UCLA Happenings – Week 5

October 31st, 2010

Week 5 has became generally known as the second most hated time for a UCLA student. Midterms Time. The simple mention of the word has been known to cause anxiety, stress, and rare cases…constipation. Needless to say, if you are visiting any campus library or coffee shops this week, you are bound to run into Bruins with their head in the books.

However, luckily to the dedicated student leaders and programmers, this week does not have to be just about cramming for an exam that you may or may not have been going to for the past 5 weeks. Starting off on Tuesday, October 26th, UCLA’s Campus Events Commission (also known as CEC) is having a movie sneak peek of Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis’ Due Date. This film follows two mismatched characters in their quest to reach Downey’s character’s wife before she gives birth to their child. A few reviews have already been released and have been generally positive.

On Wednesday, the fun really begins to hit up and all in time for Halloween Weekend. UCLA’s General Representative 2’s Office is programming “UCLA Halloween,” which is basically a candy giveaway with a sprinkling of some holiday music. On this same day, the Campus MovieFest will go into full effect, brought to you by (once again) the Campus Events Commission (CEC). This film competition allows for students and budding directors to plan, organize, and film a short that will be presented in front of the UCLA community. If the film reaches high remarks, it is put further into a state-wide competition where it will be put up against other schools with the likes of ASU, USC, SFSU, and OSU (to name a few). This competition lasts one week and participants are given equipment to put together a motion picture short. For those who are not interested in getting directorial or comedic, then the Student Welfare Commission (SWC) has something for students in lue of midterms. “Yoga Under The Stars,” as they have aptly named it, is a nocturnal event that will take place on Wednesday at 7pm in the Delta Terrace Grassy Knoll. It is sure to be just what UCLA students need to fight against stress, poor eating habits, and lack of sleep.

On Thursday, the Campus Events Commission (CEC) is having a speaker series event with Dave Eggers. And, after a little research, I found that Eggers is an American writer and publisher – famous for his work on Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and as a founder of 826 Valenica, which is a literacy project. This is taking place at Kaufman Hall at 4pm for those interested.

And, finally, Friday – the day that most students cannot get enough of and, for this weekend only, neither will parents. UCLA’s Parents’ Weekend kicks off on Friday which is supposed to acquaint the parents with the campus and learn about what their students are working on and all of the opportunities that are granted at such prestigious university like UCLA.

Talk about a mouthful of fun activities this week even with midterms overshadowing it.

On another positive note, Halloween Weekend is also here. For some, it will starting on Thursday and for others not until Sunday. But, whatever day(s) that you do celebrate it,  be sure to be safe. And, by be safe, I mean in all meanings. I won’t go into it, but you know. Oh, you know.

Anyways, good luck to all this week and have a Happy and SAFE Halloween.

Cheers!

Malbum artr. Webley has done it again. In case you haven’t caught on to the theme, this is his 5th out of 11 proposed collaborative albums being released on his label Eleven Records. Only 1,111 copies will ever be made. So order now folks because Jason says there are only about a 100 left. He’s also just released the music video for Days With You and made an announcement of his “Eleven Year Anniversary Extravaganza!” being held July 3rd at the Seattle Town Hall. Tickets, of course, are $11. If you can only make one Jason Webley concert, make this one. Most of the artists Jason has worked with over the last eleven years will be present, and I’m betting that even Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls will be there. (If you didn’t know, the two of them have worked together under the name Evelyn Evelyn).

And don’t forget to check out the new album. “Gypsy guitar wizard” Sxip Shirey and the accordion-playing vagabond have come up with some surprisingly beautiful numbers, especially a new rendition of Webley’s Almost Time to Go.

Genre: Folk/Experimental
Released: March, 2009

Awaken A Capella presented their Spring Concert at Northwest Campus Auditorium at 8:30 PM on June 4th. Over 200 people witnessed this end-of-the-year performance, which included amusing skits and creative vocals. After introducing themselves via a witty method entitled “roll call,” Awaken sung twelve songs. Some included Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody,” Michal Jackson’s “Pretty Little Thing,” and Gavin DeGraw’s “Chariot.” Occasionally, the group performed brief skits as segues to their subsequent vocal pieces. The skits illustrated memorable events in Awaken history and comically forecasted the future. Near the end of the night, the group presented flowers and special recognitions to three noteworthy members: Jessica Freedman, Cynthia Wennstrom, and Michelle Surowiec.  The concert concluded as Awaken Alumni joined this year’s group in their singing of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.”

Awaken is the oldest a capella group in Southern California.  The thirteen members have participated in numerous events, including UCLA’s Dance Marathon, Spring Sing, the Los Angeles AIDS Walk, the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, and Fowler Out Loud. Their concerts transpire once a quarter. Of their five released albums, two have won awards from Varsity Vocals' Best of College A Cappella CD series. In 2006, they completed their latest album, “Life's A Beach,” which you can buy through

http://www.awakenacapella.com or from individual members. For anyone seeking to become an Awaken member, auditions are held during Week 1 of Fall Quarter. Outside of weekly rehearsals, the group frequently hangs out and even attends road trips and concerts.  Awaken is composed of diverse majors, from Theater to Engineering to English. For additional information regarding this group, please visit their website or email them at uclawaken@hotmail.com.

