UCLAradio.com is a vibrant campus community of music nuts, sports nuts, news nuts, and assorted other nuts. Our nuts have gone onto work at practically every radio station in LA (Fox Sports, KCRW, KROQ, KBIG, KNX, etc. etc.) and various entertainment and media outlets throughout the city and the country. The long and short of it is: if you're looking for a place to jump into the entertainment industry, look no further.
But there's so much more to us than being a training ground for the people who will launch TV networks, supervise film music, and engineer radio stations. We are a community of open-minded, clever, and quick-thinking people dedicated to bringing information, music and joy to our audience and campus in creative ways.
Since you're here, it seems like you'd want to be one of us. Here's what you need to know:
Who can be involved with UCLAradio.com?
We welcome UCLA students (grad, undergrad, and extension), staff, and faculty. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to accomodate people from outside of the campus, but if you want to get involved with radio elsewhere, KCRW, KPCC and KPFK are always in need of volunteers.
How do I get started?
At the beginning of Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters we host an orientation meeting. The meeting will set you on the right course to be involved; after that, we interview all potential newcomers, and usually end up taking about half. If you don't make it the first time, please come back again the next quarter.
Unfortunately, we cannot train new people during the Summer.
How much time does this activity take up?
As an intern, we will ask 3-4 hours per week from you. Over the course of the quarter, you'll also have to pick up 10 staffing points to assure yourself a timeslot. We'll explain how to earn points once you get started.
Is it a big committment? Sort of. Does it pay off? Definitely.
What experience do I need to have coming in?
The most important thing to us is that you are creative, resourceful, interesting, and intelligent. That said, having radio experience is a plus, but not a requirement. If you plan to be a music programmer, you should have an encyclopedic knowledge of music. If you want to be in news, an encyclopedic knowledge of current events; sports, an encyclopedic knowledge of UCLA and professional sports, and so on.
But since we are such a large operation, we need people with skills that aren't necessarily obvious on-air. The station also needs graphic designers, web programmers, recording engineers, marketing experts, and so on. If you have a special skill, we can put you to work, and it will look good when you apply if you mention it.
You didn't answer my question!!
Sry, sry. Email info@UCLAradio.com.

I would like to work at the radio station. I met one DJ; Alex, who gave me a quick rundown. The station looks great. I have a few questions such as the reason UCLA could not get a radio station ( assuming that was the reason why they were kicked off the air for the “pirating” thing.) I am currently interning at CBS Radio (specifically K-EARTH 101 in the promotions department.) I know I could contribute my skills in that area as well as others. Thanks
