UCLA Radio’s live coverage of these events began Monday, April 29. Any perspectives shared below do not reflect the views of ASUCLA Student Media.
Early April 25, students at UCLA set up an encampment in Dickson Plaza to demand that the UC disclose their assets and divest from companies involved in Israel’s war on Gaza. The demonstration escalated in the following days through pro-Israeli counter-protestors instigating violence on Tuesday night (4/30 – 5/1) and police raiding the encampment Wednesday night (5/1-5/2), resulting in numerous injuries and arrests of the encampment inhabitants. As Israel pushes ahead with an operation in Rafah, student protests and strikes continue at UCLA and across the United States. This post seeks to provide the most up-to-date information and developments concerning movements for Palestinian liberation, and will be continually updated.
On May 28, UAW 4811 began their strike at UCLA. After two failed attempts to obtain an injunction from the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB), the UC has secured a temporary restraining order against the strike until June 27. More information about the strike can be found here.

Additionally, it is mentioned that “21CP may need to inform the University if it identifies evidence of a crime, harassment or discrimination that may violate University policy or the law.”
Israel’s War in Gaza
6/7/2024 – 12:37pm – United Nations adds Israel to blacklist of countries committing abuses against children in armed conflict
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed to Israel’s Defense Attache on Friday that Israel will be added to a list of countries blacklisted for committing atrocities against children in an enduring conflict. Despite extensive measures by Israel to avoid placement on the list, the UN has decided to place Tel Aviv on the list – alongside Russia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Syria and Haiti.
The purpose of the blacklist is to highlight parties engaged in abuses against children – but other countries may also use this to restrict arms sales to those on the list. The annual report, authored by Virginia Gamba (UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict) is focused on the year of 2023.
Inclusion on the list is not only damaging to Israel’s reputation, but may also lead to an arms embargo against the nation. This comes as a another blow to the nation, as international condemnation increases for the country’s offensive in Gaza. Recently, Spain has applied to join South Africa in their case at the ICJ, trying Israel for genocide in the region.
The UN is additionally adding the IDF and Hamas to separate blacklist, focused on armed groups that cause harm to children in regions of conflict.

The students and faculty are currently occupying a small stretch of Westwood Boulevard (from Le Conte Avenue to Stein Plaza Driveway), sealed off by caution tape (presumably put up by the protesters, not police).

6/3/2024 – 12:45pm – Demonstration at South Campus [Updated 1:33pm]
The march has paused at the Court of Sciences in South Campus, the side of campus housing most of UCLA’s science and math departments. Notably, a significant proportion of STEM teaching assistants have not joined the rest of UCLA’s graduate workers in striking. Several speakers have now taken the stage, calling to “escalate the strike” for Rafah:
“We know the STEM department is not only complicit, but contributing to the genocide.”
A graduate student of SJP declares, “Universities are not complicit in war, they drive it… Right over there, professors and students develop weapons used for massacres in Palestine.” She condemns an aerospace engineering lab at UCLA, saying, “Their role in the imperial war machine is shameful and deplorable.”
UAW Rank & File representatives condemn the targeting of workers wearing keffiyehs (traditional Middle Eastern headscarves), and begin to distribute their own picket signs, reading: “UAW Rank and File Workers for Palestine.” This move reflects the tension and disagreement between the UAW 4811 leadership and the Rank & File workers.
The crowd continues chanting: “Who is the revolution? We are the revolution!”; “Occupation is a crime; LA out of Palestine!”
A speaker from UCLA’s Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) declares, “I stand before you today, confident that the Zionist narrative is crumbling.”
The crowd marches in the Mathematical Sciences Building/Boelter Hall and through the Engineering IV, V, and IV buildings.

6/3/2024 – 12:00pm – Students walk out of class for Rafah [Updated 12:08pm]
In an action organized by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), students have walked out of class. In response to calls for action escalation as the offensive in Rafah continues, students have headed to Royce Quad to demand that the UC disclose its investments and divest from assets tied to Israel’s war in Gaza. In the first few minutes of the walk-out, around 150 students have already gathered at Royce Quad.
UAW 4811 Strike
6/3/2024 – 1:00pm – UC complaint to PERB fails
The University of California (UC) system has appealed to the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB), upholding their perceived illegality of UAW 4811’s strike across their campuses. PERB ruled today, however, that the UC’s complaint does not meet the legal standard of causing “irreparable harm” in order for PERB to approve an injunction, a court order that would demand an end to the strike.
6/3/2024 – 9:00am – UCSD and UCSB join the strike
Today marks the first day of academic workers striking at UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara. UAW 4811 called its members at these campuses to strike last week, now bringing the total number of campuses on strike to five (UCSC, UCLA, and UC Davis in addition). 6/2/2024 – Framework deal reportedly accepted by Israel
Ophir Falk, an aide to Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel confirmed that the country has accepted the framework of a proposal supported by President Biden. Falk expressed reluctance, stating that “it’s not a good deal” and reaffirmed that Israel will not seek a permanent ceasefire “until all [its] objectives are met.” A ceasefire is still far from secured: far-right ministers in Israel have threatened to topple the governing coalition if the proposal is accepted, and ceasefire negotiations have previously collapsed at this stage. In addition, statements released by Netanyahu’s government have been vague about the proposal. While negotiators deliberate the “details to be worked out,” the war in Gaza and raids in the West Bank continue.
An air strike on Bureij refugee camp killed six women and children, while Israeli forces raided Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Meanwhile, Jabalia and Beit Hanoon of Northern Gaza have been declared “disaster areas” by Palestinian municipal authorities. According to the Emergency Committee for North Gaza, the destroyed infrastructure in the region includes:
- 50,000 housing units
- 35 wells
- Schools and facilities run by UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East)
- Drainage networks
- Roads

5/31/2024 – 2:05pm – Raised hopes of ceasefire in Gaza
Earlier today, President Biden announced that a new Israeli proposal for a ceasefire has been presented to Hamas, saying that it is “a roadmap to an enduring ceasefire and the release of all hostages.”
A Hamas statement says that the group is ready to “engage positively and constructively with any proposal” that would effect a permanent ceasefire. Such a proposal would, according to Hamas, entail the “return of the displaced to their homes throughout Gaza” and “a serious prisoner-exchange deal if the occupation explicitly commits to that.”
The office of Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement soon after President Biden’s speech, affirming that “the war will not end until all of [Israel’s negotiating team’s] goals are achieved, including the return of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas’s military and governmental capabilities.”
5/31/2024 – The aftermath of Israel’s operation in Jabalia refugee camp
The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) said that its troops have ended its operations in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip. Following 20 days of heavy airstrikes, ground attacks, and the destruction of about 1,000 homes, the refugee camp is left in unrecognizable ruins. Vital infrastructure, including two hospitals and a UN clinic, have been forced to cease operations. The Israeli military reportedly found a 10km tunnel network and caches of weapons, but at great civilian cost.

H.R. 8321 – “To require person convicted of unlawful activity on the campus of an institution of higher education beginning on and after October 7, 2023, to provide community service in Gaza.”
Introduced May 8th, 2024 and sponsored by Andrew Ogle (Rep. TN-05), this bill currently has two co-sponsors.
H.R.6054 – “This bill amends the federal criminal code to make it a crime for an individual, while in disguise, to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate a person: (1) who is exercising or enjoying a protected right or privilege, or (2) because the person has exercised a protected right or privilege.”
Introduced in 2018, but never passed, the “Unmasking Antifa” Act was reintroduced on May 6th, 2024 by Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02). This bill also increases penalties for destruction of property while wearing a disguise.
S.4295 – “A bill to establish that institutions of higher education shall be ineligible for funds under the Higher Education Act of 1965 due to campus disorder.”
Introduced on May 9th, 2024 and sponsored by Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, the “Encampments or Endowments” Act currently has no co-sponsors. This bill “prohibit[s] colleges and universities from receiving federal financial assistance if they fail to remove disruptive encampments from their campuses”. In addition to revoking federal funding, this bill would require schools to supply grant-based aid to their students in place of federal aid. Failure to do so would result in massive taxes upon their endowment.
H.R.8322 – “To revoke visas of certain aliens for rioting or unlawful protests, and for other purposes.”
Introduced May 8th, 2024 and sponsored by Andrew Ogle (Rep. TN-05), this bill, which targets the immigration status of student protestors, currently has six co-sponsors.