[You may have read the announcement here at the Daily Bruin Online]

Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton came to UCLA today with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to announce his official support for her bid. The event was held at the Krieger Child Care Center, a move to emphasize her platform for universal preschool education. It was due to start at 3:30 PM, but flight delays led to the Senator's speaking at 4:40 PM.

There were several media shots of the pair interacting and reading with several children from the Beverly Hills and UCLA communities. I spoke with Matt Malkan, a Physics and Astronomy Professor at UCLA, and his wife, whose children were at the event. They weighed the chances of their children someday telling others that they met a US President.

Approximately 30 dignataries from the LA community were seated in front of the Senator, followed by press and a large crowd (approximately 50) of Bruin Democrats. Bruin Dems President Kyle Kleckner had arranged for the group to attend. The event itself was closed to the public- in fact, security was tight, and from my experience reporting was the most severe of any event I have covered. Secret Service, Bomb Squad, UCPD, and several levels of screening were necessary to get in.

The message of the Mayor was clear- one of support of the Senator. His speech seemed somewhat stifled (see clips) but he emphasized at several points his support for Clinton's policies, as well as his love of his Alma Mater, UCLA. The Senator addressed her key issues for running, which included her universal preschool education platform, more accessible education, cleaned-up streets, and bringing home troops from Iraq.

Mayor Villaraigosa announced also today that he will serve as a chair of Hillary Clinton's campaign. In a press release she commented that Villaraigosa would be vital in "reaching out to a broad range of voters… [in an] effort to change America." The move may be designed to reach out to the diverse Los Angeles Community, especially among Hispanics.

Here is the only uncut audio of this event. Only on UCLAradio.com News.

Reporter Questions, Muffled Near Beginning (Un-miced Questions). As you can hear I yelled to grab that last question… alas, not the day for this reporter:

I interviewed CALPIRG student supporters who stood outside the event since 2:30. I promised an uncut piece, so I included a blooper:

At 7:00 PM on May 27, 500 people gathered at the Freud Playhouse to witness UCLA Thai Smakom’s presentation of the 9th Annual Thai Culture Night called “See Yaek” (Thai for “Intersection”).  The event was aimed at revealing the crossroads between Thai and Thai-American lives, and promoting awareness of the current difficulties in Thailand (especially financial predicaments and the loss of cultural values when following the footsteps of developed foreign nations). These objectives were achieved through drama scenes, each separated by hip hop, martial arts, dances, a game, and a pageant.

The drama followed the experiences of Kaew and Jay as they transition from the high-class society in Thailand to middle-class life in America. Their lives intersect as their identities, morals, and values are questioned.

Overall, despite the $15,000 and extensive time invested into the production, director Nicha Tantipinichiwong declared that she enjoyed every moment of it. Leading actress Proud Usahacharoenporn also commented that her most valuable experience was building strong friendships during the endless practices. The group behind the show, Thai Smakom, is a welcoming community that provides social, cultural, and educational resources to its members, UCLA as a whole and Thai society in both America and Thailand. LACO at UCLA

May 28th, 2007

On Sunday, May 20th, Royce Hall hosted the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO).  They performed a series called “Four Seasons”. This is not to be confused with Vivaldi’s concerto “The Four Seasons”, although one movement of that piece was included in Sunday evening’s concert. The pieces included a world premier of a piece by Wolfgang called “Desert Wind”, Vivaldi’s “Summer” from his aforementioned concerto, Piazzolla’s “Cuatro Estaciones Portenas” (or “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires”), and Haydn’s “Symphony No. 98 in B-Flat Major”.

Founded in 1968, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra promotes the idea that classical music is a joy to be shared by everyone. Ironically enough, the majority of the audience members were senior citizens with only a few young people in the balcony region. The concert was lively.  It was conducted by Jeffrey Kahane with 21-year old Lindsay Deutsch as guest violinist. The LA Chamber Orchestra is a phenomenal group, not to be missed if you ever have the opportunity to enjoy their incredible musicianship.

Thursday, May 17th, was the kickoff of the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology's Spring Festival of World Music and Jazz.  The first performance in the music series was from the Music of India Ensemble.  It was directed by Shujaat Husain Khan and Abhiman Kaushal, two professors of Indian classical music in the Ethnomusicology department.  The ensemble consisted of the professors’ advanced students of sitar (a plucked lute melody instrument) and of tabla (an Indian percussion instrument consisting of two drums).  The show began with a vocal piece and the rest of the performance consisted of musical pieces from the ensemble.  The event was very enjoyable and really had the authentic feel of Indian culture.  For more information on the Spring Festival of World Music and Jazz, please visit http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/.
