, ok, he has some cats. Out of this slightly awkward proclamation came an entertaining rock performance about cats, crawling and meowing included. A little odd, but very funny.

Death Cab for Cutie

On October 14th, Death Cab for Cutie will be headlining a show at the Fox Theater Pomona.

Death Cab for Cutie is an alternative rock band from Washington. They recently released their seventh studio album, “Codes and Keys” this past May, which has received mixed reviews. “Codes and Keys” has been described as the least “pop” of their albums, and is more experimental while staying very melodic. The first single off the CD, “You are a Tourist” topped the Alternative Songs chart in July. Other fan favorites include “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” “I Will Possess Your Heart,” and “Soul Meets Body.”

The show is shaping up to be very popular, so don’t miss your chance to go! For more information about Death Cab, check out their website at: http://www.deathcabforcutie.com/

Show Preview: St. Vincent at the Music Box

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

6175539457_73bcc9aa6c_mAnnie Clark is the beautiful and undoubtedly talented woman behind the band, St. Vincent. Since performing in Polyphonic Spree and in Sufjan Stevens’ band, Clark has made a name for herself in the independent music world.  Following her successful sophomore album, Actor, her new release, Strange Mercy provides listeners with an intimate and personal insight into Clark’s life.

The stand out factor that separates St. Vincent from other various indie songstresses is her ability to successfully contrast her pretty yet mesmerizing vocals with the instrumentals, which are grungy and harder hitting.  The combination that comes out in St. Vincent’s latest album makes listeners put it on again right after they’ve finished listening to the record.  Clark’s songwriting fits perfectly into this chemistry, and even when the lyrics are simple, like in the opening track “Chloe in the Afternoon”, they work with the rest of the song’s composition.  Clark’s work is not overdone or overly extravagant: it is well balanced, yet not bland. Personally, Strange Mercy has a fair chance of getting into my top albums of 2011.

St. Vincent will be hitting the stage in Los Angeles at the Music Box on October 18.  Clark is sure to put on a show that will only further prove her talent and musical genius. UCLAradio wants nothing more than to send you to the show, so be sure to tune in on Monday for two back-to-back chances to win!

Advanced Screening: Fireflies in the Garden

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

FFITGPosterFinal

A closely observed exploration of the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced with an unexpected tragedy, Fireflies in the Garden marks the feature directorial debut of Dennis Lee from a screenplay he wrote. Lee, a student Academy Award winner for his short film, Jesus Henry Christ, was inspired to write this semi-autobiographical family drama after his mother’s death in 2002.
To an outsider, the Taylors are the very picture of the successful American family: Charles (Willem Dafoe) is a tenured professor on track to become university president, son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a prolific and well-known romance novelist, daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is poised to enter a prestigious law school, and on the day we are introduced to them, matriarch Lisa (Julia Roberts) will graduate from college—decades after leaving to raise her children. But when a serious accident interrupts the celebration, the far more nuanced reality of this Midwestern family’s history and relationships come to light.