5/31/2024 – 1:40pm – UC Santa Cruz solidarity encampment swept
Law enforcement, in riot gear, has swept the UCSC encampment. Israel’s War in Gaza
5/29/2024 – 8:45am – Atrocities continue in Rafah, revealing Israel’s long-term military strategy
Following the deadly bombing of a tent encampment Sunday morning and the continued humanitarian crisis in Rafah, the death toll in Gaza has risen to at least 36,096 people, including over 15,000 children. Displaced families in central Rafah have found themselves trapped under the heavy artillery fire in the city, with tent camps north of the city and the southern Philadelphi Corridor becoming the latest targets of the Israeli military.
At a news conference held by the director of the Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) in Deir el-Balah, NGO directors stated that “it is Israel’s goal to starve the population to force them out of the Gaza Strip.” In a crisis exacerbated by the Israeli blocking of humanitarian aid at the Rafah border crossing, the World Food Programme states that 1.1 million are at catastrophic levels of hunger in Palestine, with 800,000 fleeing Rafah in search of food and shelter. UNICEF estimates over 600,000 children to be at risk in Rafah; in a tweet, its director of private fundraising and partnerships said that “the children in Gaza need a ceasefire now to prevent further suffering.”
Omar Ashour, professor of security and military studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera that Israel is using the same strategies to divide Gaza that were used in the occupied West Bank. He believes that the military will occupy the Netzarim Corridor, a separate east-west division, and a 1km buffer zone along the border with Israel. These occupied corridors would allow Israel to continue regular, systematic raids into Gaza at a high civilian cost. Ashour adds that the US is best positioned to prevent this strategy, either by withholding weaponry or delivering “serious condemnation.” Such actions by the American government are unlikely, however.
The Israeli government has continued to expand its buffer zone, or “security belt” around the Gaza Strip (the third corridor cited by Ashour). Analysis by Al Jazeera has shown that the area of the Gaza Strip has shrunk by over 30% due to this expansion combined with the demolition of adjacent neighborhoods. Meanwhile, military activity in the occupied West Bank has continued. Israeli soldiers recently raided a school near the city of Nablus, arresting four students.
Tzachi Hanegbi, Israel’s national security advisor, affirmed intent to continue the war in Gaza to the year’s end, even after the Rafah offensive. He said that Israel expects “another seven months of combat in order to shore up our achievement.” Hanegbi also claimed that the Israeli military currently controls 75% of the Philadelphi Corridor, a strip of land along the border between Gaza and Egypt. Soon after Hanegbi’s remarks, war cabinet minister Gadi Eisenkot vocalized expectations for operations in Gaza to continue past 2024, saying that it would take “three to five years for a significant stabilization” in the Gaza Strip, in addition to “many more” for governmental change.

Israel’s Rafah Offensive
5/28/2024 – 10:56am – Netanyahu calls Gaza civilian deaths a “tragic accident” as Israeli forces advance in Rafah
Israeli forces have advanced into the center of Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, capturing strategic locations like Zoroub Hill and the al-Awda roundabout, gaining control over the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egypt border. The Israeli military continues operations against “terror targets,” three weeks into their ground campaign. Despite heavy bombardment and international condemnation following a deadly airstrike on a camp, Israel denies targeting civilians in al-Mawasi. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the civilian casualties from the airstrike as a “tragic accident” and promised a thorough investigation, calling it an accident despite efforts to avoid harming non-combatants.
UAW 4811 Strike
5/28/2024 – 4:01pm – Rank & File votes on various proposals [Updated 4:29]
Rank & File (R&F) is a group of members within UAW 4811 at UCLA, who believe in a rank and file-led, democratic and transparent union. This subgroup of non-leadership members differs from the official leadership of UAW 4811.
Voting has begun on the next proposal, which looks at giving flyers/handouts to people as they go to work. The general proposal has passed, and now they are working out specific aspects. They have voted against including information about specific individuals and professors, intending to focus the flyers on general information about the strike.
Another vote has been passed, which looks to being disruptive in all pickets/marches if they are low risk.
R&F has now voted against having a rally at LA city hall. They have decided to specifically focus efforts on campus and to push for divestment.
A discussion has been reopened on whether the R&F should work against UAW’s official demands. As of now, UAW does not place emphasis on Palestine in their talking points for legal purposes. R&F is open to expand their demands for disclosure and divestment apart from the official position, to speak out against the genocide. There is dicussion of combining the R&F talking points with the encampment media points.
The final vote has passed, looking to establish R&F talking points and a media guide. The votes are now complete, and now the work for each proposal is being delegated to members of the R&F.
The assembly has concluded as of 4:23pm.
5/28/2024 – 4:05pm – UAW debrief takes place near Kaplan, security spotted taking photos and videos [Updated 4:11]
Security has been spotted taking photos and videos of the UAW debrief, which is currently taking place near Kaplan. For security to take recordings is an Unfair Labour Practice, according to speakers representing the UAW.
A goal of the UAW picket is to talk about how the strike is both legally sanctioned and justified. PERB is the only board to determine the lawfulness of the strike, and they have not released a ruling on this.
5/28/2024 – 3:39pm – Rank & File workers gathered at Royce Quad [Updated 3:53]
R&F workers gather across the UAW picket, in an open assembly for members to propose ideas for maximizing the strike’s impact. There is discussion of moving pickets towards South Campus, as a lower proportion of STEM workers are striking.
R&F is starting the process of voting on proposals. A 5-point voting system is used, where individuals vote on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the most supportive). If any of the individuals vote 1, the proposal goes back to discussion. As there was a vote of 1 for picketing at the Court of Sciences, so the proposal is now brought back to discussion.
In another vote, R&F has voted to picket on Thursday.
5/28/2024 – 3:17pm – A UAW picket is underway at Royce Quad [Updated 3:45]
CSC security spotted on bikes overlooking the scene. Two COVEREDSIX security cars are doing rounds around the northern area of the Sunken Gardens.
5/28/2024 – 12:10pm – Picketers and supporting protesters mobilize to Bruin Plaza for Day 1 Rally
Picketers and supporting protesters are rallying in Bruin Plaza, chanting, “UC hear our call, 4811 will strike you all.”
An introductory speaker addresses the crowd on the Bruin Bear steps: “We will be here throughout finals and graduation to make sure there is no business as usual. UC can be on the right side of history by taking accountability for their actions.”
Ananya Roy, a professor of Urban Planning, is the first official speaker. “We are here because of tireless student organizing, especially SJP; they have always been on the right side of history. We are here at this beautiful and crucial thing that is a labor strike that stands up against student oppression. This is not just a labor strike that stands up against student repression; this is a labor that stands up for students demanding Palestinian liberation. We are here today at our university because there is a genocide underway and we collectively refuse complicity in genocide … Divest, disclose, abolish the police. End the silence. Boycott. Faculty, we have a role to play in this. These conditions imposed upon our students cannot be our working conditions. So I call you to stand in solidarity with this UAW strike … if necessary, to stop work altogether.”
Caroline Luce, a researcher and lecturer in Labor and Employment, is the second speaker. “I am here because our university has failed us … [Gene Block’s] administration allowed the physical and verbal harassment of the Palestinian solidarity encampment to escalate in the worst incidence of violence in our campus’ history. Instead of upholding the UC’s own de-escalation policies, he militarized our campus with armed officers and riot squads … Hands off our students, hands off our campus, and hands off higher education. We are here to make it clear that we will not be pitted against one another – we stand united. We deplore the change [UCLA’s] administration has brought to our community. It has been tremendous to see that some of the most precariously employed faculty are the ones taking action to protect our students, but it is now our turn to protect them.”
Michael Choi, another member of faculty, is third to speak. “On May 1, Chancellor Gene Block allowed law enforcement to make brutal mass arrests of students and faculty. Law enforcement caused piercing wounds by firing rubber bullets, potentially life-threatening actions, in violation of California PR section code 13652, which states that rubber bullets cannot be used merely to disperse a protest … The calamities of April 30 and May 2 at UCLA are the worst crises in US higher education since Kent State in 1970 … It is not a safe working environment when the Chancellor ignores warnings of incipient violence from outsiders and then turns around and orders violence – including rubber bullets – fired illegally at harmless students. This is not just blaming the victim; it is firing on the victim.”
The fourth speakers are from UCLA Jewish faculty and staff, reading their open letter to the UCLA community. Introducing the letter, they said, “One of the things that was brutally painful to see was Gene Block essentially justifying the attacks on the encampment in the name of responding to antisemitism and supposedly addressing this nebulously defined concept of Jewish fear. The presumptions that Block brought to his statements […] presumed a homogeneity amongst Jews that has never existed anywhere and doesn’t exist at UCLA.” An excerpt from their letter said, “A great deal has been said in our name without our consent.” The speakers went on to outline several statements regarding the encampment, including full amnesty for arrested protestors, calling for Gene Block to take accountability for his misplaced blame upon encamped students, the affirmation that critiques of Israel are not inherently antisemitic, and emphasis that Jews who support Palestine must not be devalued.
The fifth speaker, Noura, a graduate student, TA, and member of LA for Palestine, says: “We union workers have the organized power to rewrite the narrative and shift global politics, and we’re here to reaffirm our dedication and make it loud and clear: Palestinian liberation now! The labor movement will not be intimidated into silence. We will not be intimidated into complicity, and when Palestine calls, we stand up.”
The final speaker, Vanessa Muros, an academic researcher of Archeology, says: “The UC has launched an unacceptable campaign of intimidation and retaliation against us. I am ready to stand up and withhold my labor for and beside my fellow academic workers … We demand that [the UC] stop making unilateral changes to working conditions that violate the policies set out in our collective bargaining agreement such as disciplining and suspending academic workers, causing them to lose their employment and be evicted from university housing … All of us must commit to stand up and strike, because when we fight, we win, and when we strike, we win.”
5/28/2024 – 10:18am – Royce Quad picketers break for speakers
A speaker from UAW 4811 addresses the picketers and supporting protesters: “I think our coworkers, myself included, were standing up for Palestine, and how our university responds to that is why we’re here. It’s not just because of unfair labor practice, it’s because it’s disgusting.”
Members from CGP UAW and GSWOC-UAW Local 872 have also voiced their support: “When you’re at the picket line, we’ll be there with you.”
A TA from UCLA’s engineering school speaks: “I will be striking until our unfair labor practices are resolved and we get to sit down with UC and make sure that our demands are heard.”
5/28/2024 – 9:07am – Large group of picketers and protestors gather in Royce Quad, supply tents erected [Updated 10:10am]
A group of over 100 UAW picketers and supporting protesters have gathered, circling in Royce Quad. Two tents have been set up with water, signs, buckets, and other supplies. Chants include: “When workers’ rights are under attack, what do we do?” “Stand up, fight back!” / “Whose university?” “Our university!” / “Get up, get down, LA is a union town!” / “What do we want?” “Justice!” “When do we want it?” “Now!” “And if we don’t get it?” “Shut it down!”
5/28/2024 – 7:52am – 150 protesters picket at entrances across campus in support of UAW strike [Updated 8:58am]
Approximately 150 UCLA protesters, including UAW 4811, SJP, and R&F members are picketing at parking lot and loading bay entrances across campus. Protestors are circling crosswalks shouting: “On strike means shut it down,” “Free Palestine,” “Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest,” “Picket lines mean don’t cross”, “Down with the occupation, up with liberation,” and “We’re gonna rise up till it’s won; when the people rise up, the power comes down.” UCPD and CSC officers are stationed at each picket line.

