San Francisco based band, Girls, will be playing the Music Box on Tuesday, December 6 and UCLAradio wants to send you to the show! Girls is currently touring for their sophomore album, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, which was released this past September.

I’ve been a fan of Girls for quite some time, and I adored their first album, Album. I still listen to “Lust for Life” almost on a daily basis, and “Laura” was one of my favorite songs last year.  When Father, Son, Holy Ghost came out, I remember listening to it at work with my supervisor, rather confused. None of the songs on the new album were feel-good catchy. I was expecting something completely different than what Chris and JR put on their new album.  Even Broken Dreams Club was a darker, but tracks like “Heartbreaker” and “Alright” had that Album-esque punch to it. Looking back, ”Carolina” probably sounds like it would fit in the most with Father, Son, Holy Ghost. After the initial listen (Interestingly, they did the pre-release stream on hype machine, which I’ve never seen any band do before), I put it aside for a while.

It wasn’t until our old general manager began raving about a non-single track off of the sophomore release, “Alex”, and it was only then that I truly gave Father, Son, Holy Ghost a fair listen and I’ve been hooked on the second album ever since.  It feels more intimate and deeper, and I have to admit that “Alex” remains my favorite track on the album.  Girls has grown musically as a band, and I think it’s towards a good direction.  It may not be exactly what I expect from a Girls, but that’s how bands reinvent themselves, how they keep their listeners engaged.

Plus, Girls is a fantastic band to see live, and they’ll be supported by The Tyde and Melted Toys, both talented bands.