5/26/2024 – 12:00am – Israel continues Rafah offensive, killing many and injuring others
A continuation of the attacks of Saturday, Israeli forces moved in on camps and areas near the Kuwaiti Hospital. Reports Sunday night additionally state that “Israeli forces bombed a tent camp housing displaced people in a designated safe zone in Rafah, killing 40 Palestinians“.
Spain, Norway, and Ireland will all formally recognize Palestine’s statehood on Tuesday, with Norway’s PM Espen Barth Eide stating “that continuing [the offensive] … in Rafah is in material breach of the decision of the highest court of the world” (The International Court of Justice).
Reporters Without Borders has filed a third complaint with the ICC (International Criminal Court), requesting an investigation into the killing of over 100 journalists by Israel since October.
Demonstrations at UCLA

A supermajority (79%) of UC-AFT Local 1474, a union consisting of thousands of teaching faculty and librarians at the University of California, has voted no confidence in Chancellor Block and his administration. This vote, taken specifically by union members at UCLA, cites the exclusion of lecturers and librarians from UCLA’s faculty senate as well as the violence that has unfolded on campus in the past month.
5/24/2024 – 5:32pm – Student conduct notices sent to arrested protesters
Student demonstrators who have been arrested in the past month have begun to receive student conduct notices from UCLA’s administration. These notices say that students may have violated certain policies and must schedule a meeting with the administration to discuss these possible violations. UCLA will not confer degrees to these students until they deem these discussions to have been resolved.
Israel’s Rafah Offensive
5/24/2024 – ICJ orders Israel to halt Rafah offensive
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to halt its offensive in the southern city of Rafah. The ICJ President, Nawaf Salam, affirmed that “Israel must take effective measures to ensure the unimpeded access to the Gaza Strip of any commission of inquiry, fact-finding mission or investigative body mandated by the competent organs of the UN to investigative allegations of genocide.” This comes just two days after the leaders of Spain, Ireland, and Norway stated they plan to recognize Palestine’s statehood next week, amounting to more pressure and isolation on Israel.

5/22/2024 – 2:00pm – Walkout & Rally
UCLA Divest has organized a walkout and rally in response to Gene Block’s upcoming congressional hearing on anti-Semitism. Flyers handed out at the rally read: “GENE BLOCK TO TESTIFY IN CONGRESS ON “Stopping Antisemitic College Chaos” WHILE FUNDING BOMBS DROPPED ON PALESTINE. Tomorrow, Gene Block will testify in Congress as part of a right-wing led witch hunt on pro-Palestinian protests and protesters, and an attempt to repress the global uprising against the ongoing genocide in Palestine. On day 228 of the horrific US-backed siege on Palestine, we honor the over 40,000 martyrs lost, and remain steadfast that we continue to push our demands for divestment, and further, for the end to the occupation and the genocide now. While Gene Block, Virginia Foxx, Elise Stefanik, Joe Biden, and other enemies of the people claim that the recent violent attacks on UCLA protesters by the Zionist mob and state forces of LAPD, LASD, CHP, and UCPD were in fact ensuring the “safety” of Jewish students and the campus community, we condemn their complicity and active contribution to the genocide in Palestine.”
Flyers with chants such as “Chancellor Block you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide!” and “Over 40,000 dead! UCLA, paint it red! Over 40,000 dead! You’re arresting kids instead!” are also being distributed.
The first speaker at the event, from UC Divest, says they are “United against the flagrant war profiteering of the UC regents.” They state that Congress has asked for all police and university recordings (both video and audio) from April 24 onward, when the Zionist attack was on April 30, “further showing the anti-Semitism approach the university and Congress are planning to take.”
According to a UC Investment member, “If UC regents were to divest, they would have to divert $32 billion.”
The second speaker, from SJP, gives a news update from Palestine, including AP’s live feed being cut and Israel attacking the largest functioning hospital in Gaza four times. “Administration has repeatedly told the community that they are in negotiation with us [SJP]. They are not. Response to resistance is more strong than response to genocide.”
The third speaker, from JVP, states: “We have not felt unsafe on this campus as Jewish students, but as Palestine solidarity encampers. We must continue to organize and take action towards Palestinian freedom. We won’t stop fighting until Palestine and all of us are free.”
The rally is currently mobilizing towards the Court of Sciences.
UCLA Divest will be holding their own People’s Congress next Wednesday, time TBD.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports the death toll has risen to 35,647 people, including 85 deaths over the past 24 hours.
This morning, the Israeli government shut down the live feed of Gaza broadcast by the Associated Press and seized all equipment used to provide audiovisual coverage of the Gaza Strip. Following mounting international pressure, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi reversed the decision and returned the broadcasting equipment to the American news agency.
The International Criminal Court seeks arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders, amidst widespread backlash from the US and Israeli governments. Norway is the first country to state that if an arrest warrant is issued, they will be ready to arrest Netanyahu and Gallant.

Israel’s War on Gaza
5/20/2024 – Palestine News Update – Pressure on Netanyahu mounts as offensives continue
Pressure is mounting on Israeli officials, particularly Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as strikes on Rafah continue and the humanitarian disaster in Gaza escalates. The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC has requested arrest warrants for three Hamas officials and two Israeli officials- Netanyahu and Minister of Defence Gallant- for war crimes and crimes against humanity. This comes after Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s War Cabinet, threatened to quit if the Israeli war plan does not change. Gantz produced a new plan that involves return of hostages, demilitarization of Gaza and an end to Hamas’s rule, and a new international administration of civilian affairs with Palestinian cooperation, among other countries. Demonstrations demanding elections and the removal of Prime Minister Netanyahu have also intensified outside the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem.
Attacks across Gaza have escalated in recent days, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting that over 100 have been killed in the past 24 hours. This brings the total death toll in Gaza to at least 35,562 people, in addition to 505 in the occupied West Bank. After a strike targeting residential buildings in Beit Lahiya, in Northern Gaza, dozens are being treated and pronounced dead at Kamal Adwan Hospital, while detainment of Palestinians continues in occupied East Jerusalem. Casualties have also been reported after Israeli forces opened fire next to a checkpoint on the Netzarim corridor.
Obstacles to humanitarian aid, such as the occupation of the Rafah crossing and extremist settler attacks on aid vehicles, continue to exacerbate such attacks’ overwhelming of Gaza’s health infrastructure. As UNRWA continues to urge the reopening of aid corridors, Doctors Without Borders has reported that the al-Awda Hospital, close to the Jabalia refugee camp, has run out of drinking water.
Without the reopening of these routes, the deprivation of assistance and catastrophic humanitarian conditions will persist.

UAW 4811 Strike Authorization
5/16/2024 – 1:11pm – People’s Assembly for UCLA R&F
A people’s assembly is taking place for UCLA R&F to discuss the UC’s letter regarding the strike: “We should take it seriously but recognize that it’s a scare tactic from the UC. CA labor fed has already sanctioned our strike, meaning millions of workers have backed our strike and means that other workers will respect the picket lines.” Given that the strike is a stand-up model (the UAW will call on individual campuses to strike at strategic times), it appears that UCLA R&F is aiming to get the UAW e-board to call on UCLA to strike as soon as possible.

United Auto Workers Union, which represents approximately 48,000 graduate students workers across all 10 University of California campuses have voted to approve a strike authorization, citing unfair labour practices related to UC’s handling of Pro-Palestine campus protests and investments in War and the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The vote passed with support from approximately 80% of UAW members. It is important to note that this vote does not imply an immediate strike – instead, this vote has given the leadership of UAW the approval to call for a strike at any time.
Strike Demands (Summarized):
- Amnesty for all academic employees, students, student groups, faculty, and staff who face disciplinary action or arrest due to protest.
- Right to free speech and political expression on campus.
- Divestment from UC’s known investments in weapons manufacturers, military contractors, and companies profiting from Israel’s war on Gaza.
- Disclosure of all funding sources and investments, including contracts, grants, gifts, and investments, through a publicly available, publicly accessible, and up-to-date database.
- Empower researchers to opt out from funding sources tied to the military or oppression of Palestinians. The UC must provide centralized transitional funding to workers whose funding is tied to the military or foundations that support Palestinian oppression.
5/15/2024 – 6:33pm – Demonstrators at UCLA continue to march [Updated 6:39pm]
Following the rally at the Tongva Steps, protesters are marching across campus. UCPD, CSC Security, public safety officials, and Apex Security is currently present as demonstrators move through Dickson Court and gather outside the entrance of Royce Hall. CSC security is currently lined up under the arches.
5/15/2024 – 6:25pm – Updates from demonstrations across the UC system
A dispersal order has been issued at the UC Irvine encampment, shortly after demonstrators expanded the Intifada Liberated Zone, taking over the physical sciences lecture hall. As students across the UC system rally in commemoration of Nakba Day, the UAW strike authorization vote results are being announced (see above).
5/15/2024 – 4:30pm – SJP commemorates Nakba Day
SJP has gathered at the base of Tongva Steps to commemorate 76 years of the Palestinian people’s resistance to the ongoing Nakba, demanding for the UC to divest from genocide, and building support for the UAW 4811 Strike Authorization Vote. In an announcement for the event, SJP states: “These 76 years of deliberate killing, displacement, exploitation, and dehumanization at the hands of the settler-colonial Zionist state have led to global resistance to the current genocide of Palestinians. Through its financial and academic investments, the University of California makes us complicit in the last 76 years of the Nakba, in the destruction of Palestinian lives, and in the Zionist occupation of Palestine. The militarized police violence that our university has enacted against students and workers on campus is a microcosm of the State violence that the Zionist entity inflicts on Palestinians.”
The event began with a vigil, followed by a speech: “The Nakba never ended, it is an ongoing genocide that started on May 15th, 1948”. Now, a World Arts and Cultures PhD student teaches an Armenian dance routine in the center of the crowd.

Israel’s War in Gaza
5/14/2024 – 11:25pm – Biden Administration Advances $1 Billion Arms Sale to Israel
President Biden has declared a plan to sell $1 Billion worth of tactical vehicles and ammunition to Israel. Five days ago President Biden threatened to stop supplying Israel with weapons if Israel continued to move forward with a ground offensive into Rafah. Israel has continued with its offensive despite President Biden’s threats.
It is unclear what has lead to this change in US policy. It is also yet to be seen whether the tactical vehicles and ammunition being sold will be used in the Rafah offensive.
UN Agencies report that over 360,000 Palestinians have fled Rafah in the past week- equivalent to approximately 10% of the Los Angeles City Population.

Israel’s War in Gaza
5/13/2024 – 7:52pm – Mass displacement as attacks are renewed in Northern Gaza and Rafah
As the Israeli military fires on shelters run by United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Northern Gaza, the region’s population is becoming increasingly displaced. A resident of Jabalia refugee camp told Al Jazeera “the Israeli military has repeatedly raided [UN-run] schools… and we are showered with missiles and shells.” Continuous raids across the region has forced continual displacement since the war began, but this effect has recently intensified: about 20% of Gaza’s population (over 2 million in total) have been displaced in the past week, according to the UN.
We are living in misery. The situation in northern Gaza is disastrous. We are forced to move from one place to another. We cannot find any shelter or a place to settle in; needless to mention the daily killing, the absence of food, water or medicine. “If our children are not killed under bombardment, they will die of hunger or diseases. We appeal to the whole world to act; to have a ceasefire; to end the war.

5/13/2024 – 9:39am – Demonstrators mobilize to parking structures [Updated 10:00am]
Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UCLA has called for students to mobilize to Parking Structures 2 and 9 on campus. SJP affirms that they “will not allow business as usual after [UCLA] brutalizing our students and being complicit in the Palestinian genocide.” The aim of this action is to disrupt campus operations by not letting cars into the structures and hindering deliveries. CSC security is currently redirecting cars outside Parking Structures 2 and 9. There is no visible police presence at Parking Structure 2, but California Highway Patrol is present at Parking Structure 9. So far, they have not intervened.
Demand to UCLA that we will not allow business as usual after brutalizing our students and being complicit in the Palestinian genocide.

5/13/2024 – 1:30am – Gaza healthcare system on the verge of collapse in next few hours [Updated 1:45am]
The Health Ministry of Gaza has warned that the health system across the strip is at risk of collapse within the next few hours. The potential of healthcare collapse results from a lack of fuel in the region, required to run electricity generators in hospitals and ambulances.
Israeli forces have now ordered for the evacuation of the Kuwaiti Hospital in Rafah. Medical staff have mentioned that an attack on the hospital would lead to the “complete collapse” of the already limited medical system in Rafah.
UNRWA reports that nearly 360,000 Palestinians have evacuated Rafah (a previously designated safe-zone) since Israel issued evacuation orders on May 6.
On May 12, 2024, Egypt declared that it will formally join the case filed by South Africa against Israel at the ICJ. The case is centered around human rights abuses and violations of the Genocide Convention by the state of Israel throughout their offensive in Gaza. Egypt’s move to join the case marks a turning point for the North African nation (which previously wanted to maintain its position as a mediator), as Israel seized the Rafah border crossing. The presence of Israeli tanks on the border is a violation of the Camp David peace accords.
Additionally, Israel has sent military troops and tanks back to Jabalia in Northern Gaza to undertake another ground assault in the region.

5/10/2024 – 2:35pm – Attacks on Rafah continue to intensify amid increasing international concern [Updated 2:45pm]
Israel continues to press forwards with its Rafah offensive, launching strikes on the southern city. One to one and a half million displaced Palestinians (about half of Gaza’s population) are currently sheltering in Rafah, but hundreds of thousands are now fleeing as aid crossings to Rafah remain closed. A Hamas official has condemned Israel for “turning against” the truce proposal that hinged on a sustained ceasefire and guarantees against a ground assault of Rafah. As the international community becomes increasingly concerned about the accelerating humanitarian disaster in Gaza, a UN resolution in favor of Palestinian membership overwhelmingly passed. The US voted no, and has said that it will veto a Palestinian request for full membership in the Security Council.
Despite the US’s opposition to this UN resolution, the rift between the Biden administration and Netanyahu’s government continues to grow. The Biden administration has released a report finding that the Israeli government likely violated international humanitarian law with US weapons in its most significant rebuke of Israel’s assault on Gaza to date. The report cites “reasonable” evidence, and does not express certainty.
Israeli whistleblowers told CNN of atrocities inflicted upon Palestinians at a detention center in the Negev desert. Blindfolded men were forbidden from speaking and forced to sit upright, while guards were told to “to scream uskot” – shut up in Arabic – and told to “pick people out that were problematic and punish them.” According to CNN’s report, “[beatings] were not done to gather intelligence. They were done out of revenge. It was punishment for what they [the Palestinians] did on October 7 and punishment for behavior in the camp.” Read CNN’s full report at this link.
Calls by members of the UN Security Council to investigate the mass graves in Gaza have increased, emphasizing “need for accountability for violations of international law”. Libya has intervened in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the ICJ, citing “the proper construction of the provisions concerning the duty not to commit and to prevent genocide, and the duty to punish genocide.” This follows South Africa asking the ICJ to issue emergency orders for Israel to withdraw from Rafah as attacks on the area intensify and Palestinians face critical shortages. Humanitarian aid (including fuel, food, water, aid workers, and medical equipment) currently cannot enter Gaza due to Israeli occupation of the Rafah border crossing, while fleeing and injured Palestinians are unable to escape.
The Israeli army has also conducted air strikes over Southern Lebanon, saying that they struck “terrorist targets.” Tens of thousands have been displaced in shelling between Hezbollah and the Israeli government. The death toll in Gaza has risen to at least 34,904 people– including over 14,500 children- in addition to nearly five hundred in the occupied West Bank. 12 out of 35 hospitals in Gaza are partially functioning, while 83% of groundwater wells are not operational.

5/9/2024 – 3:40pm – UNRWA temporarily stops operations in East Jerusalem after arson attack
After being set on fire by extremists, the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) has shut down its office in occupied East Jerusalem. As the arson attack was underway, a crowd gathered outside the office, chanting “Burn down the United Nations.” While no casualties were reported, extensive damage was caused to the perimeter of the office, and staff from UNRWA and other UN agencies were inside at the time.
Protests outside this UNRWA office have intensified in the past months following Israeli residents being “called by an elected member of the Jerusalem municipality.” Another protest devolved into violence Tuesday night, when stones were thrown at staff and buildings; the police failed to intervene. Since the arson attack, Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has spoken out against intimidation of UN staff, noting past instances of extremists threatening UN officials with guns.
This is an outrageous development. Once again, the lives of UN staff were at serious risk.

5/9/2024 – 1:21pm: University of Pennsylvania bans Pro-Palestine students from campus
The Vice Provost for University Life Karu Kozuma emailed six Penn students this morning, stating that they had been placed on a mandatory leave of absence. They may not enter academic buildings, be present on campus, or participate in university programming (like classes or graduation events). Usually, a student in this position would be provided the opportunity to be heard in front of the provost before their leave of absence is enforced. These six students were not afforded this opportunity, which is outlined in UPenn’s Charter of University Student Disciplinary System.
5/9/2024 – 12:21pm: University of California, Irvine hands out suspensions to those involved with encampment on campus
Multiple students involved with the UC Irvine Gaza Solidarity Encampment were suspended on Wednesday, May 8 on the basis of multiple conduct violations.
5/9/2024 – 11:30am: Various UCLA departments and union representatives hold a press conference at Charles E. Young Research Library [Updated 3:45pm]
A representative for UC-AFT, the union representing lecturers and librarians on campus, calls for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Gene Block. Various faculty groups have spoken, reiterating statements made online this week. Over 800 UC faculty have signed onto a letter in the past 24 hours, which calls for the following:
- Chancellor Block’s immediate resignation
- The UC Academic Senate and UC-AFT to pursue a vote of no confidence
- The next UCLA Chancellor to uphold the free speech rights of all UCLA faculty and staff
- The university to drop all legal charges and grant amnesty for all students and faculty arrested or involved in peaceful protest
- UCLA to issue a report within 30 days of all university investments, to divest from all weapons manufacturing and militaristic operations, and to hold continual dialogue with student organizers.
As UAW, the union representing graduate student workers, moves towards a strike vote next week, faculty pledge not to perform any struck labor – that is, they will not cross the picket line to fill this labor gap during Spring 2024. Faculty are heading to Murphy Hall to deliver this letter to Chancellor Block.
UCLA Faculty’s “We stand with our students” banner was reportedly found ripped in a trash can on campus, after faculty holding the sign were forcibly removed from the Palestine Solidarity Encampment by police officers last Thursday. The sign was sewn back together by a faculty member.
Rally organizers put together a press kit containing resources, information, contacts, and a press release. The press kit can be found at this link.

5/8/2024 – 5:57pm – Pro-Israel counterprotest at USC
Pro-Israel demonstrators have gathered at USC, following the police sweep of their Palestinian Solidarity Encampment and yesterday’s rally for “USC students, workers, and a free Palestine.” This demonstration was advertised as a thousands-strong “March for Israel,” but the crowd’s turnout currently falls far below this mark.
Israel’s War in Gaza
5/8/2024 – 5:50pm – Afternoon News Update
President Biden says that the US would halt some shipments of military aid to Israel if it carried out a full ground offensive into Rafah. Biden told CNN that “civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of [American] bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers.” Limitations on arms shipments would mark a first for the Biden administration, but would not apply to defensive weapons such as those for its Iron Dome rocket interception system.
As Israel presses forwards with operations in Rafah, tens of thousands of Palestinians are fleeing the area. At least 25 were wounded after an artillery strike hit central Rafah, while raids and arrests by Israeli forces have been reported across the occupied West Bank.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a “removal of all obstacles” blocking humanitarian aid in Gaza, while reaffirming the need for a ceasefire. This comes as the WHO says that there is only enough fuel for three more days of health services in southern Gaza and the UNRWA continues to emphasize the importance of a new crossing into Gaza for fuel and humanitarian supplies. Israel seized the Gazan side of the Rafah border crossing on Tuesday, a vital route for these necessities. This offensive also sealed off a potential refuge for Palestinians as the Rafah ground offensive builds.
Without more aid flowing into Gaza, we cannot sustain our lifesaving support to hospitals… A ceasefire is needed urgently for the sake of humanity.

5/8/2024 – 11:51am – California State University, Sacramento moves to disclose and divest [Updated 12:03pm]
CSU Sacramento has updated university policy to divest from corporations that profit from human rights violation in the below update to its auxiliary organization’s investments:
California State University, Sacramento directs its auxiliaries, including the University Foundation at Sacramento State (UFSS), to investigate socially responsible investment strategies which include not having direct investments in corporations and funds that profit from genocide, ethnic cleansing, and activities that violate fundamental human rights… the University further directs the Finance Committee of UFSS and other auxiliaries to ensure that the University’s investment portfolios remain free of such direct investments.
A presidential memorandum was also issued, affirming that “CSU Sacramento opposes and condemns all acts of genocide, ethnic cleansing, terrorism and other activities that violate fundamental human rights. Student protests and political action are cornerstones of higher education and democracy, and we unequivocally condemn hate and bias in all forms.” No policy updates or memoranda explicitly mention Israel or Palestine.
Direct campus investments have been disclosed online and Sacramento State President Wood has announced that all protesting students will be provided amnesty.
Sacramento State says that they currently have no direct investments in areas targeted by this policy update. Student organizers for SJP are currently speaking on campus.

5/7/2024 – 1:01pm – Israeli forces seize control of Rafah Crossing
Early Tuesday, Israeli ground troops seized control of Gaza’s Rafah border crossing with Egypt, completely shutting off a vital entry point for humanitarian aid into the besieged Palestine. The ground incursion has been described as a “very limited operation,” as fear mounts of a full-scale invasion into the southern Palestinian city. As pictured in a Wall Street Journal news video, bulldozers can be seen plowing through Gaza buildings and landmarks, adding to the already-escalated violence shown by the Israeli military.

5/7/2024 – 10:51pm – UCLA USAC passes resolution calling for divestment and amnesty
The Undergraduate Students Association has passed a resolution calling for the immediate resignation of Chancellor Block if he does not meet the below demands:
- Meet the divestment demands of the Palestine Solidarity Encampment (PSE)
- Grant amnesty to affected students
- Waive medical bills of those hospitalized
This resolution was sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Commissioner and co-sponsored by General Representative III and the International Student Representative. The resolution decries the violence inflicted upon those in the PSE as “the culmination of UCLA administration’s refusal to address the ongoing genocide in Palestine and the repression of pro-Palestine voices on campus for the past seven months,” and denounced the administration of Chancellor Block for constructing “false narratives designed to place blame on non-violent demonstrators” for years.
5/7/2024 – 6:44pm – USC rally: “Fight for USC students, workers, and a free Palestine” [Updated 8:41]
The USC-UAW coalition is holding a rally at the Jefferson Entrance of USC “for students, workers and a free Palestine.” They are demanding “full amnesty to all who participate in their protected right to free speech and peaceful protest, for administration to stop militarizing our campus, and for our university to divest from apartheid.” Estimated headcount now at over 200.
There appears to be heavy involvement from the Party for Socialism and Liberation, whose large banner reads: “Los Angeles stands with Palestine / End all U.S. aid to apartheid Israel.” Various chants from participants include: “USC you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide,” “Hold the line,” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free / From the sea to the river / Palestine will live forever,” “If we don’t get no justice / you don’t get no peace.”
Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, leads songs including “Worldwide Rebel Songs” by Nightwatchman, “This Land Is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie, and “Killing in the Name” by Rage Against The Machine.
A speaker from the UAW chapter (representing USC graduate workers) addresses the crowd. A USC law professor speaks after him, decrying the “increasingly militarized presence on campus making it incredibly unsafe for everybody here.” “Did we authorize the militarization of our campus? (The crowd shouts, “No!”) Why did you unleash violence workers on the Trojan family … that’s how you treat your family members? There’s been an unbroken precedent … we’ve never had a valedictorian not deliver the valedictorian address. Now you’re going to lecture us on following the rules when you can’t follow your own rules? Anti-genocide is not antisemitism. When was it about safety here? Never.” They mention the BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) history in South Africa, asking, “When in the history of this country have [the students] not been vindicated? When have they not been proven right?”
A worker from the National Union of Healthcare is now speaking: “As we know, USC has a long history of trying to silence dissent … we are closer than we have ever been… we have international friends, we have international family. We stand with the healthcare workers of Palestine who are putting their lives at risk daily.”
A USC parent and PSL member speaks next: “The police have no business in the university. Over here they are violating the law and nobody says anything. Who is going to speak up against? You guys – the students. And we, the parents, are going to support you. The Zionists want to wipe out all the knowledge all the culture, from Palestine. Are we going to let that happen? No! When I say the US government is a terrorist state, I’m saying that because it’s the truth. The lives of almost 20,000 kids are not coming back … you have to have empathy, you have to have heart … we are humans, and what we have to do is spread humanity. Viva Palestina por siempre… tenemos que estar hermanos contra el genocidio. [Long live Palestine forever… we have to be brothers against genocide.]”
Participants chant, “From Palestine to the Philippines, stop the US war machine / from Palestine to Mexico, all these walls have got to go.”
The rally’s organizer closes the event: “I think we showed USC we’re not going anywhere. You can tear down the encampment, you can throw away tents, which given the crisis of the unhoused population, you could’ve at least donated the tents. You can try to silence us but we will not be silenced. You try to intimidate us by arresting our comrades, by suspending students, but we’re not going to let that stop us, are we? We demand that USC drop these unjust charges – no academic sanctions for speaking your mind, for standing up against genocide. We demand the university commit to never bringing LAPD onto our campus and we demand that USC disclose its investments in this infernal war and then f-cking divest. But that is not the end of our struggle: USC is our battle in our community, but this is so much bigger. We are not stopping until there is a free Palestine.”
When in the history of this country have [the students] not been vindicated? When have they not been proven right?

5/7/2024 – 2:58pm – 13 federal judges boycott Columbia Law
An announcement on Monday (read here) from 13 federal judges states that they will boycott Columbia Law students if their demands are not met, calling the university out as an “incubator of bigotry”. Their primary demand is “Serious consequences for students and faculty who have participated in campus disruptions,” referring to the Pro-Palestinian encampment, as well as protests related to the issue. However, in response to this letter, the current Law Dean Gillian Lester affirms how students of Columbia Law are “consistently sought out by leading employers in the private and public sectors, including the judiciary“.
5/7/2024 – 2:58pm – UCLA has “connected with the FBI about possible assistance”
According to current UCLA Chancellor Gene Block, UCPD is now working with the LAPD to find and prosecute the counter-protesters behind the violence of April 30th. In an emailed announcement to the UCLA community, he asks “anyone who saw the violence firsthand or who has information about the attack to report it as soon as possible”. In addition, the severity of the situation signals a possible involvement of the FBI in the search for these violent offenders.

5/7/2024 – 1:37pm – Police remove encampment at University of Chicago
For a university that has long prided itself as a model of free expression, the accredited Chicago university sent police officers early Tuesday to remove the students’ Pro-Palestinian encampment. 5/6/2024 – 6:43pm – Israel rejects ceasefire proposal, Rafah offensive begins [Updated 11:11pm]
Israel has rejected the proposal which had been accepted by Hamas, which would’ve led to a 40-day sustained ceasefire and release of hostages. Pressure in Tel Aviv has been mounting as protesters continue to protest for immediate release of hostages, but the Israeli government seems intent on pressing ahead with a ground offensive into Rafah.
The Israeli military said that it has achieved “operational control” over the Rafah crossing along the border with Egypt; this assertion been corroborated by a Hamas spokesperson. An anonymous military official said that three tunnel shafts in the area had been found, and about 20 were killed in this operation. Special forces are scanning the area and a tank brigade has been reported at the crossing.
5/6/2024 – Israeli military orders evacuation of Eastern Rafah
Israel says that it plans to launch an offensive on eastern Rafah and has ordered evacuation of the area. About 1.5 million Palestinians are currently sheltering in Rafah, and an offensive would further exacerbate the humanitarian disaster brought by Israel’s assault on Gaza. The military dropped flyers ordering immediate evacuation to the “humanitarian zone” al-Mawasi, and has already carried out airstrikes on neighborhoods earlier today. A spokesperson for the Israeli military has said that about 100,000 are being evacuated from eastern Rafah, but a UNWRA spokesperson has told Al Jazeera that this order caused a ripple effect of fear across the city.
Despite Hamas agreeing to a temporary ceasefire proposal, Israel’s War Cabinet has unanimously decided to continue the operation in Rafah. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has stated that “Israel will send a delegation of working-class mediators to exhaust the possibility of reaching an agreement under conditions acceptable to Israel.” This comes as protests continue to mount in Israel demanding immediate return of hostages, which would be included in this ceasefire deal.

5/6/2024 – 5:29pm – Jail support remains around Van Nuys Release Center [Updated 5:37pm]
Around 80-100 people are still stationed outside of the Van Nuys police station for jail support. So far, six or seven individuals have been released, but the majority is still being detained. People are being released in groups of three, received by cheers from the crowd. Some legal observers who were arrested this morning are still detained. Tents at jail support include a charging station, medics, a mental health tent, and food.
Some student demonstrators were reportedly arrested for the second time this morning (having been arrested when the encampment was swept). The LA County Public Defender tent is stationed outside for the “Record Clearing Project.” They intend to clear student records as done last week following the sweeping of the encampment. Students are holding blankets to provide privacy to those going to the public defender tent.

5/6/2024 – 1:54pm – UCLA Palestine Solidarity Encampment (PSE) releases statement on Parking Structure 2 Arrests
The UCLA PSE states in a new press release that over 45 students and community members were arrested by the LAPD and LA Sheriff’s Department. In the statement, they detail the unlawful nature of the arrests, police mistreatment of the arrested, and the censoring of legal observers and local media from entry, linking video proof . They call for the immediate release and dropping of charges for everyone detained this morning.
“We call on the UCLA community and the public to monitor and oppose the increasingly repressive fascist tactics being deployed by our administration, the UC Regents, and the Biden Administration.
No one is free until Palestine is free.”

At odds with protestor’s demands to end policing on campus, UCLA has created a new Office of Campus Security and an additional Associate Vice Chancellorship. Rick Braziel, former Sacramento Chief of Police, has been tapped for this position, which will oversee the Police Department and Office of Emergency Management. This position will supersede the Chief of Police, John Thomas, who said he did “everything he could” to keep students safe during last week’s violent attacks.

Israel’s War in Gaza
5/5/2024 – 11:00am – Al Jazeera offices in Israel shut down
The Israeli Cabinet unanimously voted to shut down the offices of Al Jazeera, one of the only foreign sources of news on the ground in Gaza. Israel has also moved to prevent transmission of Al Jazeera broadcasts, blocked the service’s websites, and has withdrawn crew accreditations. Some lawmakers have accused Al Jazeera of being a “mouthpiece of Hamas,” and officials claimed the media organization to be a threat to national security. Al Jazeera has vehemently denied such claims; in a statement, Al Jazeera wrote:
“Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemns and denounces this criminal act that violates human rights and the basic right of access of information. Al Jazeera affirms its right to continue to provide news and information to its global audience.”
“Al Jazeera urges all media freedom, human rights, and other concerned organisations, to condemn the repeated attacks on journalists and the press by Israel, and to hold those responsible to account… ‘Targeting journalists is a crime.’“
The Foreign Press Association, an NGO operating in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank on behalf of international journalists, has decried this action, saying that Israel has joined a “dubious club of authoritarian governments.”

5/4/2024 – 8:15pm – USC Student Affairs delivers message to encampment [Updated 8:21pm]
USC’s Student Affairs office has delivered a message to the campus’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment, demanding that they take down their encampment. Nancy Alonzo, assistant director of the USC Village Residential Colleges, read the following letter:
“The encampment has to go down, as we have mentioned before, your encampment and acts of vandalism and the theft of university property violated policies and the law. These policies actually exist to protect the safety and security of every member of our community and we must enforce these policies consistently as we have always done. And then we also set up an alternative free speech area that’s available to you all and you can move the encampment there.”
The encampment is currently situated in Alumni Park at the heart of USC’s campus. Organizers believe a sweep by law enforcement is coming tonight, despite no deadline being provided by Alonzo.
5/4/2024 – 7:22pm – UCLA staff and faculty protest outside the Hammer Museum
Outside the annual Gala in the Garden at the Hammer Museum, UCLA staff and faculty are protesting the university’s response to the encampment. They are demanding the resignation of Chancellor Gene Block, disclosure of assets, divestment from firms with ties to Israel, and amnesty for the demonstrating students.
May 2 Alumni Town Hall with Chancellor Block
At 4pm on May 2, Chancellor Block held an alumni Town Hall live on Zoom. Reporters for UCLA Radio attempted to enter the Zoom meeting, but due to a capacity of 1000 attendees, were unable to join. We are now sharing coverage from a source who attended the Town Hall.
The Zoom chat was disabled, and attendees were directed to send questions to an external email. Chancellor Block cited safety reasons for sweeping the encampment, namely fire regulations and the continued threat of violent counter-protesters. Block did not elaborate too much on negotiations with the encampment’s organizers, but did state that UCLA is going to limit public access and increase police presence on campus.
Disciplinary responses to organizing students will proceed on a case-by-case basis, but Block suggested that any students who resisted arrest or caused property damage would face more serious consequences. He did not elaborate on what will happen to faculty members who were arrested.
UCLA is planning to introduce more Fiat Lux courses, one-unit seminar classes that discuss specific issues, targeted towards the topic of student protest. Block says that instances of antisemitism and Islamophobia are currently being investigated, but responded with exasperation to questions about the students’ demands, saying that he personally did not have the power to meet these demands.
The issue of classroom access was also discussed. Chancellor Block has previously focused on denied access to buildings as rationale for casting the encampment as a protest that “harms [UCLA’s] ability to carry out [its] academic mission,” but conceded that alternative entrances were available. Throughout the meeting, Block said that there was no way to negotiate with the protesting students. Critics of Chancellor Block have brought up UC Riverside’s deal with their student encampment; Riverside will take steps towards full disclosure of assets and “explore the removal” of its endowment from the UC’s investment office.
Israel’s War in Gaza
5/4/2024 – 7:45pm: Continuing Ceasefire Negotiations
Despite hopes rising for a ceasefire as a Hamas delegation met with mediators earlier today, these are dwindling as the day’s negotiations have come to an end. Osama Hamdan, a Hamas spokesperson, says that any agreement to a ceasefire will hinge on a guarantee from the US that Israel will not initiate a ground attack on Rafah. This comes as Israeli officials continue to reaffirm their commitment to a ground assault on Rafah, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Such an attack could be imminent if ceasefire talks collapse. Artillery attacks continue in the area, including one that wounded at least three Palestinians about two hours prior to this update.
Earlier in Tel Aviv, thousands have protested Netanyahu’s lack of commitment to a ceasefire deal with Hamas. This protest has similarly hinged on the assault on Rafah, which is currently the largest obstacle to such a deal. The one currently being discussed in Cairo would see a 40-day sustained ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages.
5/4/2024 – 3:30pm: Afternoon News Coverage
In Cairo, delegations are taking place between Hamas officials and Egyptian & U.S. mediators to discuss a permanent ceasefire deal in Gaza. However, despite Egyptian state media reporting “noticeable progress”, it is noted that Israel has not sent a delegation to the truce talks. Additionally, a senior Israeli official downplayed prospects for a full end to the war while emphasizing the commitment to invading Rafah.
Hamas’ political bureau member Husam Badran added that Hamas requested that the deal be guaranteed by Turkey and Russia, in light of mistrust in the U.S. government.
The UN World Food Programme says that Northern Gaza is now experiencing a “full-blown famine” as the Israeli government continues to place heavy restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the region.
An updated toll of devastation in the previous 24 hours has not been provided as of yet.

Israel’s War in Gaza
5/3/2024 – 2:00 pm: Afternoon News Coverage
In the last 24 hours, 26 Palestinians have been killed and 51 wounded in the Gaza Strip according to the Palestinian Health Ministry – bringing the total death toll to 34,622 and injuries to 77,867 since the war began in October.
A prominent surgeon from Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City has died in an Israeli prison. Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh was held by the Israeli Defense Forces for over four months, alongside 10 other medical workers who had been arrested. There are claims that Dr. Al-Bush had been tortured by the Israeli military in his time at the prison – testimony from dozens of Palestinians who have been released by Israel in past months has alleged the widespread use of physical and psychological abuse of those detained by Israel during the war in Gaza.
Turkey has halted trade with Israel, worth $7 billion, until a permanent ceasefire is reached and humanitarian aid is secured in Gaza. Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat has cited Israel’s “uncompromising attitude” and a worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza as the reason for the halt in imports and exports. This marks Ankara’s strongest step, following months of sharp criticism of the Israeli military’s treatment of Palestinians in Gaza.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) demands for an end to intimidation of its staff. This appeal comes from the prosecutor’s office at the ICC, where Prosecutor Karim Khan states “Independence and impartiality is undermined, however, when individuals threaten to retaliate against the Court or against Court personnel should the Office, in fulfillment of its mandate, make decisions about investigations or cases falling within its jurisdiction”. This comes following a week of media reports that the ICC may issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including PM Netanyahu, over the country’s conduct in Gaza.

5/2/2024 – 7:47pm – A non-student being interviewed states: “We as Jews have had to struggle with being persecuted and nearly wiped out – but did we go around causing destruction?”
The man continues: “I think a lot of people don’t have a lot going on in their lives so they don’t know what to do with their time and so they think it’s a good way to get attention … and say inflammatory statements. like calling for a globalized intifada.”
5/2/2024 – 7:39pm – Counter-protesters begin interrupting an interview with a man with a Palestinian flag at the Sunken Gardens. [Updated 7:45pm]

A man with a Palestinian flag is chanting “From the river to the sea,” and pro-Israel protesters are chanting and shuckling (a swaying movement associated with Jewish prayer) in response. Apex Security Group is exiting campus.
5/2/2024 – 6:29pm – Counter-protesters increase in number [Updated 6:53pm]

More counter-protesters are blowing a shofar horn and waving Israeli flags.
Israel’s War in Gaza
5/2/2024 – 5:00 pm: Afternoon News Coverage
Amidst Israel-Hamas negotiations for a cease-fire and release of hostages, Ismail Haniyeh, chairman of Hamas’s political bureau, is reported to have a “positive spirit” about a cease-fire deal, and the group is quickly proceeding negotiations in Egypt on the topic. Compromises are reportedly being made on both sides, while U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urges that now is the time for Hamas to act. Though just days ago Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu committed to “total victory” over Hamas, which would include a ground invasion of Rafah despite how cease-fire talks proceed, Israeli officials are now considering a plan from Egyptian mediators that could weaken or entirely prevent the Rafah offensive.
While Canadian college students begin forming their own encampments in protest of Israel’s violence in Gaza, President Joe Biden makes a statement on the widespread protests among American universities. He upholds the students’ rights to protest, but adds that “dissent must never lead to disorder.” When confronted about whether the demonstrations would impact his administration’s ongoing support for Israel, Biden “responded with a simple ‘no.’”
According to Al Jazeera, “Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have killed 28 people and wounded 51 injured in the latest 24-hour reporting period.”

Limited programming will be available today at uclaradio.com
5/2/2024 – 1:48pm – Message sent from the office of Chancellor Gene Block; confirms over 200 arrested
A campuswide email has been sent by Chancellor Block, claiming that UCLA “allowed [the encampment] to remain in place so long as it did not jeopardize Bruins’ safety.” This email confirms that over 200 were arrested at the scene last night.
The email states that UCLA will “continue to investigate the violent incidents of… especially Tuesday night’s horrific attack.” It claims that “leadership immediately directed our UCPD police chief to call for the support of outside law enforcement, medical teams and the fire department.” Law enforcement only began to corral counter-protesters about four hours after they started attempting to breach the encampment.

Students are not allowed to retrieve their belongings. Shaw Management Security (a private security company) prevents students from entering but allows a pro-Israel counter-protester inside to “take down the screen,” who then begins interviewing within the encampment. A pro-Israeli student on site is the only student to our knowledge being allowed to enter the encampment area and engage with press there. The said pro-Israeli student is publicly provoking and engaging in inflammatory interactions with media and using antagonistic language towards protestors.

Israel’s War in Gaza:
5/1/2024 – 9:35am: Morning News Coverage
This update seeks to inform students about Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. We urge students to continue to engage in this issue, and stay safe as counter-protesters continue to threaten violence.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told US Secretary of State Blinken that he will not accept a deal that would end the war in Gaza. Hamas will reportedly respond to the deal, which would entail a 40-day ceasefire in return for release of captives, within the next day or two. According to a senior Hamas official, Al-Hindi, doubt of a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza is a major obstacle to the deal going forward.
Jordan’s Petra News Agency reports an attack on an aid convoy by Israeli settlers. Four men have reportedly been arrested for blocking humanitarian aid, but it is unclear if these are the same as those reported by the Petra News Agency. The number of land trucks that have entered Gaza with aid now stands at 1,242, while UN officials and the US continue to urge Israel to take steps to ensure adequate humanitarian relief and aid worker safety. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to “an end to occupation” and a two-state solution. In this statement, he called for “a fully independent, democratic, viable, contiguous & sovereign Palestinian State, with Gaza as an integral part.”
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has said that Gaza is filled with more debris than Ukraine, despite Gaza’s frontline only being about 4.2% the length of Ukraine’s. Gaza currently has 300 kilograms of debris per square meter, and UNMAS says that clearing this debris is unusually dangerous due to the quantity of asbestos and unexploded munitions buried under the rubble.
Palestinian human rights groups have confirmed that 1,000 Gaza workers who were in Israel on October 7 are missing. Israel has not disclosed any information about their health or whereabouts. This confirmation comes as the death toll in Gaza has risen to 35,060 Palestinians, while at least 492 have been killed in the occupied West Bank.

Israel’s War in Gaza:
4/30/2024 – 9:15pm: Evening News Coverage
Israeli negotiators are reportedly meeting mediators in Cairo amid talks for a 40-day ceasefire in exchange for release of captives. Hopes for a ceasefire have become more desperate as the Israeli military is continually poised to assault the southern city of Rafah, a ground operation that is “immediately on the horizon,” according to UN relief chief Martin Griffiths. Griffiths also warns that such a ground assault would “strike a disastrous blow” and “spell even more trauma and death.”
An air attack in the center of Gaza City has killed and injured several, with the search for bodies ongoing, according to the Wafa news agency. A raid on Fawwar refugee camp by Israeli forces, in the occupied West Bank, has resulted in the arrest of three Palestinians. They have also stormed other cities and camps across the West Bank, including the Dheisheh camp in Bethlehem.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that the military offensive in Rafah will go forward “with or without a deal, to achieve total victory”. He has expressed that Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) plan to conduct their ground offensive, regardless of whether a truce-for-hostages deal is struck.
The US state department has found five units of the Israeli military responsible for human rights violations in individual incidents, but says they will continue to receive US military backing. These incidents took place outside of Gaza before the current war. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel has stated “Four of these units have effectively remediated these violations, which is what we expect partners to do. For a remaining unit, we continue to be in consultations and engagements with the government of Israel; they have submitted additional information as it pertains to that unit”.
Additionally, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an independent investigation into the mass graves recently uncovered by Palestinian authorities in Gaza. “It is imperative that independent international investigators with forensic expertise are allowed the immediate access to the sites of these mass graves to establish the precise circumstances under which the Palestinians lost their lives and were buried or reburied” says Guterres.
Civilians must be protected, and their needs must be met… Improvements in bringing more aid into Gaza cannot be used to prepare for or justify a full-blown military assault on Rafah.
Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator

Music includes remixes of “Baby Shark,” the Gummy Bear song, “Who Let the Dogs Out,” and the National Anthem. Students in the encampment are facing counter-protesters, silently holding signs calling for divestment and Palestinian liberation.
4/30/2024 – UCLA issues notices around the encampment
UCLA officials have erected signs around the encampment, stating that it is “unlawful” and “violates university policy.” The notice also reads that “students, staff and faculty who have joined the encampment should identify themselves” to officials or security, and warns that those who remain could face “sanctions,” which could entail dismissal.
4/30/2024 – 8:15pm: Situation at Tongva de-escalates
The situation at the Tongva Steps has de-escalated. The barricades surrounding the encampment remain as of now, and campus security is still present at the top of the steps. Counter-protesters are present on the other side of the quad and appear to play loud music accompanied by flashing lights amidst a large stage set-up.
4/30/2024 – 7:15pm: Individual with bear-spray reportedly leaving central campus [updated 7:33pm]

4/30/2024 – 6:30pm: Individual reported with bear-spray at Tongva Steps [updated 7:02pm]
A middle-aged male in a black jacket and a black ski mask has been pointed out by UCLA CSC staff to be carrying 8ml of bear-spray. The individual has made attempts to talk with the front lines and has been videoing people down the Tongva Steps. He additionally kicked in a sign between Royce and the Tongva Steps that read “Let Gaza live.” As of 7:02pm, he is at the entrance to Dickson Court between Powell Library and Kaplan Hall. Another individual wearing a grey hoodie and carrying pliers remains on top of the Tongva Steps.
4/30/2024 – 6:10pm: Dickson Court has been blocked off
Dickson Court is currently blocked to those without encampment wristbands. Organizers are currently working on a system to readmit new demonstrators. All entries are paused, but many are on standby outside. The encampment appears peaceful with campus security present at the perimeters.
4/30/2024 – 5:15pm: Chancellor Block’s office threatens demonstrators with suspension [updated 5:25pm]
UCLA officials have brought flyers to the encampment, ordering students and nonstudents alike to leave Royce Quad on the grounds that it is “unauthorized.” SJP organizers are currently announcing these risks to demonstrators at Dickson Court. Chancellor Block is threatening disciplinary action and “sanctions” against students and staff alike, and an email has been sent to UCLA students, informing them that barriers to the encampment have been removed.
No violence has been recorded by demonstrators within the encampment, only by counter-protestors and law enforcement. Administration is currently seeking to negotiate with student organizers.
4/30/2024 – 3:45pm: Chancellor Gene Block to testify in Congress
Virginia Foxx, a Republican representative from North Carolina & Chairwoman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, has called for UCLA Chancellor Gene Block to testify before her committee on May 23. Gene Block has become one of the targets of the demonstrators for Palestinian liberation, who criticize him for not using his position to divest from companies involved in Israel’s assault on Gaza. Counterprotestors have also attacked Block for not taking sufficient action to combat what they believe to be antisemitism on UCLA’s campus, which will be the focus of Foxx’s probe.
Foxx has additionally called upon the heads of Yale University and the University of Michigan as part of a probe into their alleged “dereliction of duty to [their] Jewish students.” Similar hearings contributed to the resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay earlier this year, as well as the organization of the encampment at Columbia University that sparked the national encampment movement in the past weeks. Simultaneously, House Speaker Mike Johnson has called for policy change that would further enable police entering university campuses in response to student demonstrations.
4/30/2024 – 1:23pm: Daily Programming – People’s Assembly
In this encampment, there is a focus on taking care of each other. This assembly provides an emphasis on the safety of individuals within the encampment, following community guidelines and protecting disabled/vulnerable communities. “We are here and we are grounded in the fact that people in Gaza are being carpet bombed everyday. We are doing this for them and we stay grounded for them!”
Camp workers express appreciation for facilities workers and grounds workers, who make it possible for the encampment to keep functioning.
A guided meditation and prayer is then conducted for grounding and for solidarity with Palestine.
This is then followed with an informational segment, which informs the community of developments around the world pertaining to the war in Gaza and the global movements for a ceasefire.
After this update, an encampment participant gives a speech reminding of why we are here. News updates regarding what is happening in Palestine and the deteriorating conditions motivate people and remind them of the purpose of the encampment: complete divestment – “we want to stop making a material contribution of the genocide. We are here to help in solidarity with Gaza”.
The assembly winds down with group discussions opening up, for campers to think about how they can contribute to the encampment and how the community can protect each other. People are encouraged to talk and discuss these issues so the encampment can go on longer and work towards the ultimate goal of achieving divestment.
We want to stop making a material contribution of the genocide. We are here to help in solidarity with Gaza.
Encampment Speaker
Israel’s War in Gaza:
4/30/2024 – 10:15am: Morning News Coverage
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his promise of a ground assault in the southern city of Rafah, where a million displaced Palestinians are currently sheltering. Netanyahu has referred to this assault as necessary for “total victory,” and that it will happen “with or without a deal.” Israeli military communications suggest that, if a ceasefire deal is not reached, the assault on Rafah will be approved “in the coming days.” A Hamas delegation is currently composing a written response to the 40-day ceasefire deal, in exchange for release of hostages. Spectators are warning that this ceasefire deal may be the last chance to stall an assault on Rafah, which aid groups and officials from various countries, including the UK, have warned would be disastrous.
The ICJ has rejected Nicaragua’s case that sought to bar Germany from supplying arms and aid to Israel under the 1948 Genocide Convention. Judge Salam stated that the court is “deeply concerned about the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” but did not order Germany to resume funding UNRWA. On Friday, Lebanon’s cabinet voted for the Foreign Affairs Ministry to accept the ICC’s jurisdiction to investigate war crimes within its borders.
Dr Paul Reavley, former British Army medic, observes that “the children [in Gaza] sort of underplay their pain… complaints about pain seem trivial” in comparison to the trauma experienced by all Palestinians. The death toll in Gaza has risen to at least 35,072 Palestinians, as well as 77,074 injured. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has stated that “incremental progress” has been made in delivering aid to Gaza, but “the lack of security for humanitarians and the people [they] serve” remains a “major obstacle.”
It is absolutely essential to have a massive supply of humanitarian aid now. This means opening more entry points, this means a concentration of efforts of all entities and without obstacles.
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Israel’s War in Gaza:
4/29/2024 – 7:30pm: Evening News Coverage
Israeli drone and airstrikes on Nuseirat refugee camp and Gaza City have killed 5, according to the Wafa news agency. UN agencies estimate 37.5 million tonnes of debris have accumulated in Palestine, much of which contains unexploded bombs.
The Israeli government has signaled belief that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is preparing to file war crimes charges against many government officials, potentially including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Such charges could reflect the use of starvation as a weapon of war by the Israeli government on the Palestinian people. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is also set to rule on charges that Germany’s supplying of Israel with arms violates the 1948 Genocide Convention.
US and UK officials have hailed a “generous” deal that would result in a sustained 40-day ceasefire and release of captives. A senior Hamas official told Al Jazeera, “stopping the attacks against Palestinians is not generous.” The deal is currently being reviewed by Hamas, which is reportedly composing a written response, while G7 countries have expressed fear that the ICC’s arrest warrants could jeopardize the 40-day ceasefire.
Since October 7, at least 34,979 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, in addition to 77,643 wounded, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Over 14,500 children have been killed, and over 8,000 are missing. 60% of residential buildings have been destroyed or damaged, in addition to 80% of commercial and 73% of school buildings.
The ICC could press charges imminently after an investigation launched in 2021 that covers events starting in 2014. The inquiry has also been looking at Israel’s construction of settlements in occupied territory. Additionally, such charges could reflect the use of starvation as a weapon of war by the Israeli government on the Palestinian people.
